If I recall my teachings from when I was young, the largest, most evolved “mutant” turtles were a result of ooze and proximity to large rodents who taught them survival skills.
Not specifically related to this video, but I want to say - I have been catching up on this channel over the last few weeks. This is definitely the best channel I have seen on this topic on RUclips (and I say that as a PhD student in the field who is very familiar with many of the topics and papers you cover). You are thorough and nuanced while keeping things interesting and coherent. You have always clearly read and understood the papers you cite and are willing to correct yourself on the admittedly rare occasions you make a mistake. Please keep up the good work!

It’s a pleasure to hear scholarly rigor propelling engaging, narrative logic with worthwhile, substantial content, all described with Linnaean terminology. On RUclips you never know what you’re getting from just glancing at the titles and cover illustrations; some “science” presentations are just amateur pop entertainment with lots of violent predation and a very low global veracity index. I do grin frequently over the British pronunciations. I will never again refer to proboscideans with such ungenerosity of syllables.

I had the privelege of seeing a sea turtle in the wild some years ago, while snorkelling in Fiji. They're such amazing, beautiful creatures, and the loss of each individual is a tragedy.
I got to see a bunch of them in Hawaii on a few occasions. The best one was while snorkeling. There were a whole bunch of them and the water was clear enough to see for a long ways. Not sure what the correct name for it is but it was like the sand suddenly dropped off into deeper water and all the sea turtles were sitting on the edge facing the deeper drop off. Some were also swimming around, I saw one of those first and was like holy shit we got to see a sea turtle, then I look out in the distance and they are everywhere! It was such a great experience.

I didn't know a turtles shell is actually part of the skeleton. The appendages (bones) connect directly to the shell. I thought a turtle skeleton was like a armadillo or something. Turtle skeletons are very interesting. After going to a fossil museum I also found out a snake has the most vertebrae and bones out of any living animal.

Beautiful presentation. Can you imagine seeing a 4 -5 meter long turtle today? I remember when I was younger, my dad had rescued a huge snapping turtle from off the highway and brought it home. I guess he wanted to show me and my brother. But Snapping Turtles are no joke! When my dad was releasing it back into the wild (away from the highways), the Snapping Turtle bit in half a 2 inch diameter branch my dad was using to guide it. This creature could easily sever a wrist or toes if it ever clamped on to you! But rather than be afraid, this only made me respect them and be in awe.
I am incredibly grateful to live in a time where this precious knowledge is so easily available. I feel like soon those beautiful animals will be extinct and if humans continue like that there won't even be the possibility to grieve the loss of them. I hope dearly this is just nihalistic thinking

I lived on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua (the Miskito Coast) during my teens... ...my knucklehead parents were "missionaries" - long story... Anyway, I used to watch as these amazing creatures were hauled on to the beaches, cast down on their backs, and left to die slow, agonizing deaths. The people who fished for them ate them. And they were poor beyond belief. But it was still a sad sight. I'll never forget it. I've been a little environmentalist ever since I drew my first breath, and the way we treat this planet is APPALLING. We'll pay for it. And the planet will be fine long after we're gone. We are a hiccup.
Very interesting. Turtles being archosaurs does seem plausible. They have some thick armour similar to both crocodillians and dinosaurs. Reptiles never cease to amaze me.
My money is still on turtles being anapsids; they're simply too ancient and unique to be part of something so common as diapsids, _and_ it would be really neat if we had a surviving anapsid lineage. Hell, if amphibians can survive to this day, then why not anapsids? I have faith in turtles.

I had the privelege of seeing a sea turtle in the wild some years ago, while snorkelling in Fiji. They're such amazing, beautiful creatures, and the loss of each individual is a tragedy.
I was just thinking: the turtle probably thought exactly the same about you.
I've only seen dead half-eaten ones unfortunately.
I got to see a bunch of them in Hawaii on a few occasions. The best one was while snorkeling. There were a whole bunch of them and the water was clear enough to see for a long ways. Not sure what the correct name for it is but it was like the sand suddenly dropped off into deeper water and all the sea turtles were sitting on the edge facing the deeper drop off. Some were also swimming around, I saw one of those first and was like holy shit we got to see a sea turtle, then I look out in the distance and they are everywhere! It was such a great experience.

I didn't know a turtles shell is actually part of the skeleton. The appendages (bones) connect directly to the shell. I thought a turtle skeleton was like a armadillo or something. Turtle skeletons are very interesting. After going to a fossil museum I also found out a snake has the most vertebrae and bones out of any living animal.

Beautiful presentation. Can you imagine seeing a 4 -5 meter long turtle today? I remember when I was younger, my dad had rescued a huge snapping turtle from off the highway and brought it home. I guess he wanted to show me and my brother. But Snapping Turtles are no joke! When my dad was releasing it back into the wild (away from the highways), the Snapping Turtle bit in half a 2 inch diameter branch my dad was using to guide it. This creature could easily sever a wrist or toes if it ever clamped on to you! But rather than be afraid, this only made me respect them and be in awe.

Anyway, I used to watch as these amazing creatures were hauled on to the beaches, cast down on their backs, and left to die slow, agonizing deaths.
The people who fished for them ate them. And they were poor beyond belief. But it was still a sad sight.
I'll never forget it. I've been a little environmentalist ever since I drew my first breath, and the way we treat this planet is APPALLING.

My money is still on turtles being anapsids; they're simply too ancient and unique to be part of something so common as diapsids, _and_ it would be really neat if we had a surviving anapsid lineage. Hell, if amphibians can survive to this day, then why not anapsids? I have faith in turtles.
