the scat singing is the same as the notes he's playing - it shows that he knows what he's playing, where he's going, he's choosing the notes and that it's not mindless shredding for the sake of it. Very impressive.
The energy, the passion, the musicianship! In the wave of prepared, minimalist pop of the modern radio, this video reminds me of the soul that music possesses. True musicians are a treasure to society.
Andreas definitely one of the top ten guitarists of all time..and he is still so young! He plays beyond constrained, constipated music..ala Wes, George Benson, Howard Roberts, Barney Kessell, Eddie Van Halen, Hendrix, Johnny smith, etc..not all jazz, but same attributes..oh..the Beetles.. I am learning so much by watching Andreas to apply in my soloing..big improvements in just a few days..need to find some unconstrained folks to play with.. Thank You Mr Oberg for being an accessible genius
I am by no means a pro musician or guitar player, but I know that the singing is not supposed to sound like Celine Dion. What Andreas is doing is supposed to demonstrate that he KNOWS what he's playing i.e. he's so thorough with it, he can sing it. And it goes further, he's so thorough with the guitar that he can play what he's thinking immediately, there's no time lapse, just like you don't need time to form words with your mouth or to phrase sentences. He knows the fretboard as you know your throat. His fingers move to play as effortlessly as you move your mouth to speak. The most famous example of such skill is perhaps George Benson. What they play is what they sing and vice versa, because it doesn't matter what instrument they are using (throat or guitar), what you are hearing is their music, their individual sound. It takes years of practice and dedication to develop this level of intuitive playing, these guys are unmatched.
That's it man! Singing for high technical and experienced player is sometimes a way for them not to fall back on muscle memories as well (licks and ideas that you would normally fall back to since your fingers so used to it).
Well, everyone has the right to their own taste and distate. In today's culture it seems taboo to state that you dont like things. However, I would prefer it if Glenn Gould and Keith Jarret kept their noises to themselves and I find scat very cringy. That doesnt mean they are not huge musicians or anything like that, its just a preference.
I got to play with Frank Vignola after a gig he played with his jazz quartet. It was at a music festival in Harbor Springs, MI. He was really good then and is still just as good now.
That feeling when you learn the stochelo version of bossa dorado after 5 hours and you are like "fak yeah i rock" and then you come to youtube and watch a video like this.... Back to the practice room it seems, looks like i'm never gonna leave my room.. Fak my life :/
If I may, it wasn't meant as a scatting solo. It's a technique that helps you solo better. He was doing it because when you're creating lines, singing what you're playing makes connecting your musical thoughts to your hand movements a lot easier.
I really love the juxtaposition of these two players' style. Both obviously fantastic Gypsy guitar players, but one is uber traditional and authentic in his approach and the other infuses some bluesy sounds in to his playing. Incredible!!!
For all of you complaining about the scatting, try improvising in a lyrical manner with and without scatting. If you can get your vocals in tune and time with your instrument of your choice, your melodies will be so much richer. Get used to it!
it's not just about speed, django was original, and a man ahead of his time in terms of expression and interpretation. the tone he managed to get from each note was just amazing.
Vignola somehow seems to get other guitarists to play standards that manage to become fresh and new. He reminds me of the 1950s early rock and roll guitarists that were somewhere in a transition between jazz and something beyond: Frank seems to have an insatiable appetite for creating refershingly novel and unfamiliar combinations of established styles and influences.
Everytime the guitarist with the grainy purple guitar starts playing leads, I can imagine Yngiwie Malmsteen peeping menacingly at him through the bottom of a window with those black sunglasses on
Vishi, I love scat, so for me, I'm in heaven, I love how musicians feel the music that they are playing and make it theirs but to each their own. No telling how many times I have heard this, I might be on my 5th play.
The best thing about scatting while playing the same notes is that it shows that you're not just shredding for the sake of it. It show that you know what you're playing
@odingr that's why you came up with the two major rules. I told the second one once to a friend, when talking about a song I just had figured out. It had some kind of very simple solo (was a 4 chord pop song, by the way), and when hearing it for the fourth time or so, I just went into the room singin' it note by note telling him "now I'll be able to play it" If you can't hear it, you can't play it. Thanks again stranger. Keep hearin!
Haha this is actually part of a video lesson series. He explains in another video how scatting helps him improvise bebop solos. Here he is demonstrating the technique.
I don't think you guys realize how incredibly difficult it is to do what that guy is doing. He's subconsciously thinking about what notes he wants to play, playing those notes and then singing them simultaneously. Technically, he's playing the same solo with two different instruments at the same time.
Looks like there having fun playing music and a bit off a jam, don't get too picky, you know what it's like when you jam, anything happens, they are pretty fast if you like that 👍🏻😆 wish I could play that good 👏🏻
Sounds really cool if you ues the B as bass-note on the first E7. I play it like this: Dm7 E9/B Gm6 A7 Sometimes Dm7 E9/B B7sus A7 And the b-part: D9 Gm6->7 and the G# diminshed A7
Some blues player sound lot better than some django copy by the way, pentatonic is a well used scale that is need is some situation, that player on the video does nothing except make my head turn ....like many players today, speed is like the only thing they feel, no dynamic, no chord changes, no originality
Coming back here every year to truly appreciate the musicality and true talent here.
This is NOT a guitar lesson. It's an ad for selling your soul to the devil at the crossroads.
Very nice!
More than a decade later, still speechless.
I loved the birididupdbapdbapdodapdobdirididbaidiabdapapapabaibrriabirairabriabriabirabrbriririririabribrribriairbairaaaririiiiii bit
the synchronization on this completely spontaneous improvisation is amazing, it is unbelievable that this is complete non rehearsed impro.

Except for that one night...

Scattering is the term for it :)
Andreas enjoyed the hell out of this one, he's an insanely fast player

it only took you 5 hours? That's pretty good!!

I sang the same lyrics walking barefoot across hot sand.

Andréas , where are you in 2017 ? ``freakin`` performance with the scat-singing the lines !!! Graet `synergy`` between you 2 guys !
I don't think you guys realize how incredibly difficult it is to do what that guy is doing. He's subconsciously thinking about what notes he wants to play, playing those notes and then singing them simultaneously. Technically, he's playing the same solo with two different instruments at the same time.

"A" part: Dm E7 Bb7-5 A7+5 Dm

Sounds really cool if you ues the B as bass-note on the first E7. I play it like this:
