  • Based on the real-life British Post Office scandal, Mr Bates and The Post Office set off a firestorm of public outrage forcing the British Prime Minister to act. Watch the miniseries starring Toby Jones starting Sunday, April 7, 9/8c on MASTERPIECE on PBS.
Following one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, Mr Bates vs The Post Office was created with direct input from the innocent - and indomitable - people caught up in it. When money started to seemingly disappear from its local branches, the government-owned Post Office wrongly blamed their own managers for its apparent loss. For more than 20-years hundreds were accused of theft and fraud, and many were even sent to prison - leaving lives, marriages, and reputations in ruins. But the issue was caused by errors in the Post Office’s own computer system - something it denied for years.

Also see the Robo-Debt Scandal in Australia. From 2013 to 2019, the Australian Governmento unlawfully sent letters claiming overpayments of Social Security, to 560,000 people - totalling $1.76 billion. The debt-notices falsely assumed that the recipients had under-stated their earned income, by assuming that their income this year was the same as their income in last year’s tax return - ignoring that they may have since lost their job. The scandal led to an Australian Royal Commission in 2022 and found that Prime Minister Scott Morrison and two other Ministers had failed to check whether the scheme was lawful - where falsely-calculated demand letters were automatically sent by the social security computers. (Kym in Darwin). The scandal meant refunds totalling $760 million to 360,000 people - after 30 suicides. No mini-series on it as yet.

And likely there never will be, sadly.

I am so pleased the US is going to see this miniseries. I’m listening to Nick Wallis’s book and it’s baffling that these events occurred.

It is not over and justice has not been served. Most of these people have seen no money. Some have died and were never able to clear their names. Even as we speak, the company who devised the program is still dragging its feet about compensating these people. And even the British government is not doing right by these poor people who had their lives destroyed. Shocking.

@@dal6984 I don't watch the news and other than PBS Masterpiece sending me a what's coming next I'd never heard about it. Needless to say, I just started watching it with my hubby and it was a bummer to know that information, it takes away from the show. I made sure not to tell my husband what I had read. People should be more considerate when posting comments, and mention Spoiler!

They haven't got compensation yet. The CEO and the board should all go to jail for a long time.

I'll bet a pound to a pinch of salt. All those responsible for this outrage. When they appear in court. That they all get just suspended sentences. If that!! No doubt when that happens. There will be a public outcry. I, for one. Certainly will.
