Hi all! I hope you liked the video. I have since listened to the studio recording again. While I can hear a similar vibrato it sounds to me like they drastically reduced it in post. It becomes much less distracting to me at that level.
Also I hope you consider joining my Discord even if you don't become a full Patron ! Lots of amazing, supportive people.
Great reaction Sam. It would be great if you could please react to Lisa Fischer How Can I Ease The Pain live. Here's the link ruclips.net/video/stqMMW6bX_U/видео.html
I love your react. By the way, can you react to

He's Scottish, his singing and talking are so different
His screaming sounds much more better than your screaming 😆. Greetings from Germany 🤗
Sam Johnson you’re amazing I barely scratched the surface of your tips and I never sing for anyone and do you know how many people I have Rick rolled now hahaha though someone who never heard me sing thinks I have the voice of an angel which is nice cos I think I’m crap LoL
He is VERY Scottish.
Duphiney1234 lads DEFINITELY from Glasgow. Love that accent
powowliofkd hes actually closer to Edinburgh. Really cool, funny lad
@@BeverleyRainford it's really closer to Glasgow, he claims Glasgow as well 👍
Danny _ yeah I’ve heard him say that too. His town is less than 20 miles from Edinburgh and about 35 from Glasgow though. Still super close though 😊
@@BeverleyRainford 🤗 👍
He says "a lot of jaw movement" and my mind goes straight to Ariana Grande
Exactly i was thinking that. I wonder what Sam's thoughts are on Ariana's jaw movmement?
I totally agree! But she has amazing control sooo I guess he’d argue that she does it to add to her sound.
And halsey!
Ro Sure saaaammmeee!!!!!
The jaw has different positions regarding the kind of sound you want to achieve. Some people here should get into the world of Estill voice training a little bit, and learn some more of voice science 😅
As soon as he started, I knew he was sick. I also noticed the lower key. I've heard other live recordings of this song, and they sound a whole lot different. He's just trying to get through this.
He sounds phenomenal
It seems as though the jaw thing is a regular thing, though. I can't stand it either, and I have try not to fixate on it.
hes a very funny scot and takes the mick out of himself and he was suuuuuuper fucking nervous here - watch him headline glasto 2019! sooooo good!!! this was his US debut so was clearly shitting himself!!!
So,you guys think that you are better than him???? If you think so,then why not release a song and let others judge you of how good you are.....LMFAO
@jetboss737 good grief an American offended by swearing. Don’t ever come to Britain if you’re offended by my mouth, there’s worse people here than me, 💫good-day sir, pip pip! I’m off to sweep a chimney’💫
Sam: He sounds like a turkey
Sam: His voice is gorgeous
You took the second quote out of context though.
Jonathan Charles no one cares
@@quirkeynetwork3722 Aaaaaaand that's how we have mad right wing governments in power. Good job, buddy.
Jonathan Charles no? he said both of those sings in the same sentence lol
@@yipeedypee7 The whole quote is "His voice is gorgeous and then he does this weird thing on it that sounds like a turkey to me." The two pieces of information can't really be separated, because the whole point of the sentence was 'his vocals would be good * IF * he didn't make them sound like a goddamn turkey'. Separating the information changes the meaning.
Everyone else: "That jaw thing is super distracting."
Me: **humming along not noticing a damn thing because I don't know shit and just like the song**
mareir I don’t get it, I don’t care if he’s faking a proper vibrato... I like it 🤷🏽♀️
Hahahahaha
Same. I'm looking at his jaw and thinking, "Yep, that's a jaw. He definitely has a jaw."
I literally laughed out loud at ur comment. Gold!! 🤣
*Wow that jaw can really sang!*
@@somehorse omg that cracked me up 😂😂😂
Seeing Sam practically have a stroke everytime Lewis does the turkey jaw is killing me. 🤣
Brandi Axell but... I like his jaw thing 🤷🏽♀️
GLC Nornes I do too!!!
I bet he is really worried about ur reaction??!!…
Okay when you said you hadn't met anyone who taught the jaw thing and then followed it up with you haven't met every single person yet was absolutely hilarious 😂😂
Sam probably thought of the 1000 people commenting: "you haven't met everyone" lol
This version is a lower key than the radio version. That may be why it doesn’t sound like he’s pushing into it as much.
The b flat is definitely out of his normal range. But producers always make people sing higher for some reason.
Wow I never thought to check, you're right. You're always right.....
It’s always a fun game I like to play with live performances: How many steps down from the recording is this performance
@@joshbrucks the reason is: emotion. it just sounds powerful and raw to sing on your personal edge. But it's like running a car on full throttle, you can't do that for two full sets (only if it's a Porsche xD). That's why a lot of singers take it down a bit for live shows.
@@TurboTrompetenTraining yeah it messes an artists up thats kind of why singers have alot of vocal problems
Watching his jaw flop seems to put you in physical pain 😅
I had a feeling the wobbly jaw might put you off
hes a lovely scottish laddie, we love our boy .hes just raw talent, im sure as he ages his voice will develop. he might have to change to preserve that lovely voice. hes actually a nice and really funny guy , and wont mind the critique at all
alison cassells He just got world famous, like, a year ago right? Lol
@@corgisrule21 well known in rest of UK around a year, been gigging in uk a lot this year. always sells out so fast. he does have a unique voice. he is very funny and self deprecating , i cant see him ever doing the "do you know who i am" unless its a joke. not sure if hes moved out of his parents home yet. was still living with them a while ago
@Lea-Anne absolutely great sense of humour , can do stand u if the singing doesn't work out lol
Not raw at all. He had hundreds of singing lessons. Not to say he isn't fantastic. But he's NOT raw.
Why did I read this in a scottish accent (?)
My cousin is his piano player 🤗 I’m so proud of him!
Tell him I think he's dope
Haha you got it!! 😊
And my auntie taught him in school and my brother was pals with him before lewis got really famous
Love him, send him my greetings from Argentina
Omg 💕 Aiden Halliday da creampuff of the band 💕
The thing he does with his jaw is like he’s trying to sing while shivering.
Its cold in Scotland....
Lewis Capaldi is from Scotland and he has a voice I could listen to him all day 🌟
That “turkey sound” you’re describing is my favorite part of the song. I love the way it sounds.
My singing has improved SO much watching these videos just by implementing techniques you mention in regards to the people you’re critiquing. I love these videos!
Another fun video would be the masked singers.
It would be an awesome video but he can't see them sing. He's discussing how the jaw is pulling and really distracting in this video. He wouldn't be able to see it in the Masked Singer. Love that show!!! I knew the entire time who the Fox was. ☺️
Blackwidow they do sing for a little while after they take the mask off... js.
Blackwidow I did not know... I was waffling between jamie Foxx and I cant remember now who the other I thought it was
he did a video reacting to jungkook - if you who was on masked singers
He reacted to the lion from season 1 of the masked singer
Just watched his music video and the jaw happens there too. Never would've noticed it before.
When he originally released this song, he sang it in a much higher key, and, while it sounded amazing - so emotionally raw and powerful - it ended up wrecking his throat to the point where he had to stop singing for a while to help it recover. And ever since then, he's only ever sung it live in this much lower key. I miss the old version, and I wish there was some way a voice tutor could teach him to sing in that higher key in a safe, comfortable way, but maybe there just isn't one.
He’s not a turkey, you’re a turkey. Kidding. 😁 He’s my literal favorite person right now. I also love your videos, and this made my day. I AM glad you didn’t mention his use of ‘frough’ instead of ‘through’. There was another person who analyzed it and got hung up on that. I think it adds character.
A fricative is a fricative 🤷♂️
It's ironic that she's British, too.
I don't think she was as hung up on it as you guys were hung up on her mentioning it.
There was a video a few days ago where Sam got hung up on a vowel pronunciation, people were slamming him for it. People are getting too sensitive.
Sad part is that BEING A TURKEY probably got him where he is now...
If he sounded like everyone else then maybe he would have not been there.
Fair point !
I mean.. as a singer myself, I'm with you bro..
Vibrato should be a natural tool, and not forced by any physical mechanics
Pablo Sniper not trying to disrespect u or anything but him forcing the vibrato and doing it well whether u like the sound or execution or not doesn't matter as people want to hear him sing not either of u. Don't want that to come across harsh but I find it strange when people criticise technique when them doing it the "correct" way doesn't even get them half the success or unique sound as the one they criticise
@@mattjames5800 Sam says all the time that everything he says is subjective and while not Technically "correct", it can still be a good, healthy sound.
Jessie B yes I know and I wasn't trying to be rude or offensive or anything but my point was that there really is no way to sing "correct". If everyone sang the same withe the same "correct" techniques then they'd all be boring and no one would listen to them. Like for example if Sam sings all the notes perfectly and has perfect technique I'd still listen to Lewis instead. I'd take unique singers who can make and technique (right or wrong) sound enjoyable and good over someone that keeps his jaw still while singing any day of the week. That's part of his sound that's why people like him. Don't know if I explained that good but again I mean no disrespect I'm just stating my opinion
I saw Lewis live at the summer sessions during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - he is absolutely astounding live and so so funny! ❤️
Extremely Funny❤😍
This is how many times Sam mentioned the jaw
I
V
I'm also from Scotland but up in the Highlands, whereas Lewis is from the Central belt and our accents are very different. That said, his speaking voice, or accent really, is barely detectable in his singing voice. I personally love his voice (and personality/humour!) I'm so glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.
Love your channel and analysis!
Couldn't agree more with you. We need more Scots on the radio. Hopefully Lewis is the harbinger.
This dude for real stopped the video everytime Lewis made his jaw jiggle to make the exact same point he did the last 10 times he said it
I know
I mean I think he sounds amazing even with the jaw vibrating, it’s a different technique, there isn’t a perfect correct way to sing. Him using that jaw vibrate technique make him sound in a different way than most artist who keep the sound the same vs. add a little sound just by vibrating lol. I think it’s totally fine with him singing that way.
I love the “jaw thing” 😂 even if it’s technically wrong.
So when do we get " voice teacher covers songs that said voice teacher reacted to" video?
Rocco Mauro yes!
"Stevie Wonder excluded" KILLED ME !!! Omg lolllllll
I honestly love the way he sounds! His vibrato is very unique and that’s part of why I enjoy him. If every famous singer took singing lessons they would all sound so similar. I believe in raw talent and Lewis is very raw. But I wouldn’t want him any different!
Dear Sam Johnson, you know what you are talking about and are no doubt an excellent voice coach. For the vast majority of budding singers. But here we are dealing with an exception to the rule, an idiosyncratic character/singer whose technical 'mistakes' are actually adding to the authenticity appeal of the 'ordinary guy' singing for ordinary people. Much of this at a subconscious level. As you say, audiences love it. And they love him.
Would you react to Harry Styles covering juice by Lizzo on bbc radio 1 live lounge?
Yesss! This would be great
Yeeeeees!!
Omg yes!!
I won't lie, I've no idea what the terms Sam is using mean but I still keep coming back to these videos
O thank god....I'm not the only person!!!!
Same
Lewis:
Sam: I can't, that's distracting
Fabulous singer with a fantastic Scottish accent 🏴👍🏻
im trying to imagine how you'd react watching Halsey if you're struggling this much with lewis lmao
the jaw thing and the sound it gives off in my opinion is what so special about his voice
Hi Sam! Would you mind making a video on any tips you have for retaining your voice while you're sick? I do a lot of musical theatre, but with the sudden tempature drop I've been feeling sick and it's really messing with my vocal consistency.
Straw excercises are very safe for your voice.
I’m a worship Pastor so singing is my job. What I’ve found, is that this time of year, the heat is on which dries us out bad! So staying hydrated (water intake) is crucial. Honey is also a humectant. Clique but true.
The “turkey” things seems very similar to what post Malone does in his singing. Posty mentions a lot of people loving it and a lot of people hating it
He’s a beautiful boy and his voice is gorgeous. Couldn’t complain at all
"..Just like a turkey" *shows picture of a turkey*
ah yes, i wonder what this "tur key" creature is. Thank you, editor.
I think the jaw thing wasn't intended but he has a thick accent and the way people from the UK talk depending on where he's from can really influence how they sing. It sounds like that's just how they talk and now that he's singing its emphasized.
"Maybe that's just me... but I doubt it..." I got a good laugh out of that one.
Lewis Capaldi has a super heavy Scottish accent!
That turkey sound you're referring to is what makes his voice unic and different from anyone else... It's one of his power points and an amazing sound and difficult for others to imitate.
Talking about jaws movements.... What do you think about Halsey jaw use?
That’s exactly what I thought when he mentioned the jaw thing. Hers is so distracting!!!
MF.Saguer 8 it feels like it hurts. In my opinion it’s irritating to watch. But she has a sweet voice.
@@andread9807 yes she does. she is amaizing no discussion. But my inquire is if she don't do it, will be a difference on her singing?.
MF.Saguer 8 I think so, considering it’s her technique. Like she CAN not use it, but I don’t think she knows how to.
Not to mention Ari!
OMG I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!! 🤗🤗 I love him!!
The little wobble in his voice is my favorite part about his voice
It’s his song and he’s very loved he’ll sing it how he wants he’s a national treasure
7:16 r u ok
I laughed harder than I should've
He’s unique. Period.
I joined your Patreon. I can't give much (I'm so far below the poverty level that being at poverty level would be like winning the lottery) but I really love your videos. You explain things succinctly, and you're never mean or rude. Maybe you're a super bitch irl, I have no idea, but in your videos you're always upbeat and you seem to have a really big heart.
Sell your phone
Great video! Please PLEASE react to George Ezra! Specifically some of his recent festival performances or live lounge performances (his performance of Barcelona on the BBC live lounge a couple of years ago is my favourite)
amber iqbal YES!!!
YES I love George!
I believe this version is taken down a few keys that's why he isnt pushing it as much
Dying over here with the use of "blase"
That jaw thing bothers me too lol
when doing this performance he was struggling with throat problems
Did he tell u that
Joe Smith he mentioned it himself
slags off one of the best vocals in the world right now whiles pausing every 2 mins, cracking upload haha
I used to like this song until it was played every other song on the radio for two weeks straight lol
Know what i like. When idiots who arent famous dont pause after every line to critique someone much better than them
Id love to hear your take on Billie Eilish performing All The Good Girls Go To Hell live on the Howard Stern Show. It would be awesome to hear your take on her technique and the style she approaches the song in. Absolutely love your videos, and its awesome to hear your take on different singers from pretty much a completely unbiased view point
He was poorly on the day. Love his accent, and it’s great to hear someone who writes their own material instead of the usual ‘ready made pop’ stars. I wish him all the luck in the world, he deserves it.
Hey definitely strong scottish accent but I think the jaw might be nerves/trying to control nerves. Good vid!
It might be nerves or just his stylistic choice. He has been known to get panic attacks. He had to end a show early once because he was having a panic attack on stage.
he has one of the most naturally beautiful voices, and he said he recorded this song in one take which is so amazing all things considered, but the wobble is SO much more noticeable live than the recording is, i’m glad you pointed it out (still love him though and of course you do too)
This is the best channel of vocal coach 💕💕💕 can you please do this with Perrie Edwards 🙏🏻
You’ve got every right not to like what you hear. I personnaly love the way he performs.
Billie Eilish “When the Party’s Over” Live on the Howard Stern Show
This is so incredible to you depict and dissect and totally awesome unique performance…. This is why we have the voice….💚💚
You can tell you are a vocal coach, am guessing you have students on Broadway. I am British and love that we have such a variety to our dialects, some sound beautiful when singing, scottish like Lewis and the Welsh are gorgeous to me.
I don’t know how your videos popped up on my feed but here I am and I am now obsessed.. subscribed and learning something new!
I'm Scottish I've seen him at nearly all his shows and I'm sit here like bitch we not gonna say anything negative on this perfect human being ok👋
Yesss!!
I love lewis' voice, emotion and you are my favourite vocal coach! I'm not a singer or someone who's learning but i find it all so interesting and you make it sound so cool, fascinating lol i have learned alot from your vids and find myself critiquing singers more and more correctly than before. Keep up the good work sam!
React to AURORA please
Oh yes! 👍 Seed please 🙏
Sam: I wish he would open up his eyes
Lewis singing: I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes
This poor lad was struggling with a cold and I also think he was jet-legged so he was not feeling his best throughout this performance and simply just trying to get it done. They even lowered the key to try and make it a bit easier for him to do without him having to strain as much.
He is the most Scottish of Scottish I have ever heard. I grew up in the town next to him and have a similar thick Scottish accent. I have seen him live before, and the jaw thing isn't normal, he did have to cancel shows after Ellen show, and he was sick. Man, he can sing like that live you should have heard him at Trnsmt in Glasgow. He was epic. I have seen people comment on his pronounciation, "chu" that links without and you, is a very Scottish thing and something I catch myself doing. I work in a fairly international department at work and have had several people not understand my accent sometimes.
If he can transition from chest voice to falsetto smoothly, there is no reason he couldn't do that with his vibrato. I think the jaw thing is a really bad habit and he doesn't need it.
I just started giving to your patreon, not much this month, but it'll be more next month. I love your videos and appreciate what you do so much.
I never really thought about his vibrato much till I watched this and now it's kinda like it's taking alot away from his performance.
Love your videos! Thanks for working so hard!
The “wobble” in his voice is a stylistic choice
yep
Can get annoying
yes he knows and said he doesn’t need it and would be better without it
@@ICrystalFoxYeah, but thats his opinion. Everyone had their own opinion. I personally like it, and so does Lewis.
Yes, I really like the "wobble," it adds some vulnerability--love it!
Your annoyance with the turkey jaw was honestly a whole mood 😂
Hey Sam! I love your videos and always appreciate your thoughts and opinions. I always learn a lot. I am just wondering, how do you change that jaw thing? When I sing and produce my vibrato, I feel like I do the same thing as Lewis and I didn’t realise you can use vibrato without having your chin/jaw move like that! I always hated that my jaw moves like that! But I am glad to know that there is a way to change it! I would really appreciate you getting back to me 😊
I LOVE your videos! They’re so informative and it’s awesome how you break things down and explain stuff.
Ariana grande does that too...but hey who is complaining 🤔
She doesn't do it to fake her vibrato though
Ygor Cortes but who cares if he’s faking vibrato or not?! 🤷🏽♀️I don’t get it
@@glcnornes3783 because it's worse for keeping control of your voice, making your technique much less consistent, and it sounds weird.
Ygor Cortes the first part of what you said may be true, but he’s been able to consistently pull it off (for now) in his songs... so perhaps he will learn later on. The second part of what you say is purely subjective, as there will be equal parts (give or take) of those that like that or not... I’m one of those that don’t think it sounds weird at all, I quite like the sound.
@@glcnornes3783 I'd be much more okay with it if it was a healthy technique, but unfortunately in reality it's a limiting workaround. Let's hope he learns how to do it the "right" way so that he has different options to play with 😄
Sam, I love your face!! I didn't know what else to comment, and I had to do my due diligence of helping out with the engagement in the comment section. Anyway, Merry Christmas!!! Wishing you much success and growth in 2020. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
me: his song is great
sam: his jaws weird
He's from Scotland, that's his accent! He's different from other singers & that will be his signature voice that listeners will remember and loved.
Oh hey! Look it’s my favorite voice teacher.
Look it's my favorite 7th chord embodied
I just love the way you and morely your face directly react to what you see and hear...it feels so real and honest!
...and that turkey comment did make my day 😃
"Maybe that's just me, but I doubt it." Yes, it is just you.
I love his turkey technique 😂❤
11:35 Some people are stage frightened / wants to feel where the sound resonates and I guess that closing your eyes can be a way to be improve both of those things. I'm guilty of doing that a lot.
Yes!!!! I wanted you to react to this exact video! Thanks!
pleeeassssee react to dermot kennedy he’s such a good irish singer
Watch the end of someone you lived music video. At the very end it shows a close up of his mouth that really illustrates the “wobble”
That jaw thing is most likely his heavy Scottish accent.
I don't think so, but I wonder if there is another explanation besides creating a fake vibrato.
Not gonna lie your criticizing arguably the best male vocalists in the last 20 years
He's Scottish and his talking accent sounds nothing like his singing 😂
I assumed the extreme vibrato was a choice to emulate the “searching” quality of Autotune. Like it’s just part of the evolution of singing, as influenced by the technology and trends of the times. Younger audiences might even be familiar with that sound more than traditional vibrato at this point. Love your analysis and kindness!
He's Scottish. Probably the MOST SCOTTISH you've ever heard. I'm Irish and that's good to know! But, there are too many different Irish accents to count! Which are you referring to?
I've been waiting for this 😩🙏🙏🙏
