Thanks for fighting for your dreams.
Fun fact: this is pretty much how "Into Sandy's Cities" began. I'd been meaning to make 1994-styled demakes of popular maps for the longest time, and MyHouse was going to be the first one I finished. However, I got stuck when designing the Bauhaus-building because I didn't know how to properly translate it to classic Doom. Eventually, I decided to just make an entire MegaWAD based on this concept, and that's how "Into Sandy's Cities" came to be.
Fun fact about this map: the original idea was for the map to automatically end if you die in the burning house, to signal that you got the bad ending. I ended up deciding against it simply because they'd have never allowed something like that in 1994. If I had released this map by itself, I'd have absolutely done that, though.
You also couldn't actually leave the house after entering it initially (since the doors to the outside required a blue key), but that made it so you couldn't actually witness the Soulsphere disappearing. All the other ideas, like the sinks filling up and the mirror world, were all planned from the start, however.
"Hey Sandy, you know what would be super funny?"
do you know who else
why can i imagine romero saying that?
@@atlascove1810 I can very easily
7:59 Nothing in DOOM is more horrifying than The Blockmap
I really like how the airport is replaced with a techbase (maybe even a *star*port specifically)!
It IS meant to be a starport, the hangar from E1M1 specifically! The idea is that Doomguy is forced to revisit visions from his past (including hell), since the house is implied to be HIS house.
@@GermanPeterso does that mean this map is just doomguy hallucinating from ptsd and whatever else in his house
@@xtremebrainrot Not hallucinations. The demons have begun to twist reality around itself, morphing his home into a nightmare. That's my interpretation, at least.
@@GermanPeter that actually sounds really dark for some reason even though its just a doom map but i guess its the idea of it being his actual house where he used to have his family and belongings and whatever and now its just reduced to whatever the demons are doing to it
GERMANPeter typing in MZHOUSE. I see what you did there!
Doom and other DOS games taught me about keyboard layouts.
That was completely unintentional too, I forgot they swapped the letters!
Playing this was so fun. Like i didn’t realise it at first so I was just walking around like “this seems awfully familiar…”
The house isn't driving me crazy anymore. It's the Running into Evil music that lasts as long as I'm in the level (min. 13 mins.) that's driving me crazy.
Well, I'm glad I made it to MAP22 just recently!
peter making his interpreting doom maps video when this is in doom ii: "alright so this is clearly a MyHouse.wad"
I like it. My only criticism is that the map uses the hidden shootable switches a bit too much. I think Sandy would have mixed it up a bit more to keep things fresh.
The eye switches are stand-ins for the trinkets you collect in the original map. I had to keep it consistent, otherwise it'd have been confusing which switches activate the secret doors, and which just open regular doors. If they're all eye switches, it's more obvious.
Yeah, shootable buttons weren't really very prominent in Doom. That's more of a Quake thing, really.
I never played MyHouse, and I don't watched a playthrough of it fully, but enough of it to know that I am not the right player for it. But I played your map yesterday and today (no, I didn't want to exit, there had to be a secret exit somewhere). And it is great. The different states of the same building feels a lot like time travel, and I immediately associated »Wormhole« from TNT. I decided not to use the map and to feel the intended confusion instead, but after 2 1/2 hours I gave up for that secret exit. On the wall, which I guess should reveal six eye-switches, I only got five and I was unable to find the sixth one. The whole WAD has a high replay value, and I will find it next time for sure.
But I found a minor bug instead. In one of the parallel buildings there is an optional room with a lowering crate for stepping on a tiny crate, revealing a pinkie. I ran into the pinkie's room, expecting a secret, only to learn that there is no way to lower the crate from inside. I believe it is in the first parallel building I encountered. Slade's application crasher… ehm… map editor tells me it is sector 237. Linedef 1516 has a correct SR lift action, but the wrong sector tag 2.
That bug has been fixed in the most recent version.
I like this much more than the original. It's more impressive having been done in the Vanilla engine.

This is amazing! You've managed to stay faithful to so much of the original, despite the technical challenges - using switches instead of the collectibles is a neat touch. Even the airport bathroom had its moment!
This is not only a recreation of myhouse.wad but also great example of "Doom 2 realism". Here we can actually see how it should be translated, thanks you :)
6:15 you know you can get through the brutalist house without shooting the dog!!!
I know, I just really hate dogs!
Honestly my only gripe with Into Sandy's Cities, and it's a very minor one, is that there are no Title Screen Demo replacements for the new levels
They have been added in the most recent patch.
3:24 nice
Also, the map has that 90's feeling to it, and it looks awesome!
13:47 either the title or the game is lying. Either way, cool map, gonna try it
Oh OOPS gonna fix that title LOL
GermanPeterson Presents: Another House
I like how "Sandy Petersen's map" just became a popular meme in damn 2024
I am still impressed that this was made on vanilla
What a way with confusion
I had such a stupid smile through the whole thing, the mirror looking more like a slipgate was awesome, my favorite map in the whole wad
Nice aspect ratio
sexy 320x200 35fps 🤤
7:58 blockmap bug?
Yup!
Found the same one… or my super shotgun wasn't that cooperative yesterday.
I've been obsessed with MyHouse.wad again recently so this is really awesome to see, really good demake!
WAIT UP! I'VE PLAYED IT (and sure Peter, i hate this level, you always feels lost and i already was about to go postal when i ended this damned map. Really, those mindbreaking maps made me feel ill.)
It would be really interesting to make doom eternal levels using sandy petersons design philosophys
this is what the real myhouse should have been
My theory: this map implies Sandy died in the same accident as Romero years before Doom 2 was ever created!
That's a neat theory! My interpretation is that the house is Doomguy's, who's *coming home* to see what happened to the place. Unfortunately, the demons have begun twisting it into a nightmare to mess with him, making him relive uncomfortable parts of his life (like the invasion on Mars, his trip through hell, etc). Ultimately, you stumble upon the corpse in the forest, and the implication is that it's YOU who already died years ago. Which would make sense, as that's what happens in E1M8.
But that's just my interpretation, and you can come up with your own stuff :)
VERY INTERESTING
I'll never get why people say the original map is the spookiest thing ever....
Thought it was literally your hosue at first not reading description and was a bit baffled by how American the house layout was
Nice job i like this better than the original
It's even more confusing now.
I've gotten so used to the Bethesda version that the red crosses on the medkits look wrong to me ;o;
That's good, in a way! The red crosses are more historically accurate (as in, that's what they looked like when the game launched), while the green crosses are more accurate to real-life medkits. So I'm glad people are getting used to the latter, too.
I just don't think they fit on Berserk :x
Aside from Chocolate Doom, can this also run on other sourceports like LZDoom and GZDoom? Because this looks really good, adapting MyHouse to something Sandy Petersen would make.
Yes, the WAD was made with vanilla-compatibility in mind, so it should run on pretty much every source port out there. I developed it using GZDoom, for instance.
Heck, it runs on the Nightdive port, so you can tell that it's pretty versatile.
@@GermanPeter OK, thanks for the clarification.
What the Dickens!
Is getting ambushed by a QWERTZ layout at 5:39 part of the WAD? :^)
YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT SHUT UP
This look soooo funnnn
Peter whats your opinion on brutal doom?
Feature creep and it doesn't really know what it wants to be. At least that was my impression of it the last time I played it, which was like... 3-4 years ago.
@@GermanPeterit's actually really good now, you should try it some time!
ey a vanilla myhouse would actually be neat and actually impressive, it would make me somewhat like myhouse, though i hate it cuz it's "omg le creepypasta and liminal!!!!" and newdeities going apeshit over gzdoom thinking it's the vanilla engine, though myhouse's use of silent teleporters is still neat, can replicate them with silent sectors
