Merry Xmas. I couldn't decide on 24- 70 f2.8 or 24-105 f4. Went with the f4 and don't regret it. Love that extra bit of reach and 150 when I crop mode. But that new tamron 35- 150 f2-2.8 looks intriguing.
@@daveinportland Definitely an amazing lens but for portraits and street photography IMO. For landscape no thank you! That beast is double the weight of the 24-105 G! 24-105 is a no brainer for landscape photography, coming from smaller sensor I always wonder how people can end up with a 24-70 while 24-105 is available. 70mm is way too short when you need to put emphasize on a subject
I am also a fan of the 24-105 f/4. I shot Canon DSLRs for about 20 years and that was my workhorse, I've been shooting Sony about 5 years now and the 24-105 was initially my workhorse. I shoot a lot more with primes these days, but, if I feel the need to reach for a zoom, it will be the 24-105 about 75% of the time. I know many who love their 24-70 f/2.8 and I am not trying to throw any shade on them or the lens. If it works for you, wonderful! For me, the extra reach of the 24-105 has always trumped the loss of 1 stop of light. But that's just me-your mileage may vary.
I did the same. the 24-105 f4 is a great lens and the only time I truly want more than 105mm, I want a LOT more. My other zoom lens is the 200-600 for wildlife or shots of the moon.
Usually it depend on situation, if you are more to long exposure, daytime and outdoor then 24-105 f4 is good choice but the lens suffer in low light thus not a good idea for night shoot or indoor. For 24-70 f2.8 is more versatile for day and night photographic or indoor with low light but most lens that are build with this focal length tend to be heavy and filter size tend to be around 82 diameter. Either way, it depend what's your ideas photo.
You won't be sad with the SIGMA 24-70 2.8. I use it on my A73 and it's amazing with consistently sharp, beautiful shots from that lens for half the price of the SONY which with its current version isn't really any better outside of a scientific test. Thanks for another year of great videos and content James!! Merry Christmas to you and your family
I thought the photo with the two hikers was pretty good. You keep consistently making these lovely compositions you're then dissatisfied with lol. Anyway, marry Christmas to you, Emily, and Noah!
Came back to rewatch this one since I'm off to buy a Sigma 24-70 on sale this morning. I had forgotten you started out with a sigma before upgrading to the Sony GMII. I was needing my confidence to be bolstered that I was making the right choice VS the Tamron 28-75. If nothing else I'll get a good upper body workout from the extra weight.
I also have the Sigma 24-70 DG DN for Sony, and it's my most used of a dozen fast Sony mount full frame zooms and prime lenses. I shoot landscapes as well as urban streetscapes and architectural, and this is my workhorse for those subjects. I find it is a touch sharper than my excellent 16-35 GM where they overlap between 24-35mm, and it's equally sharp up to 70mm. I like that it shares the same 82mm filter thread as the 16-35 GM. Good choice James. Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing!
I use the sigma 24-70 on my Lumix S5, in fact I only own 1 other lens for my S5, being a 85mm f1.8 (which I got for free due to a promotion for buying the s5, which Panasonic didn’t have stock for the lens they were meant to give me so instead offered me the 85 as a replacement, can’t complain 😂) Anyway I was gonna say I love the sigma. Something about the lens just pops, it’s got that 3D effect I think, being short and yet not clinical. Brilliant lens.
Danner's are great boots we used them a lot in the military. But yes they need to be broke in. So I would wear wool socks and break them in on short walks for a while. They will loosen up after a bit. They make some great products for military boots for cleaning and care. They will last you for ever and you can get them re-soled at a cobbler shop.
Best thing I did this year was to subscribe to your channel. Entertaining , very knowledgeable and sharing your settings are just 3 reasons I love watching. Merry Christmas to and sweet Emily and baby Noah.
People are going to think I’m nuts but my most used kit is the Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 and a Tamron 20mm f/2.8 with an A7riii. Very light, super affordable and surprisingly good. Not as good as your lenses but they definitely hit way above their weight and budget class. I have the classic trinity in A mount for my other body but haven’t touched them since I bought these 2 lenses.
Talking about A mount, man you can't believe how much I miss a99/a77 rear screens and also the very useful focus range limiter which worked even on any Minolta lenses!
@@networm64 I miss the screen rotation too and the multi function dial on the front left of the body and I miss how small and light the Sony 50 f/1.4 is. I don’t miss the weight, I don’t miss the stupid rules around the AF system. I have the A99ii and you can’t use the 399 on sensor AF points unless you have a Sony lens from Sony’s list of special lenses. The camera will face detect and lock on to a face but then not actually focus on it because I have a Minolta lens on and the face isn’t in the little AF area. So frustrating. Lots of little things they could fix with a firmware update if they wanted but they won’t.
@@jml7916 Exactly man, what an stupid move from a company leaving their loyal customers behind only cause they have left a mount and still dnt want to understand this is the worst way to push a user to upgrade and will cause rather more brand switch and I know it did in many cases where people was not ready for the mirrorless but needed better AF and performance in a DSLR body. And more silly is how they couldn't bring some few great features from their slt team to the new team and abondened it. Do agree about the correct place of the multi function dial. It is stupid to change a locked dial with your right hand while you have too grab the lens and if it's too small then good luck with that! And if you are supposed to do it with your left hand then why it is in the right side? IDK why Sony decided to keep the left side space of the top totally empty in most of the models. And the worst move was changing the tilting LCD to a crappy flippy screen in recent models.... WTH sony all dn't need to vlog with a +3k$ body and lens combo! You have the mighty ZV-1 for that! And honestly another thing I missed is the height of the cameras. Not the bulk and weight at all. But for reall, if they make the body height only 1 or 2cm taller it will feel way more secure in the hand with no need to use the vertical grip.
I used the 24-70 and 70-200 GM lenses for years. But, they were big and heavy. So, I went to the 24-105 and 70-200 f4 lenses. They were fine but slow. So, I went to the 16-35 GM, 50 GM, and 70-200 f4. The weakest focal length on the 16-35 GM is 35mm. So, I tried not to use that focal length on that lens. I still have the 16-35 GM and the 100-400 GM. But, I also have all of the Sony GM primes from 14mm to 135mm and those are the lenses I use most often these days. Happy holidays!
Panasonic's 20-60mm "kit" lens is a perfect solution for everyday landscape photography,I think. Much wider than 24mm but you can still zoom a lilttle bit. It is sharp, light, relatively cheap and absolutely great for landscapes!
Danner Boots are made just a few miles from my home. They’ll serve you well. Thanks for making our days a little more enjoyable & entertaining. Merry Christmas to you & yours.
Happy Christmas and New Year. It’s easy to forget that when you film yourself battling uphill to a camera shot all out of breath that you’ve made the climb once already to place the camera! I know how hard carrying kit anywhere uphill (Peak District) can be so bravo for doing it all twice just to get the footage.
Happy Christmas! Your videos have been a real inspiration as I’ve dug a bit deeper into photography this year. I ended up going with the 28-200 tamron lens which I am a big fan of. I love my primes but a versatile zoom lens is very often my go to.
Hey James, yes im mostly here because of your style of photography (wich is less of a hardcore science and more... hipfire (dont take this as a critique - i just have a very similar style :D ) ) but tangential topics are... nice to know. Especially because you often comment on them from the POV of a Photographer, and not say... in the case of boots... of a every weekend 3000masl mountain top climber hiking person... :-) Plus i like your humor :)
Regardless of the fact that is a photography channel, widening the knowledge base is super helpful. Danner boots are a gem. I have the Danner Acadia for a decade or so and I swear by it. Great quality product. Thanks for making these great videos.
Dude....I went up Great Gable on the 21st December. It was proper clagg but we came out above the clouds. It was INSANE...I will be uploading a vlog on it soon!. The 24-70 GM is my go too lens, it's a fantastic piece of kit.
Oh no, somebody is replying to my 2 year old video, what does he want?! You mentioned boots, leather boots. Get them. I've gone through very much everything you can think of, North Face, Merrell, Berghaus, Scarpa... Leather is the way, proper leather. None of that nubuck, suede etc. From all these brands, Lowa is the best. Lowa Mountain GTX. They'll cost you around a couple of hunded but they are amazing 👍
Same here, I don’t care to lug around my heavy 24-70 and have been trying other lens but I keep going back because of the flexibility and the Nikon 24-70 I have takes such great photos.
I just want a 24-150 f/2-4. The tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 is close but I would love wider and would gladly sacrifice slower aperture at the telephoto for a more reasonable size/design.
James, you have to be one of the funniest youtubers I have stumbled across. I love your channel and you are giving me HEAPS of inspiration to get out and shoot.
Absolutely beautiful landscape you're traversing there. I'm "stuck" in Denmark where almost everything is flat. It gives some limitations on the variation one can get in this genre.
Merry Christmas man, nice treat to see this pop up in my feed while lazing around. Love that lens, did that exact thing with exif data when I was buying and found Im always in the 50 to 70 range
Most current boots aren't made with repairs in mind. That said it's possible to fix some issues (at least temporarily) yourself with a flexible glue design for used on boots. A professional can obviously fix more, but not everything. I certainly am interested in hearing about non-photo gear too as I guess most people interested in landscape photography struggle with the same problems when it comes to finding the best hiking gear. It'll be interesting to hear what boots you went for.
A pity that conditions were not quite good at the time, that’s what happens sometimes. Hopefully you and your family have had a wonderful Christmas Day. Thanks for sharing again James Stay warm 🇦🇺
Don’t worry about the channel content James, we all know what you are like. By the way you forgot to mention Noah’s favourite brand of teething rings and Emily’ s way of making fruit cakes 😂 If you ever need a job on the side, have you ever considered cricket commentary? As I photograph wild life the 24-70 probably wouldn’t cut it ..I’ve put a bid in on eBay for the now defunct Hubble telescope..Damn! Shouldn’t have told you that. Keep ‘em coming James, your videos are always a must watch.
Yes, indeed. The 24-70 is out of my bag more than any other lens. I had a Sigma for a year, but ended up trading it in on the Sony. I shoot sports, and the Sigma zooms in a different direction than the Sony and it kept screwing me up and I’d lose the shot. The Sony focuses a tad faster than the Sigma. I really, really liked my Sigma, but I love my Sony. What a great, rugged, locale! Thanks for posting.
Merry Christmas. I’ve had leather boots all my life, and I’ll agree they can take some time to break in. But once they’re comfortable and waterproofed they last a long time
Hey James, hope you and your family had an amazing Christmas and i wishe you guys a happy new year. Love your videos and photos, you are such an inspiration. I've set a challenge to myself for the year of 2022, i decided to take photography and video a bit more seriously and step up from using my phone and learning how to use a camera. Let's see how it goes 😏. Keep up the amazing work brother and God bless
Merry Christmas, James. Always like the commentary even when not about photos. I did the very thing you were talking about when I wanted to get one lens to use most of the time: I looked at pics I took and found where they mostly lie in focal lengths. Very useful for me, it was. Thanks.
For landscapes, I can't live without the Sony 24-240. Extremely versatile and nice and sharp. I have the 24-70 also, but should probably consider selling it since I can't remember when it was on my camera last.
Have you considered the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 for Sony? Much newer and significantly lighter than the Sigma or Sony 24-70mm f2.8 but almost the same image quality. Great lightweight compromise especially if you have the 16-35mm f2.8 to cover you on the wide end
Merry Christmas James. I myself have four sigma lenses for my EOS R. I find them very good. I'm not nearly a good enough photographer to justify spending the money on Canon RF lenses for the EOS R or a future R5. Until I can justify it my sigma lenses will more than be adequate enough for my photographic journey through life. Hope your first Christmas with the wee one is amazing. You might want to take a photo or two... just sayin'.
Love the off-topic stuff! In fact, I'd be interested in a video on your walking kit, seeing as it makes up a massive amount of your videos 😁 keep up the good work 👍
I received your volume 3 book for Xmas, it is beautiful! My grandma even loved looking through it! Thanks again for putting out content! Hope you had a good Christmas!
The weather up that way is so hit or miss. I'm tempted to go there more often to try getting photos in the mountains (tricking myself into walking and improving my health ;) ) as it's "only" 3 hours away. I took a manual 50mm with my ancient Pentax K-X last week (visiting friends) and learned a lot in attempting to take any photos of merit 😂
Merry Christmas James and thank you for all the uploads. Good luck with the Danner's - I had a pair of their (not walking) boots about 30 years ago and they took an age to break in! All the best.
In my time using a 24-70, I have found that when I take pictures of places and things, I use 31mm almost like clockwork. When shooting people, between 51-66mm is the norm. I'm definitely less predictable with people than other subjects.
I have found that my preference is for longer focal lengths... like 135mm or more. But. Since I do bring my camera for any party or event I get invited to (or any time I leave the house really) I quickly had to add wider lenses to my collection as nobody live in a home large enough to shoot with a 135mm. Now I have a 35mm prime that is not really wide enough either but which I stubbornly use anyway. These days we're not supposed to get too close to other people so... it works.
I am in a bit of a quandary and hope to can help. I have the Sony 7 IV. I am caught between either the 24-70 or 24 - 105. I can go either way but welcome your review and possible recommendation.
Gear talk of all kinds is welcome! i'm surprised you don't a pack a puffy down jacket with you. they weigh next to nothing (mine is 350g) and can be compressed to fit in a pocket. i wouldn't hike in it, but it would be ideal when you're waiting for conditions to change
Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day. Do they do that in Wales. Noah's first Christmas, take lots of picture, he won't remember. Always appreciate your videos for a respite from routine. Rock on! 👍🥂
Great video James. Shame about the weather in this one but we all have those days. Winter weather can certainly be challenging this time of year. Sure your just trying to get us to buy a new lens. Not shot with the 24-70 but you are correct in saying about the focal lengths. Great piece of advice. Still wanting to shoot up North and get some shots of Snowdonia. Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas :)
Merry Christmas James, nice video always a, pleasure to watch. I have the sigma, 28-70mm and Sony 24-70 and much prefer the sigma as it isn't a huge ankor, speaking of which I changed to the tamron 70-180 2.8 for that exact reason Well worth a look to save your back. Look forward to seeing your next video
Cyanoacrylates like super glue aren't good for waterproofing because water is what is both the mode of bonding/curing as well as how they degrade. It's kind of funky.
Merry Christmas James to you and yours. Make sure you spoil the little man on his first crimbo...you'll never get theses times back....there worth a million photo's 🙏 💯📸
24 - 70, hmm. After retiring I bought a D3 and a variety of lenses one of which was a 24 - 70mm f2.8 (big, I mean BIG) still I lugged it around and of all the other lenses I had, like James, it was almost always on the D3. Needless to say I no-longer have the Nikon system, went mirrorless! First, a GX7 with stock lenses (14 - 42 and 45 - 150), now I have a G9 with yes a 12 - 35mm (24 - 70mm) f2.8, a 45mm f2.8 and a 25mm prime. Bet you can't guess what's on the front of the G9..? Got to agree with James 24 - 70 or equivalents are almost indispensable.

Very similar solution, 28-200 and the Samsung 18mm, chosen for weight / quality intersect. With multi shot panorama stitching the 28mm often suffices.
How rich are you 😭
@@96mrinav Not very. I spent all my money on lenses. :)
@@PhotoTrekr makes sense. With all these lens you can easily start a YT channel. Who knows it might fund your past and future lens collection 😍
I understand this so much. I also have the sigma 24-70 art lens and it has made its way to be my go to lens for both my studio work and landscape.
Plus i like your humor :)
Love the title, super clean. Dope video man!
Didn't expect you to be here haha
Oh no, somebody is replying to my 2 year old video, what does he want?!
You mentioned boots, leather boots. Get them. I've gone through very much everything you can think of, North Face, Merrell, Berghaus, Scarpa...
Leather is the way, proper leather. None of that nubuck, suede etc. From all these brands, Lowa is the best. Lowa Mountain GTX. They'll cost you around a couple of hunded but they are amazing 👍
Merry Christmas James, I use the 24 - 105 F4 as my go to lens with my A7 iii as I tend to shoot between 50 - 90 mm🎅🏻🎅🏻
Happy Christmas James and family. Received your latest book and it's superb as usual. Love the humorously descriptive stories. 🙂
I always enjoy hearing you waffling on about random things. Great tip on tallying up the focal lengths of my portfolio photos.
Merry Christmas James. Thanks for another great year full of adventure.
Merry Christmas James. Thanks for doing all the vids. My favourite photog channel
Highly recommend a collapsible walking stick for hiking with backpacks….your hips will in fact not lie about this
Absolutely beautiful landscape you're traversing there.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos and anticipate each new posting. May the blessings of Christmas be upon you and yours!
I have my 24-105 for that rather than an 24-70 F 2.8
I also have the Sigma 24-70 2.8. Absolutely love it. I get great results with it.
Happy new year to you and your loved ones.
Thanks for the lens tip to find the best bang for your buck
Just when I thought my Christmas couldn’t get any better! Merry Christmas James!!
A pity that conditions were not quite good at the time, that’s what happens sometimes.
Hopefully you and your family have had a wonderful Christmas Day.
Thanks for sharing again James
Stay warm 🇦🇺
Merry Christmas James to you and Emily and the baby! 🎅
Hi James, for me you can go off piste any time you like! Enjoying your book - Happy New Year!
Cricket commentary! LOL!
Pricey boots! If you want them to last, don't neglect to snow seal them. My wife and I love your off-topic comments.
Yes, fitness days are very familiar. An enjoyable watch as always, all the best.
Happy Christmas to you and the family! Look forward to following along in 2022 :)
Merry Xmas Popsys Family!
And thank you for the exif tips, I will actually do that. Was something new to think about! Thanks!
Merry Christmas and a photogenic New Year
Merry Christmas to you and the family...Keep doing what you do, it gives me a belly laugh every video you post.
Received your new book just before Chrissy, Loving it! Merry Christmas JP
Merry Christmas. I’ve had leather boots all my life, and I’ll agree they can take some time to break in. But once they’re comfortable and waterproofed they last a long time
Got this exact lens today for Christmas! Always love the posts, and I never mind the off-topic content, that's half the fun. Merry Christmas!
Why not choose the 28-75 G2 from Tamron, especially when 24-28 is covered by 16-35?
Happy Christmas to you and your family!
I wear Danners for work, and I'll just say you've made a good choice, love my boots.
We love all your videos! Merry Christmas!
Gloves in snow, James! Happy holidays to you and the family.-Elaine
Thank you and merry Christmas. 👍📷😎
I love that the forecast said the peaks will rise above the clouds and not that the clouds will descend below the peaks. Weather
Danner's you are going to love them!!!
This guy knows how to make me listen to him for 12 mins rambling!😂😂
You need to share your tip with Emily ;)
Merry Christmas James and thank you for all the uploads. Good luck with the Danner's - I had a pair of their (not walking) boots about 30 years ago and they took an age to break in! All the best.
Merry Christmas James to you and your family.
Rock on! 👍🥂
Merry Christmas to you and your family too my good friend. 🎅
I had a pair of Danners years ago and after the, yes very lengthy, break-in period they were great. Lasted for years.
You and I both James… 24-70 does just do it … very often
Great video James. Shame about the weather in this one but we all have those days. Winter weather can certainly be challenging this time of year. Sure your just trying to get us to buy a new lens. Not shot with the 24-70 but you are correct in saying about the focal lengths. Great piece of advice. Still wanting to shoot up North and get some shots of Snowdonia. Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas :)
Merry Christmas James. I opened my presents today to find my wife had bought me your book. 🥳
That photo at 6.30 is gorgeous 😍
Merry Christmas James, nice video always a, pleasure to watch.
I have the sigma, 28-70mm and Sony 24-70 and much prefer the sigma as it isn't a huge ankor, speaking of which I changed to the tamron 70-180 2.8 for that exact reason Well worth a look to save your back.
Look forward to seeing your next video
why not 24-105? Don't need the 2.8 for what you do. Get the longer reach and get the OSS. No brainer imo.
Happy Christmas to you and yours! ✌🏾
