Lead fumes are dangerous if it is brought to a temperature where it vapourizes, they should be well below that, but the other toxic stuff and handling, no bueno.
4:23 - That is HORRIFYING. Theres lead oxide dust going all over the place. These battery videos always make me cringe, but that... and handling the paste with no gloves, yeah, they wont be alive in 5 years.
You have got to admire their ingenuity and dedication to their craft it seems haphazard and a toxic environment to be subjected to however they choose to ignore the potential consequences for sustainability and future developmental outcomes it’s a hostile society for the majority of underprivileged people but out of the ashes they dare to take on the challenges that are facing their communities and take whatever opportunities that are necessary to survive and thus thrive by their creativity process and work together ethic they have radically altered their lives in their communities
The only "sustainability" they are doing is "sustaining" the 30-40 death rate , they are working for a family that they will never be able to see grow up. operations like this need some sort of basic fume and hazardous material control, and pretending like they are heroes is doing them no good .
A very good question. In the first instance, the CCA is likely to be comparable to an OEM unit, but deteriorate rapidly due to poor adhesion of the lead peroxide to the frame grid at the positive electrode. Pasting of the lead peroxide to the frame grid seen in the film is very poor, as are the purity of the materials used and totage after pasting operation is complete: leading to fissure lines before the plate groups are inserted into the battery (as seen in the film). This is compounded by lead sulphate ‘jacking’ during high cranking currents. All of which lead to shedding of active material and ultimately loss of CCA. More serious is the very high standby loss of the battery, again due to the purity of the materials used and salt contamination of the plates and groups again caused by poor totage. One of these fully charged is likely to have lost more then half charge capacity after a week of storage. This almost certainly is why these batteries are more often then not supplied dry charged.
the guy casting plates at the beginning is coughing because of repeated exposure to lead fumes. their work is dangerous and they deserve better conditions. that yellow "sand" that is turned into orange paste is orange and yellow lead oxide, the most dangerous forms of lead. I will keep these Pakistani Artisans in my Prayers of safety.

It's lead oxide! They burn old lead with nitric acid! It's extremely dangerous for life! The purpose is to run the chemical reaction in the battery! It's the main actor... The lead grid of the beginning it's only a conductive support!
