- I recessed the magnets on my spanner/wrench holder as the magnets are quite brittle. This stops the tools hitting the powerful magnets directly and possibly causing them to break (like I accidentally managed to do whilst screwing one of them back in.....).

Another quick and dirty way is to hang an old steel rake in your shop and hang box end wrenches in sets of similar size on each tine. Then, it's just a grab away to one of the right size for the job. I really do like using this magnet approach, though. Good video!

@@jamdiversified9698 I did it for a bunch of old wrenches that I might need on an occasional basis. Mostly because they're the larger ones that take up a lot of space in tool boxes and chests. By graduating them in similar sizes on the rake, I can just grab and go, knowing that one will likely fit. How often do you really find that you need that 1-1/8" box end when you're working on a lawnmower anyway? The length of the tines allows for more compact storage holding three or four wrenches each and it's up and out of the way, hanging from a rafter in the man cave. It's an idea I got from a friend of mine who did it in his garage/machine shop. Plus, it was a trashpile find that I was originally going to put a new handle on and use as another rake, so it just worked out better to be repurposed. I just found a good spot and used a heavy nail to hold the weight of the wrenches. The upward curvature of the tines keeps them happy and secure and free from the effects of gravity!
Wondering if painting this with a rubberized paint, like plastidip will offer a little slip resistance. Looks great.

Interesting, I haven't noticed them become magnetised. I think you'd have to rub the spanner along it in one direction a few times for it to magnetise it. Probably be good if it works though haha

Alternatively why not use electro magnets, each controlled via it's own micro switch, you operate the switch and theu fall like apples into your palm?

Why recess them please? BTW, loved the drama noise when the mag cracked!! LOL!
Kevin Chamberlain haha, the cracking is partly why i recessed them. They are quite brittle so didn’t want to risk breaking them when a spanner hits them. Also, it reduces the noise when you put them back which I prefer.
I guess it’s ironic that I cracked one whilst modifying it so they wouldn’t crack.....

yes the magnets are quite powerful so the spanners hit it a bit hard, this is why I recessed them into the wood. But fabric would be nice over the top!

This system is not very effective. you have the keys always full of micro particles of iron, it is very difficult to clean them. if they are set for beauty, that's fine, but not for working on it

JAMdiversified I believe that they magnetize. the screwdrivers are well magnetised. but the keys are a mess to clean them up. I've been a mechanic for 35 years. and I came across keys magnetized by mistake. it is all about it.
