      I’m still learning, but I gotta say, compared to last year? Blender is so much less daunting now that I’ve been using it whenever I have time. I’ve gone from looking up keyboard shortcuts to modelling on the fly. Still got a long way to go, but you can learn it too, once you get past a certain stage everything becomes easier

    • @SimFiftyFifty

      @@joshdiditt The real question is how much time you are spending on the software. I personnally started 8 months ago with an average 20-25 hours of practice per week and i was not particularly impressed by this tutorial, it is just good use of basic tools.

    “Topology… vertices… modifiers… meshes… nodes…. and renders”, if this tutorial was made a year earlier I would have punched my iPad straight off my bed but I finally reached a point where I understood every bit of it and could probably recreate this (with the help of the pause button). I would’ve never dreamed of doing this, I’m glad you guys are helping with this journey. It’s actually fun to learn and do but I definitely need a beefer machine.

      I think its good for the blender community to be getting tutorials like this since it has historically been the realm of amateurs. It may not seem like it but this is kind of the basics. But once you know the basics the world is open to you, the only limit is your creativity. All advanced techniques are usually just creative ways to use the basics together in new and interesting ways

    This is nice tutorial, but the most amazing thing is the make-up artists and prop makers behind The Mask. You can see that he is using a different dental structure and a very responsive silicon mask, that took 2h to get ready to shoot, and gave the possibility to enhance the catoonish look, specialy teeth! I doesn't metter how good the Post/VFX team is if the other areas fail to deliver an amazing job. Props to Jim, for the stellar performance on what he was best known for, weird expressions with his face. I think The Mask is truly a such underrated film, but the job done was just insane considering this is a 1994 movie.

    • @Ben-rz9cf
      @Ben-rz9cf 2 года назад

      It is all stuff you can learn online for free but there is a reason people pay tens of thousands of dollars for a 4 year degree in it, there is a lot to digest. In college we basically had 2 years of just intro courses since each section of a 3d software deserves it's own course of study

    • @jones1351
      @jones1351 2 года назад

      @@Ben-rz9cf I absolutely agree. I would love to attend courses and personally interact with instructors, etc. But I have to eat. Biology is funny that way.
      So, I must piece together my knowledge with tutorials and such. But, one needs the the software with which to practice. My '$3600' was in reference to that. Blender provides a broke bloke like me with the software for free. I'm grateful to them for that.

    Holy crap.
    I went to school for animation, learning on Lightwave 3d. Yes I'm old, yes I know the program is still around. Yes I know its not NEARLY as powerful or intuitive as this. I was wracking my brain as he was explaining all this to try to think "How would i do this in Lightwave??" and yeah... It would be much easier to learn Blender from scratch than for me to figure how to do all this in Lightwave. LOL

    • @dannymorales787
      @dannymorales787 2 года назад

      Depends on what you want to master. Choose wisely and master it. You could aim to be a generalist and learn how to rig, model, light, animate etc but you will never become an expert at one thing given that its impossible when aiming to become a "jack of all trades." I use Maya given that it's straight forward as I don't need a colorful layout and I support the devs so dropping money to something beneficial isn't a big deal. Blender looks good, but a lot of people rely on plug-ins which yes will get you a faster workflow but NO it won't teach you the principles of things. Blender is great cause its always updating, but with those updates comes a buggy software.
      In the end its not the program you use that will teach you or get you hired somewhere, its the tools you use and how you used it.

    Thanks a lot for the tutorial guys!
    Quick Question, do you record the process of these VFX Shots as you guys are working on them and then edit the breakdown together with the voice over or do you just re-create the whole shot as you're creating the tutorial?

    • @joeyvfx_official
      @joeyvfx_official 2 года назад +3

      I recorded my screen as I worked, then edited it all down later. Sometimes while doing some specific action, I'll undo & redo it to make it clearer for the viewer.
      After the shot is finished, I'll write down the steps for the tutorial & send em over to Ryan. He'll record his reading of the script, then it goes back to me to edit the tutorial. Usually I have to go back to the project files to record some missing bits if I don't have anything that suits part of the narration well enough.
