2024 and the first I heard of this. Of all the hockey stories ive heard over decades and a bunch about Semenko, I never heard about this fight until now. Must have been a dream come true for him.
I just read an article about Laraque trying for an exhibition match with Tyson and now here i am. Wow I never knew this happened although I was born in edmonton in 1984...
Can’t believe this really took place, Dave (R.I.P.) wouldn’t have lasted around if they had ever fought in earnest, still a great exhibition, I guess, hope it raised some money for a good cause. R.I.P., Mohammed
Ali has always been my hero. My dad was a boxing fan and when I was little my dad taught me ‘who floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee?’ And I used to reply ‘Hama Dali’ those were my first words. His name! When I was a teenager in the 1980’s I used to buy Ali’s fights on video and my dad and I would sit down and watch him for hours. He will always be the Greatest. 💥🥊
Little known fact: Comedian Freddy Lewis was in attendance for this match. He was thrown out for repeatedly screaming, “Ali is past his prime!” xoxo The Clarences
I know almost all there is to know about Muhammad Ali and I had no knowledge of this "fight" whatsoever. Muhammad moved great! I love the time the ref couldn't get out of his way because he was moving so fast. That other guy apparently had a tough guy reputation in the NFL and was pretty serious. I don't think Muhammad tried at all. He just played with him. Ali was so funny I actually laughed out loud a few times while watching. This makes my day!!
Damn I didn’t know Ali could still move this well by ‘83. I can see him doing the occasional proper professional fight through the ‘90s if not for the Parkinson’s disease
He was only 41. That's a stupid thing to say. Why would a 50-55 year old be doing ''professional fights'', and what exactly would that amount to? Actually fighting top 100 heavyweights in the 90s?
@@incumbentvinyl9291 I mean because of the Parkinson's, not age. And he was only 6 years older than Foreman and had that much market value. He would've known the kinds of numbers that an occasional special attraction fight would've drawn

Mohammed Ali and the legend. Dave Semenko loved by Oilers fans, hated by the rest of hockey fans. We loved him in Edmonton. Truly miss the ass kicking he would dish out on his opponents.
I noticed this as well. I realized watching his match with Berbick when he broke out some of his old moves in like the 7th or 8th round of all things that it wasn't that Ali couldn't do it at all, it was just that it took a fucking ton of energy from him after a certain point. Since this exhibition was only 3 rounds, he didn't have to worry about getting gassed.
Hockey enforcers have to be fearless, being willing to fight boxers at their own sport! I mean Semenko had a lot to lose, with his high profile role, protecting Wayne Gretzky!!! I never knew Dave was so ripped, either!! You could say Bob Probert beat a man who fought Ali!!!!
Couple of things - Semenko moves *very well* and handles himself like he definitely has some previous ring experience. Second thing was Semenko's physique was impressive, more muscular than I would have expected for the time.
@@anthonycobrakai no in berbick fightt ali was slow from the start.... i think medication was involved in 1981 in berbick fight... same has when he lost to Larry Holmes in 1980 his tyroid medication made him slow to.. but never has slow has berbick in 1981 i find him pretty quick here for 2 years after berbick fight
There was nothing wrong with what he was doing here really. The concern was taking blows to the head. Exhibition matches like this would either result in zero if not very few little bops. Of course at that point any hit is a bad hit, but when you're talking about Ali, we should be thankful he didn't actually pick a real fight. And it was only a few rounds.
ALI JUST COULDN'T SEEM TO QUIT! LOL! HE LOVED THAT LIMELIGHT! HE WAS SMART THOUGH! HE DODGED FOREMAN IN A REMATCH! HE KNEW BETTER AS GEORGE WAS NOT GOING TO FALL FOR THE "ROPE A DOPE" AGAIN! LOL!
Foreman didn't fight for 15 months after he lost to Ali. He started fighting again in 76 and would have been Ali's opponent in the fall of 1977 if he hadn't lost to Jimmy Young, seen Jesus, and retired to become minister. Ali fought Ernie Shavers instead. Shavers punched even harder than Foreman - as impossible as that is to believe- and nobody wanted to fight him back then. But Ali did when he didn't have to. To imply that Ali ducked anyone shows your total ignorance. You should be ashamed of yourself. I'm ashamed for you and I don't even know you.

@k.m It was held at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton.

I chauffeured comedian Freddy Lewis to this match. He called me (collect from a payphone) 3 days later from Flin Flon, Manitoba for a ride home.

NFL Hahahha he was Wayne Gretzkys bodyguard in the NHL with the Oilers and won cups. Takes 2 minutes to look that up.
Semenko actually moves pretty good in the ring
