A lot of people know about RE2 on N64, but few people talk about Starcraft 64 - something I think is even more impressive. Not only did they fit an entire PC game on an N64 cart, they included the full Brood Wars expansion (basically a 2nd full game) on the same cart! And if that's not enough, they somehow added split screen multilayer (for an RTS game on console!) and FMV cutscenes too! Not even the PS1 got a Starcraft port. It's just insane how they made that game work.
Except it had a lot more unacceptable compromises than RE2 did on the N64. At least with RE2, the game's true game data is literally between 500-700MB. The only reason why RE2 had two discs on the PS1 was due to Capcom devs making some miscalculations on their part with the game's coding, audio data, and leftover files, hence why they need it to duplicate most of the game on another disc at the last minute, hurting their budget when it came to creating and shipping copies of the game at release. Ports after the PS1 version all had only one disc/cartridge as the devs who ported the game managed to fix the bloated problem that the original devs had.
@EpsilonChurchRVB I completely disagree about the "unacceptable compromises" part. They were cramming way more actual game into that 256Mb cart than RE2 did, and it all managed to get 2 whole PC games on there... and not just barely playable, they played very well. The fact they somehow managed to make splitscreen multiplayer work is an actual miracle. Think about how crazy that is for the N64 to handle that. And yes, I agree with you about RE2 being a great port, but they mainly had to fix the coding, reconfigure textures & go with much more compressed audio (obviously they couldn't go CD quality, as that takes up a ton of storage itself). It's an excellent job, but I'm still more fascinated Starcraft & Brood Wars got a home console port, and on N64 of all things.
@@RGT85 Impressive, definitely. Impossible is being a bit dramatic. Also the PS1 FMV was absolutely compressed. Uncompressed video is huge and the PS1''s disc read speed and capacity is too limited for this to be practical. The PS1 contains a component called the MDEC which stands for Motion Decoder. It handles fast decompression of image data which is how the FMVs work. The vast majority of the data on the disc is video and audio which can be both compressed and down sampled to save space. It was very common in the late 90s to find PS1 "rip" games for download that cut out all the FMV and streamed audio so that it could be a much smaller file and more comparable to cartridge sizes. It demonstrates where most of the disc capacity budget goes. DreamCast's piracy scene had the issue of GD-ROMs storing more data than a CD-R could fit and would use the technique of cutting certain data out or down sampling it to save enough space to fit. RE2 on N64 is impressive because they did the work to make it fit and decided it was commercially viable to produce it using the largest cartridge rom size they could. Certainly unexpected and unusual.
I worked at BLOCKBUSTER when this game came out, and we used to run it in the Pokemon Snap station, just to see the visuals and we were blown away. I was shocked when I saw the FMV show up. I honestly thought it would be all still photos.
The N64 did some amazing things. The Star Wars games were awesome, and Zelda was mind blowing. Just shows that when developers (true developers who take limitations as their challenge) knuckle down and put their souls into it, they can accomplish anything! And the N64 was just awesome.
N64 version also had the report about Billy Cohen from RE0. Another fun thing about N64 space saving was when multiple characters had duplicate lines they used a single voice file, its most noticeable when Ada/Claire say "you mean he injected the virus into his own body"
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but before Angel Studios was a game developer company, they originally did the special effects and CG animations for the sci-fi horror/thriller movie “The Lawnmower Man” (the same movie that introduced the concept of VR to the mainstream masses).
This was my first game on the N64. Bought it off eBay for about $5 back in 2005-ish. After getting offered the console as a trade for my newly acquired and used GBA. Totally worth it. Still have them to this day!!
If I remember, yes, a content was cut from the original: when clearing scenario B, the ending theme was a guitar riff but in the n64 wasn't. I didn't mind that because it amazed me how a 2 disc game was in a cartridge, it's simply a miracle. Thank you guys from Angel Studios.
I had severe arachnophobia back then. that sewer spider scene got me everytime. especially when it would crawl on the screen. my younger brothers who were 8 and 9 at the time, did not like me to play this game in the dark at night.
And on the Dreamcast and Sega Saturn. Such a great game that was released on all the major systems at the time, and each one uniquely different from one another graphic-wise.
RE2 is indeed on Gamecube, but the stuff he mentioned in the video with changing blood colors, unique alternate costumes and a randomizer is N64 exclusive features.
This is my favorite port! The extra EX files, blood color changes and item randomizer set it apart from other ports. The secret room with the hidden (dead) Hunter was not in the other ports.
Dude RE2 was my childhood game. I got the game for Xmas wanted it and not expecting to get it. I played countless hours of it and even went on some crazy no save speedruns to unlock mercenaries and tofu runs.
In 2001 I was in a EB Games and had both the N64 version and the Sega Dreamcast version in my hands. I went in wanting the N64 version, but the employee told me that if I had both systems that I should totally get it for the Dreamcast hands down. Obviously the Sega Dreamcast port is the superior version, but to this day I still wish I had bought that N64 version!
That was my first taste of Resident Evil. I didn’t have a PS1, but had a N64. So I was at Target one day and saw RE 2 for sale. I played so many times and found the Easter Eggs.
This is one game that I've bought on every platform (except Tiger) its been released on, including remakes and this is probably my second favourite version of the game behind the Dreamcast port. Back when developers made an effort and had real hardware limitations to contend with. An absolute miracle port and just a shame we never got that Resident Evil 0 N64 game
Ni tendo’s entire corporation from day one was always behind everyones technology and they will never change that fact. Super NES had one of the slowest processor speeds and it showed
Thanks for the great vid! Resident Evil 2 is one of my favorite games in the franchise, so I definitely appreciated this video, RGT! I hope you’ll do more like this one!
Still have my N64 copy of RE2. Aside from the compressed, grainy CG cut scenes, it still holds up as a decent port for the two campaigns on an N64 cartridge.
Was just looking into this game yesterday because I’m getting an everdrive64 for Christmas and sure enough, everyone’s favorite Nintendo RUclipsr makes a video on it the next day.
This version was actually my first time ever playing the series. I was a N64 kid so I didn’t get a PlayStation until much later. Even when I did I played the PS1 version and I didn’t like it as much as the N64 version. It is what introduced me to one of my top 5 favorite series now. Such a fantastic game. I can’t help but wonder why Capcom hasn’t put it and Megaman 64 on Switch Online.
That Game should be in the world's Guinness records. Just Amazing to put a video on the cartridge. The game looked really good too on that console. Thank you Expansion pack. 😢 someone get me a time machine.
I recently just became a fan of Resident Evil I played RE4 for the first time in October, I loved that Game once I started up the Game I couldn't put it down, now I want to play the older titles starting with Resident Evil Remake on GameCube and Resident Evil 2 also on GameCube.
There is some cut content, there is only one FMV that plays during the sewers for the flashback of the Birkin shootout. Yes the FMV occurs on both the Leon and Claire scenarios, but the same Claire-FMV is used because when you watch the FMV from Leon's scenario you can hear Claire talk to Annette :)
By the time I bought it it was the most expensive game I have ever bought with 190 german marks (back then N64 games ranged from 99DM for 1st party titles, up to 140DM for 3rd party games). It was not my 1st time playing RE2 though, I played the PS1 version my brother had a lot already, but I was amazed how good it looked and that it even had FMVs, I was expecting it to be like C&C 64. I always wished they would have ported more PS1 games like that, especially RE1 and 3.
I completely agree. This is also my favorite version of RE2. I love the PlayStation but was mainly a 64 kid. I’m just fascinated with all the “impossible ports” made to the 64. Mega Man 64 and StarCraft 64 also come to mind. Thank you as always for your content.
This was my first ever survival horror game, and that's largely because I suffered from a horrible zombie phobia when I was a kid. When I saw this for rent at my local Blockbuster, I was naturally intrigued as to how it would play, and in doing so it helped me face and finally conquer my zombie phobia.
And you know what the crazy thing is? One of the devs said they could've done an even better job with the compression if they'd had more development time, but they had to make their launch date.
You dropped this just as i was in the middle of an RE kick lol. Been with the series since around 1996 or so. Basically the start. RE2 had just gotten its first demo on PS1.

Ok, so I'm fairly sure that I also heard the N64 cartridges were 64MB. However, at 1:50, if you read the text, it says "Resident Evil 2 will receive major N64 bang from it's massive 512-meg cart.". I wish someone would clarify on this. EDIT: So they miswrote, or weren't specific, not even sure how to classify it. The carts are indeed 64MB (megabytes), which is actually 512Mb (megabits).
I’m so happy this came out on the N64, I still remember getting it when it first came out and playing it alone in my room and being terrified. Good times!!
I rented this back in the day expecting a cut down version of RE2. It blew my damn mind when I realized that it was functionally all there, and then some. RE2 64 and Conker's Bad Fur Day were basically magic, lol.
I loved it more on the 64 than any other system. Just because they fit everything in the cartridge amazes me. Cost me 55 quid which was higher than any game at the time in 2000 for a 64 game. I saved up for weeks for that.
Still have the complete in box version of this I got as kid for Xmas years ago. When that dog crashed through the window I almost had a heart attack on first play through. lol.
I did go PlayStation instead of Nintendo back in those days but I thought it was awesome RE2 came to N64 and that it did well for the space they had to work with was pretty cool, but what confused me is even though it did well they had a missed opportunity of pulling the same thing by Releasing the first Resident Evil on N64 as well which would of been cool for the Nintendo players since they already got to play 2nd game but never first unless they had one of the other consoles that is, that said its all said and done ages ago was just kinda odd they didn't do it.
The was the first way I experienced the original RE2. I remember renting it from the video store a lot back in the early 2000s. I eventually found a copy of it on FB marketplace. Definitely a unique version of RE2. It also helped them to save space by cutting out one of the FMVs where Claire/Ada are talking to Annette in the sewer. I cant remember if it was Claire or Ada, but both the FMVs have the same voice. On every other version they are separate videos of Claire and Ada saying "are you telling me he injected the g virus into his own body?".
Where doom was done with total blackmagic for the snes, RE2 is indeed done with blackmagic for N64. Also, understand games who run their games native from a disc, has the same data multiple times spread around the disc for quick acces and less time of searching for the sectors the data should be in. And with that, sizes of ps1 games could be way way smaller.
4:04 Man, those FMVs were hugely compressed on the PS1, they simply were not shrunk like they did on the N64. Had they kept them in their original quality, they would've occupied most of the space on the CDs the actual game was stored on. There's a PC edition of the game that was only released in Japan, which was optimized for Windows Xp and was stored on a DVD rather than 2 CDs: DVDs store 4.7 GBs of data in their simplest form (multi-layered DVDs can store up to 17 GBs) and the FMVs from that version look better than any other edition as they are "uncompressed" (it doesn't mean much because it's unlikely Capcom ever received anything more than Mpeg-2 files from Imagica, the company who did all the CG work).
Capcom is usually really good with giving Nintendo fans quality ports. I like to refer to the Street Fighter Alpha 2 port for SNES. That port is actually amazing. So it's not a surprise that they would do the same with other major franchises.
Nintendo's biggest reason for carts was piracy. Bootleg versions of the Famicom were so prevalent in some countries that Nintendo's official releases were shut out (though coming out years later than Japan and US didn't help).
Claire A/Leon B/4th Survivor P.S. It was the Dual Shock PS1 version via S-Video for me as a kid...and then the GameCube port via component cables after that came out.
Did the N64 version of RE2 Allow the player to play as Leon and Claire all on the same cartridge without having to have 2 separate cartridges for each character like how the PlayStation edition had 2 separate discs for Leon and Claire?
Played this game with friends back when it was new and even then we were amazed that they were able to fit the game onto the N64. This and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES. Both marvels of technology
The VERY first Playstation game i ever played was Resident Evil 2. I was an N64 kid so i got this cart as soon as i could, probably for xmas or a birthday and played it so much. Went thru all the scenarios with both characters, unlocked all the special items and costumes. Unlocked Hunk mode and Tofu mode! Its one of the few games where the Expansion Pak greatly improves the graphics. And who could forget about combining it with the GameShark Pro, so many wacky codes to alter the game and make it even more fun. As many did i foolishly sold my n64 stuff as the next console came along, but when i re bought an n64 about 10 years ago, i absolutely had to get re2 again.
I remember that the N64 version of this game was very expensive at the stores because of the cart size. It’s cool they made the game on there sure. But the consumer had to pay a ton to get this release compared to the PS1 version.
I owned this version of RE2! Loved how you could change the blood to green or blue! I only beat the A scenario once & didn't play the B scenario, as i wasn't aware of how easy it is to avoid Mr X.
Cartridges had the ability to save without a memory card was a main factor for me switching. When I did get my PlayStation and a memory card tho it was game over.
devs in the 90s: we have to compress 1gb into 47 mb
devs today: we need 100 extra gb to fit the main menu
We have fallen as a society
I know right 😭 I both love and hate how we can update games in the modern era because of this.
@@BLOODY__FATALITY I look at it as a "Monkey's Paw" kind of situation.
not 1gb, more like 500mb. plus the downgrades even less.
So with all of this in mind, could they have put FFVII on the N64? What about with assistance from the expansion pak and the N64DD attachment?
Resident Evil 2 on the N64 was my first experience with survival horror, and I've loved it ever since.
Same! I love it till this day.
Same girl, same! Good times. 🥹
Same here. It terrified me to no end but was so good I didn't care.
My first survival horror was Manhunt. I thought it was very unnerving booting it up for the first time.

I gave my son a n64 for christmas today, only because the carts are still alive to this day.
Ok, MVG85! 😉
Exactly what I thought.
I rented this back in the day expecting a cut down version of RE2. It blew my damn mind when I realized that it was functionally all there, and then some. RE2 64 and Conker's Bad Fur Day were basically magic, lol.
There are so many N64 games I missed out on I need to go back and checkout. This being one of them. Thanks for the vid!
But it did and it showed everyone that you can create a lot when you take effort
What a coincidence, I’ve been stuck in rabbit hole about this exact game the passed few days !
It was actually my first RE experience and I have been hooked ever since.
This was proof we could've had other great ports with FMV too. Problem was, sales would've had to surpass cost.
I remember when they explained this years ago on release date in various magazines.
It's amazing how this goofy, B-movie horror series has grown to become one of gaming's best franchises. RE is something else.
Claire A/Leon B/4th Survivor
P.S. It was the Dual Shock PS1 version via S-Video for me as a kid...and then the GameCube port via component cables after that came out.
I wonder if they could've allowed you to skip the door loading screens or if those were still essential to make it all work?
Did the N64 version of RE2 Allow the player to play as Leon and Claire all on the same cartridge without having to have 2 separate cartridges for each character like how the PlayStation edition had 2 separate discs for Leon and Claire?
I got my original n64 RE2 to this day!!!! A masterpiece
Played this game with friends back when it was new and even then we were amazed that they were able to fit the game onto the N64. This and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES. Both marvels of technology
You didn't mention that the N64 version cut the "Ex Battle Mode" from the game
It’s interesting how games transfer across systems.
Bought this back in the day, Xmas 99. So amazed they had an adult game for N64, was a first
It was how I first was introduced to the resident evil series, had a friend get a copy of it and we played through it on my 10th birthday.
The need to make a trilogy collection remastered at full price ... ill buy it with my eyes close
I still have my original copy from middle school. I play it to this day!
Still can't believe the Nintendo 64 is going to be 30years old.
Yeah Resident Evil 2 on N64 was way better than Playstation in Every conceivable way
An RGT docu upload?
yes please and thank you.
Those were my thoughts as well as a kid, and the same thing happened with the remake of Resident Evil 1 in the gamecube!!!
I never had this version, but I still go back and play my PS version of RE2 even though I love the remake.
Only time Nintendo has used CD roms is the Wii/WiiU and GameCube, just something i never thought about
