What Makes SpaceX's Suits So Good?

- Опубликовано: 23 июл 2024
- Created by the Hollywood costume designer behind Batmans’ iconic rubber six-pack, SpaceX’s snazzy new spacesuit pairs the bold lines of a couture tuxedo with the utopian optimism of vintage sci-fi.
How did they make it so trim? And is it really the same suit Elon Musk blasted into the inky void behind the wheel of his cherry-red Tesla roadster?
Join us today as we model the ultimate in wearable tech and learn what’s so special about SpaceX’s Astronaut Suit.
Back in May of last year veteran NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken blasted off from Florida in a test flight to the International Space Station.

I was actually thinking that to
they're great suits, but they're also strictly for if the capsule depressurized, unlike the space shuttle suits which had to be able to be able to float and escape from the shuttle (as useful as that was...)
So you think that having a higher safety level is bad or useless? Because having safety is never a bad thing.
Improvements suggested in NASA after accident reports included additional bump, impact, and neck protection. These suits do not include these features. Specific warning was given to not put all faith in the seat straps because they can fail under severe forces. Something resembling motorcycle racing gear with neck brace would be better. Some impact absorbing materials can also potentially help mitigate radiation exposure to some degree.

Not the first time the fashion industry was involved with space suits. The original moon suit was partly designed by Playtex. And just as well too- traditional engineers were coming up with something that looked like a cross between a minisub and a robot from a fifties' SF movie.
What do aliens think when they pass by that Tesla in space lol
To even imagine a normal car in that supposed environment is comical.
From a design point of view I think the boots make the suit look really naff.

The whole thing looks naff. I’ve hated the style since the moment I saw it. I hate traditional male formalwear in general, though, so it’s a given with their design. The NASA suits had a charm and aesthetic appeal that will last generations while these will be forgotten by the next cultural cycle.

I am thankful to live in a time where an American entrepreneur doesn’t have to rely on government for exploration of space. The current Astronauts gave it a 5 star rating and said it was even better than what NASA is currently using speaks volumes. Not only is it functional but “looks cool” it’s not just that but it more importantly inspires the younger generation into pursuing the space program. That too me is brilliant and something we’ve been needing for a long time. Make space exploration great again!
It will be cool if spaceX launched a dummy like starman but call it stargirl or something for the first orbital test of starship.

Simply Amazing!
Not at all
Space X already have fantastic engineering so why the need to overhype? It's a cabin suit not a space suit and it's an inner system ship, not a starship.
More hype= more public interest more public intrest= more public investors more public investors= company stocks do better companies stocks do better=more large investors such as hedgefunds more large investors=more money to spend on sending cars into space.
Essentially, if there is an opportunity to make things look better, it's a good business decision to do so. Sticking with the old orange cabin suits, which to my knowledge only offer advantages over these in rare circumstances, doesn't help business. Redesigning the EVA suits would be really difficult, as making them less functional is really risky, whilst making them more functional is really difficult, especially if your trying to make them look good. So cabin suits it is. As for it not being a starship, that doesn't matter. Space is space.
@@Santisima_Trinidad Fair point. Hype works on the stock price in the short term provided you deliver in the longer term.
As for space being space, a word becomes pointless when it applies to everything. There's space down here as well which doesn't make my car a spaceship except in my imagination. :-)
@@DeclanMBrennan true. But space applies to all space, be tgat inner system space, galactic space, or universal space. Space.
@@Santisima_Trinidad Which would be a good argument if it was called "Spaceship" rather than "Starship". And yes I know that the sun is technically a star but stars normally refer to other systems.

It never hurts to look your best in any situation!
Good styling means that a full range of motion is available, to allow the wearer to stand, sit, flex, rotate. Tailoring these suits to the individual makes them... clothes, rather than universal sacks.
So, yes, styling is essential.
One of the major complaints about shuttle-era suits were that they were bulky and restrictive. Restriction and bulk aren't things you want in an emergency situation.
Not to mention, stylish suits take up less storage space. Yet another point for style.
Shuttle era flightsuits are slightly less relevant to this design than the Apollo suits that could be plugged into either onboard air and cooling or into a portable backpack for walking on the moon. Apollo suits used connectors on the chest, not a combination connector on one leg. Apollo suits were also white and disposable, with various parts getting thrown overboard during the return trip.
