    You've had such an interesting life and career. I feel fortunate to benefit by it from your channel. What sets you apart from others is the terrific quality of the photos that you've taken over your career. Always quite impressive. I'm about to purchase a Pentax S3 with an Auto Takumar 55mm F/1.8 lens. I'm buying it for the lens, but I'm going to follow your procedure of attempting to bring the camera back to life and see what happens. I agree with your oncologist.

    David Bailey was under contract to Vogue magazine to shoot fashion photographs.
    In the contract he was supposed to use large or medium format film.
    So he found a film studio in NYC who enlarged the 35mm negatives up to 6x9 cm.
    Thereby he technically fulfilled the terms of his contract. The photographs were ground breaking and pioneering in the fashion world of the early sixties.
    So, Peter you won a camera and got to meet Bailey. You have had a very interesting life
    Keep your enchanting stories and informative videos coming.
    Greetings from Stroud uk

    Hi Peter. I rarely leave comments but I wanted to say that I loved your story and your history on your Asahi Pentax S3. But I mainly wanted to thank you for this video as I recently acquired an S3 for myself for a whole Aud$25. It had some issues with the shutter speeds and the mirror sticking.
    After watching your video I was confident that I could fix it up and get it fully functional again. So following along with what you did, I had done the same and lo and behold it's working completely fine and I've got it's first roll of film in it for the first time in who knows how many years!
    So thank you for showing your process as I've now brought mine back to life and I can't wait for a sunny day to get some of its first shots in!

    Lovely surprise to find a new video uploaded to watch, fortunate to be able to hear the story and see the pictures of a camera in the past and now present. been shooting film with a recently acquired rolleiflex up here way north of you, and already have been stopped by a few people to ask ' can you still get film for those cameras, and "it's been a long time since ive seen old film cameras in use!" and had a story of times past with camera told to me with a smile. Just like you have in your video.
    Dont get that with digital cameras, going beep beep and annoying looks as you zap away. Appreciate the videos, hope to see more tales of cameras, photos. Wishing you a lovely Christmas and and happy holidays.

    I think this has to be my favourite of your videos so far. I was given a North American spec 'Honeywell' Pentax H3v when I was 14, to replace my damaged Kiev 4A. The old Pentax had been used in Kenya by my uncle in his work as a Methodist Missionary. He also used a 135mm and 300mm Takumar lenses for wildlife photography there. On return to England, he worked as a reporter for the Methodist Recorder until he retired. I used the H3v a great deal, until the shutter blind ribbon broke and it was deemed beyond repair. I wonder just how many films had been through it over the years? As a treat, I bought myself a Asahi Pentax Sv, which is the same but built for European sales. I brought it back to life using the methods you describe, and it is almost as nice as the H3v. I have never seen an SLR with a quieter shutter than that H3v.
    The world and the internet needs more people like you, Peter. Keep snapping!

    Great story! My oldest Ashai Pentax is an S circa 1958, but it has no particular significance to me. MY special camera is my very first Nikon F2 that I bought when they were first available in the US. I traded a Leica IIIC, a Nikon F and a chunk of cash for the camera, a 50mm f/1.4 lens and an MD-1 motor drive. I still have all three of those as well as 30+ other older Nikons and 100+ other film cameras, but if my house was on fire, that Nikon would be the camera I grabbed. I'm glad that you were able to reunite with your old friend. Now if I could only locate my Alpa 10D...

    Inspiring stuff Pete. Good story too - £87 in 1961 - what a fortune! I have the S3 too though only acquired it in the last two years. Got mine working just as you described with the sewing machine oil trick, though have to admit I used far too much. So I will take your tip on board and use a little brush in 'one drop only' when I renew my many other old Pentax SLRs of that era. Nothing I enjoy more than getting an old camera working or an old lens cleaned. Glad to see you looking pretty well all things considered. Keep up the good work, it's greatly appreciated.

    From a purely personal standpoint, the S3 is my favorite screw-thread Pentax. I adore the super low-profile frame counter, the lack of a meter, which means the shutter dial is just a shutter dial, and has no asa/iso doo-hickey. The ever-ready [Never-ready?] case has a lovely little leather strap and clip rather than the ubiquitous great tripod screw.

    Great story. Had no idea you had to be a doctor/scientist/other important person to buy a camera in England after the war! :D I got 2 black spotmatics and 1 black k2 I found second hand, I wonder about what photos they have taken sometimes.

  • @av8bvma513
    @av8bvma513 7 лет назад

    Excellent video, many thanks for doing this. "Just hold a Pentax" was the tagline for many of the ads of the era, and strangely enough, for advertising spin, it is quite true, that if you hold a Spotmatic, and work the wind lever and shutter, you will discover how good it can be. Tip for wanna-be camera repairers:Use the very smallest screwdriver, dip it in the oil and pickup a drop about 1/2 the size of a grain of rice. Touch this carefully to the teeth of the gears, and the shafts as close as you can get to the bearings. Also all wiping surfaces, for example, cams and levers. Brushes are all very well for some things, but the bristles can drop into the mechanism, not good.

    • @theoldfilmbloke
      @theoldfilmbloke  7 лет назад

      WoW ! YES -- good tip about bristles coming off brushes -- I usually used thin 'electrical FUSE Wire' but most people have those 'circuit breakers' now so NO Fuse Wire !

    I was so impressed with this wonderful video demonstration + story that I have now acquired the same camera as yours- a pentax S3.
    The camera itself is in excellent condition for its age, however there is a problem with a sluggish shutter blind.
    On closing the blind remains partly open on all speeds.
    Is there an easy fix for this?
    Also, are there any rules for setting the shutter speed dial to avoid damage to the mechanisms?
    I hope you are keeping well.

    Allowing for inflation, your Pentax cost about £1800 in 2016 money Peter. I wish the chap I sold my plain prism, low number Nikon F to years ago would sell it back to me!
