      I know, I really want to go out to Show Low and hunt for more of the druzy wood! It's smoky qtz druse, I just love it!! I meant to send you a pic for the show and tell but had to work late yesterday and missed the deadline! Fun show with good stuff tonight!

      Oh, and how crazy is it that Dustin found the lace agate and traded it with Doug, who traded it to me??? Small world!

  • @dustinfindsrocks
    @dustinfindsrocks 2 года назад +3

    What?! No way!!! I found that big druse piece it’s from Haunted Ridge. Doug must be someone I sold or traded rocks to! It’s a re-healed piece of lace agate druse quartz with chalcedony and limonite pseudomorph after marcasite on top. Super cool piece right?! I’m glad you have it now. 😊 I think that wood may be brilliant wood from LA.

    Daaaang!!! That pet wood was insaaaane! I have a huge chunk of mookaite too, pretty much same size, but those colors are better than my specimen. I wish I had the means of cutting and polishing it. I don't want to ruin it. Those are some cool agates too and that really dark druzy patch, neat! I'm hoping I can do some fossil hunting in the Mazon Creek area this spring and summer and get some cooler stuff to trade with people. So fun and exciting to see mail call videos. The stuff you sent is still my favorite and on its own shelf. Thanks for sharing 😁🤘

      My eyes about popped out of my head when I saw that wood! I love druzy wood, and have a small piece of this same material, but this just blew me away!
      Also, the stuff I got from you is awesome! I love the carnelian, and the crazy silicified quartzite/agate things I haven't identified properly yet! I forgot I hadn't made a reveal video of the stuff you sent yet cause I was in the chaos of packing and moving, but I still have all the clips so I'll work on that!

    Amazing! I’m so glad I found your channel and can’t wait to watch all of your videos! I have lived in Clovis Nm all my life and always wanted to get into rockhounding. I have been researching for the past couple weeks and I already have several trips planned across the state. I have access to a 5000 acre ranch on the cap rock about 15 miles West of Grady. Do you think this would be a good place to find anything cool? Over the years I have found a ton of petrified wood and arrowheads there but never really looked for anything else.

    • @GeoRockNerd
      @GeoRockNerd  2 года назад +1

      Southeastern NM has Triassic and Cretaceous aged rocks in outcrop, depending on where you are - prime areas to hunt for fossils! The Ogallala caprock can contain interesting things too, like chert/jasper etc. The Triassic redbeds can have dinosaur and reptile bones (illegal to collect but not if you’re on private land!), fragments and teeth (along with petrified wood) and Cretaceous rocks are a great source of interesting marine fossils in the State, depending on which formation you encounter. Arroyo channels that cut down through rock layers are prime areas to go hunting. River gravels in NM often have chert, jasper, pet wood, and even agate and all those would be possible in that area. There’s probably gypsum or selenite out there too, a lot of the formations have evaporite layers in them. Keep an eye out for meteorites as well, you never know! I’m jealous, exploring 5K acres would be so fun!

    I came to your channel to ask you a question, only to discover that I hadn't watched your last video. I don't know what happened there. I'm kind of in love with that Mookaite, was that dendrites that I saw on it? If I recall correctly, the MO agates tend to frequently get limonite deposits on them, was that the ferrous oxide on that piece? Well, there's 2 questions and not the one I came to ask. I'm an over achiever today I guess. I got a box of rocks from a guy in Idaho yesterday, and there was a bag of mystery stuff. When I saw the pic before he sent it I thought it was amygdaloidal basalt. It is an amygdaloid of some sort (I think), definitely not basalt (or rhyolite). It's an off white color, super porous, and some of the holes are filled with agate, most not. I thought it was coral when I got the first glance, then bone, then maybe palm wood after holding it for a few seconds. I quickly went to tuff and think that's closer to the mark, but still off. I did a "scratch test" this morning, my steel cleaning pick dug in pretty easily but a fluorite crystal didn't make a mark on it. It did slightly erode the point of the crystal. Some areas of it have a blue/green hue, almost like it was chlorinated (chloritized?) at some point and the edges at least are pretty brittle, it chipped off with the steel pick. Any clue what it could be without a picture or sample of it and just a semi technical description? Thanks for reading all that and for all the help with that magnetite I sent Chris. That stuff had been in a box for 15 years and I had almost completely forgotten about it.

      Hi Ken! Yes, good eye, there are dendrites on that mookaite! A lot of the MO drusy have limonite or other oxide after marcasite on them, not exactly sure but could be limonite in this case! As far as the white rock with little agates…you sure those aren’t opals? What you’re describing sounds like Spencer opal material - white rhyolite with opal nodules. Look up Spencer opal mine geology and see if what you have looks like that.

      Thanks for your kind comment Jimmy! I have a few videos to edit and upload eventually, but sadly I moved to the Inland Northwest for work and rarely go hounding anymore. NM is just unbeatable for the amazing geology and rockhounding opportunities and it’s not really like that where I am now. I will try to get the rest of my NM stuff uploaded though! Thanks for watching!

    Help! I started a RUclips channel last year and made a big mistake! I shot a rock hounding video kind of just fooling around for the photo ops. I did not do a lot of research or do I know anything about the hobby. However, the video has strangely kept getting views and also subscribers. The area around my house is open range littered with petrified wood. I guess the short of it all is I found your videos and read your info and was hopping for advice about what the law is about rockhounding on state land and Cibola national park.

    • @GeoRockNerd
      @GeoRockNerd  2 года назад

      Greetings fellow rockhound and RUclipsr! You’ve come to the right place, I worked for the NM State Land Office for 8 years and now work for a fed agency!
      You can collect rocks, gems, minerals and invertebrate fossils from public FEDERAL land (Forest Service/BLM), as long as it’s for personal/non-commercial use and you only take a “reasonable” amount. If you do any surface disturbance, such as dig a hole, you need to fill that in. Always check the BLM website for information about any mining claims that are in the area you are interested in, and avoid any claims as it is illegal to harvest anything off of someone else’s legitimate claim. BLM manages all mineral claims and leases for all Federal lands.
      As far as State Lands go, in NM it is illegal to collect rocks and minerals casually from any State Lands aka State Trust Lands. It is illegal to trespass on State Lands as well, they are not free-use/free access like Federal public lands, they are lands managed by the State that generate revenue via leasing for oil & gas, minerals, grazing etc. You can get a recreational permit from the State Land Office that will allow you to hike/camp/bike etc on State Lands for $25. And if you find a mineable resource such as a nice deposit of flagstone or decorative petrified wood or geodes, the minerals department can work out a lease for you. But no casual rockhounding allowed on NM State Lands, so make sure you stick to Federal land for that. Hope this helps!

      @@GeoRockNerd Thanks so much for that I live on the edge of what the Navajo call state land and Navajo land is some where near also, but Cibola national forest is open for casual rock hounding. I want to do a video on this and need the facts. I became frustrated with the whole thing after discovering so many rules and laws.

    • @GeoRockNerd
      @GeoRockNerd  2 года назад

      @@mountaintopbob It is certainly frustrating! The NMSLO has a public website, and on it is a great interactive map section where you can turn different layers on and off and zoom into areas to check ownership records and so forth. Highly recommend checking it out so you can get a better idea of who owns what around you. Blue on the map means the State owns the surface AND the minerals, brown means the State only owns the minerals, so the surface could be private or Federal. mapservice.nmstatelands.org/LandStatus/

      @@GeoRockNerd Thanks for all this help. I had no idea so many people were interested in rockhounding more impotently I had no idea my wife was, so now I am getting it from my RUclips viewers and her to do more rockhounding and video it. There is one area i found between here and the lake that is literally covered in petrified wood and rocks of all shapes sizes and colors. we get strong winds up here and every time it blows hard more is uncovered. I am happy I found your channel and have subscribed I'll be looking at your videos for reference as I find new and interesting stuff I do own five acres of my own and it to is littered with rock and fossils. Thank you very much.
