I've been searching for a better and more successful way to germinate seeds and then I came across this tutorial by chance, within a few hours I put together a similar system and the results have been excellent. Thanks for sharing your Knowledge.
I had this idea last night to grow salads in the house over winter. Also thought to do your terra planter idea with this so I could grow spring onions up the side of the terra planter
Again, very informative. When you started this recording, I was waiting for you to come out with a purple scarf and discuss our destiny lol.... Great work again!!!
Absolutely fantastic. I have a month ago applied your previous method where you were using the sprouting 3-tier towers. I have instead used strawberry and mushroom punnet open containers, and had far better success rate of germination than seedling soil. Many thanks for showing this approach, the benefit here this time is top-up frequency and slow release due to terracotta porosity. I do wonder though how long the pot will last until the wicking effects subside leaving the nutrients to build up over time.
Oh that looked like gravel instead of soil, that's pretty cool! I don't have much of a green thumb, but I'm hoping to change that since I want to grow a medicinal Garden on my patio. I want that Tara planter I just found out about, but this looks like it would be good for bigger produce that wouldn't necessarily thrive on the Terra planter.
How did the system hold up for the pores? Did the nutrient solution clog them up / slow down the flow or was it capable of remaining working? This looks like a very interesting method of doing it! Gives me sooo many ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Very interesting video, will need to give this a try. How would you rank this against the flood/drain method in your previous video? This method seems much easier and, aside from checking the water/nutrient level, a set-it-and-forget-it method
As you said, but it would be a bit messier to dunk it and not all seeds will mature at the same rate. So the other method is still my preferred for my use.
Love it!! Thank you so much for the video!! Where I come from it is difficult to find perlite and vermiculite, what other growing media can I use? Will clay pebbles work as well?
Would this work in a shallower outer pot with the inner pot coming up above the level of the media? I usually start seeds in about 2 inches of media at most and would love to be able to set up something like this that will allow me to have enough of a reservoir that I can leave it unattended for several days for when I need to start seeds but will be travelling.
mine isn't wicking to the same degree as shown in the video either. Notice in the footage his drainage saucer is full of water in some of the shots. Wonder how much if any top down watering is being done. also using 10 inch diameter 4 inch high outer pot and a 4 inch diameter 4 inch high inner pot. Perhaps the inner pot needs to be a larger diameter? or my inner pot sits directly on the outer pot at the bottom no media between the bottom of the inner and outer pots. There is some moisture getting transferred to the media but not enough to get the moisture meter past dry reading.
Instead of using a coin and the silicon could you not block it with thick cotton wick?or perhaps I can find a terracotta pot without the hole in the bottom?
The “Leca” systems I’ve seen are basically a cross between kratky and Dutch bucket systems using hydroton clay balls. If this is what you’re referring to then probably not. Hydroton has little moisture retention, too much drainage, and moisture is needed for germination.
@@ABUFARAH22 yeah I sprayed it all down and it got a good majority of the algae and roots out. You can soak it in vinegar or bleach solution to clean it deeper, but I didn't. I let it lay in the sun to dry out
Yeah these are BAC organic liquid nutrients. I’ve been testing out a few different brands. Though at this stage of growth it’s mostly natural seed nutrient providing their growth. www.baconline.co.uk/organic-products/organic-nutrients-for-plant-growth
Vaughn Hughes there’s no substrate for it to wick into, if you wanted to keep a closed bottom system you could make the pot plastic and not have a hole in the bottom. But it would stop oxygen exchange and would be hard to empty stagnant nutrient.
Are you worried at all about salt buildup in the pearlite due to the plants drinking more water and leaving behind excess nutrients? Or, are you going to directly flush the pearlite with low EC nutrients every so often?
ABUFARAH I’ve reused before, I’m going to do an ep on it. It would be best to heat sterilise it, but you could only do it a few times I assume before you get a build up of organic material that might compromise the mix.
Not good using 20 cent piece, the metals are toxic, includes nickel. Also it against Australian law to deface coin of the realm. 🤓🤓🤓..... edit ....... great idea just the same , looking forward to your updates, think probably a good way to do sprouts. 😎😎😎
Do you have learning disabilities Annette? Only reason I ask is that he clearly states around the 30 sec mark of the video where he got the idea from. I hope you're ok...
That’s the best bowl of popcorn I’ve ever seen
0:14 That's a nice nutrient solution dispenser you have there...

Using a zeer to grow plants is a genius idea. would be a great way to garden in desert climates.
This is an artful seed starting method! Thanks for sharing definitely going to give it a try
This is cool! I didn't think the Hydroponics Nutrients would be able to be absorbed through the Terracotta pot or not.
I was at bunnings today and they have plastic plugs for the indoor plant pots
This is like the better version of a Dutch bucket! Imagine if you could 3d print clay... Wait a second! 🤔 Diy hydroponic pottery!
It just goes to show that zero dislike means people appreciate plant people.
I had this idea last night to grow salads in the house over winter. Also thought to do your terra planter idea with this so I could grow spring onions up the side of the terra planter
That’s similar to a wicking bed. How about a comparison between a wicking bed and a flood and drain?
Very cool! I will definitely give this a go in the future.
Beer on Tap! Plant life is baller!

Just started this one today. Hope it goes well.
Pretty neat idea for seedlings 🙌

Just run water through on occasion, or soak the pot. Should remove salt build up.

Soooooo my next project! Thanks Hoocho!
Cool! Bingewatching after your Terraplanter DIY.
Free advertising --- take the sales tags off of your pot and replace it with your logo.
I’m definitely going to do this but am curious about the pot sizes you’re using.
I came from your terraplanter video, and am loving the combination of gizz and plants.
Cool stuff! I think this would work really well for basil too!
I love this and so does my daughter! What size pots did you use?
Yes u should be wearing a mask, investigate home brew beer filter for kegging. Love your work bro.
This is prettier and less mess than the reg method. What is the nutrient u put on the pot and what about light? Thanks for the method!
Perlite and vermiculite? Could sharp sand be used to make it cheaper?
Will definitely try this! What do you use for your hydroponic solution? And awesome tunes! Love your channel!

Remains working fine. You can always flush with water.
@@Hoocho Fantastic, great to hear! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly too! I can't wait to try this method.
Next week on Hoochos, can seedlings sprout from a beer filled Olla? This is dope though, I’m making one for sure.
How else do you get hops to germinate?
Would probably be a great setup to grow green onions.
This is a fantastic idea.
Dude your channel is awesome!
Subscribed for the gizz tracks ✌️
I would like to see how far out the moisture goes in the ground?

Also this uses A LOT of media.
@@Hoocho how about use a different container like a shallow one but wide and use the same small clay pot.. hopefully it will work
Love it!! Thank you so much for the video!! Where I come from it is difficult to find perlite and vermiculite, what other growing media can I use? Will clay pebbles work as well?
It requires a medium that wicks water, perhaps coco. If not you can always use soil and water (if not using hydroponics)
Hey mate nice system. But I’m lost on if you seal the hole little pot how’s does water wick out?
Corzer Lowe the pot is porous
Right’o I got yah it releases through the pot never know that one. 🤠👍
How does the water get out the small pot?
The water passes through the terracotta,.
How does the nutrient go from the central pot to the outside ring?
The porosity of the pot allows the solution to diffuse through slowly.
Would this work in a shallower outer pot with the inner pot coming up above the level of the media? Hi mate, love your videos great work. What nutrients did you use for this one?
These are BAC Hydroponic nutrient, but most of the nutrient would have come from the seed.
We’re these pots just standard Bunnings terracotta pots? My Olla doesn’t seem to be wicking water out...
Standard Bunnings unglazed pot

Not all cay pots are the same, perhaps some are more porus than others.

Amazing video!
Do you think that this would work for a hydroponic system with leca balls?
Cheers from Austria😉

@@HoochoOk, thanks man!👍
do you reuse the vermiculite + perlite after you transplant that?
I was wondering this as well, how many reuses can you get out of each cycle
I've reused perlite in a larger system before. It's pretty easy to clean, and any small roots left over aren't problematic.
@@alexandriacrause2972 wow thats good..
how do you clean them? just water?

the Perlite and vermiculite, is it reusable and how to sterile them after using it so i could use it again.

In the beginning, you kinda sound like Johnny Depp!
This ancient technique will take a lot of money to buy claypots, haha
May ollas change ph of water up ?
Нарек Григорян the material is inert, the clay is similar to that when using hydroton clay balls. Otherwise it would also change soil PH.
Mmmmmmm Yum perlite beer :)
I don’t drink beer associated with the word ‘lite’

Not defacing, just hiding the money for emergency.
it's against Australian law to deface coin of the realm - but it's OK for politicians to destroy your wealth? (not just Oz - it's universal)
