Happy Hydroponicing!
Hoocho, I am SUPER proud of you. Not only have you turned around a bad situation last year but you have honed in on what people need to inexpensively produce food! You are a LEGEND!! Keep doing what you're doing because it is really helping me and therefore I'm sure everyone else!!!
Also like "Thanks for helping guys" LOL
Id recommend checking what material those bags are made of before purchasing, the first link is LDPE which is fine if not in contact with direct sunlight for a long time but the secondlink specifies no material and some cheap plastics arent that healthy, hence why they arent resuable and just used for packaging
EDIT: As i expected, you explained it :D
Here in Australia most Bunnings (Aussie home depot equivalent but better), stores have a big recycle bin for plastic garden pots and you can get as many as you want for free!
i ain’t ever seen that in my bunnings, what state are you in?
@@Slavicplayer251VIC
Thank you Hoocho, I was buying the already made bags with holes in them, now you will save me heaps making my own flat bags for my ginger ect. I use a cement mixer as well. Love your videos. 💚🌻
Glad to be a help 😊
Nice 1 Mr Hoocho. A excellent cost saving alternative and fully customizable concept
You mentioned putting gravel in the bottom and trying that out. I'm in the 120F+ desert and blowing oven-like winds, so I try to keep water in all of the trays of my plants 24/7. To avoid root rot, I always make sure the planters have a combination of sand and vermiculite and anything else inorganic at the bottom for what will be underwater. It helps to prevent rotting and anaerobic conditions, plus being closer to the actual potting medium, it helps to cut down on the water perching effect.
The link has material thickness in microns so 4mil for us in the US is what he is using. Best price, and selection I've found is Uline. They also have 6mil.
Can you leave a link from uline's site, please?
black LayFlat Poly Tubing
Uline price is better but shipping is very expensive. Amazon was the better value I found with free shipping
Where I live, cat food comes in bags made from similar material. We turn them inside-out and grow cucumbers vertically against a frame with netting.
I can also take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your experiences.
Great idea. Upright pots or lay down bags from the same material. Hopefully this spring I’ll have a small setup until I arrange more space🍺🍺
great idea mate, you are a smart cookie for coming up with all these ideas, well done
Good to see you thriving sir.
Brilliant!
I love this idea and as a bonus, I get to see your results throughout our winter! (I'm near Chicago, so total opposite of you, but you keep winter better with new ideas I watch when the snow piles high. This is the most non-OCD thing I have ever seen you make and I love it. I can do this without having a 3D printer and I think those bags would seal with just an iron and parchment paper. I will be trying this out next spring.
Big ol baggies 👌💚
Tig ol baggies
Subs are exploding! So happy for you man, your content is always top notch!
In my country, we've got platic pots that have white on the outside and black on the inside; they maintain water and moisture, plus the blashing hot sun light is very well compared to regular black platic ones.
I’d love panda film versions of this tubing (white on one side black on the other)
@@Hoocholol panda
Hope you’re well mr hooch
Using lay flat tubing is great. Will be attempting this method ASAP!
OOOHHHHHH!! Look out! Look who's saving us money!! BIG DOG!! Nice one mate
5:46 Outch 😅
have also seen people use old clothing and an old sewing machine to make grow bags!
Stanleypackaging has sold out of LayFlat Poly Tubing. Hope you got a slice mate haha
No affiliate here unfortunately haha
great idea. getting my old vac sealer out now lol. im sure i got lots of plastic i could use. could poke tons of holes for "air pot" root pruning style
Thank you - very useful video!
I wished they'd make it in opaque white. The sunlight here makes the container hot which is bad for the roots.
Welcome back to Hoochos
Good one Hoocho 👍
Thank you!!!
I’m in the USA. ULINE sells a Black Poly Tubing Roll - 6Mil 10”x1,000’ for $208 per roll. Does anyone have a better source?
Now thats an exellent bargain if growing alot👍🤓
I do this but sew them with needle and thread which is tiring cos I don't have the sealing machine
Just a note for you, you really should wear a mask when mixing perlite or vermiculite into mixes.
The dust is really bad for your lungs.
I might get some bigger LDPE tube, say 500mm which might make good potato bags.
Excellent video mate.
Awesome!
Hi Hoocho have you given any consideration to using a impulse sealer? It would allow you a bit more maneuverability when sealing your plastics. They also come in larger sizes than the vacuum sealers do. Love your videos keep them coming.
thanks for this comment, I missed these when trying to work this all out, also I was wondering how hoocho is sealing 350mm bags with a 300mm sealer, I guess he seals twice for each bag but doesn't show it, @5:51 you can see that the bag isn't sealed across in one go. Do you know anywhere in AU you can pickup a 40cm impulse sealer to a good price?
How does this system drain after a very heavy rain? We can get storms dumping 3-4" in a few hours...won't the open top bags design get flooded? Also draining through into the gutter reservoir could be an issue...
Howddy Hoocho , isn t nonwoven bags better than plastic??
Hi friend. When you said grow bag as well. I thought about the Air Pruning method Is this plastic going to be able for the "Air Pruning Method of Root's also ? Like a Fabric Pot has a mesh, weavings and breathable fabric.
4:12 It didn't burp....
9:55 It will depend on the width of your sealing appliance
I can't get any, everywhere is sold out Hoocho, they should give you some commission 😂
I use reusable wal mart shopping bags
What happens when it rains and fills the top of the soil? Should all of these have drainage holes at the mid portion or bottom?
Does peatmoss and perlite okay to use as well? Or my own composting dirt and fill the bags mixed with perlite? Thanks for the great tips and information.
Great vid as usual mate...
what thickness of poly tubing are you using? 4mm...6mm?
The smaller version of those works great for soapmaking. You can tie off the end or hit them with the impulse sealer(15 to 30 bucks)
By the way, the impulse sealer works faster and better as well as last longer. The heat tape is also cheaper to replace that it is on the vacuum sealers because you know namebrand and all that.
How do you use them in soapmaking?
@@jeremiahbullfrog9288 as a mold, i pour my shaving soap in, let it set up, and pull and cut then let cure for a few months... but because they can be hung they are a huge space saver
@@jeremiahbullfrog9288 I really thought I had answered this. I’m sorry.
I use them as tubes and tie off one end to actually pour my soap batter in.
At that point, it’s disposable, but easy to deal with and a role of tubing would last me for at least a year and probably several
@@stephaniavanvolkenburg5424 All good... I forgot all about it 30 seconds after posting my question lol... thanks for following up though, that's clever.
Great ideas I've learnt so much from you but please wet the pearlite down before mixing it'll save you from inhaling the nasty airborne particles which are very bad for you.
How do you know if it is uv stable. It doesnt say it in any of the descriptions. Uline in north america actually says theirs is not uv stable.
Anyone know if there is a Perth store in WA? The postage fees were too high from the links provided. Thanks. I will update the comment if I get to the answer first.
Gday mate, how do you do 500mm in that sealer?
great great stuff🍺
Where you buy bulk coco coir from?
How large a diameter pot have you made with this method? Do you think the seal will hold up at larger sizes? Thanks very much!
dangit, 12 hours late and the rolls are already sold out :P
i just call nursery's and ask them if i can have the plastic pots they are throwing out. i got 1000's for free. for anything larger than 10 gallons i use cheap grow bags
Can greens be organic if they’re grown in recycled plastic pots?
*organic heads explode*
😂
I jest, if you can get them free, power to ya!
@@Hoocho Yeah. I agree ideally i wouldn't use plastic but all ceramic would cost a fortune for the hundreds of pots i use. At some point you have to draw the line with how organic you are also. Unless your only growing from soil and compost made on your land there and watering from your own lakes and wells there is always something technically not organic around. Almost anyone can get pots for free if they live close to a few nurseries btw. The first one I call every year is more than happy to give me a couple hundred free pots out of there dumpster. A lot of times they aren't even the cheap disposable thin ones, I got like 20 thick plastic 10 gallons and a bunch of 5's that would normally cost 16 dollars a pot.
@@OrganicGreens Even with ceramic you can't guarantee its free of heavy metals, sometimes can be worse esp with those glazed ones. Unless your only growing from soil and compost made on your land --- i always have a chuckle when people say that, Did you test the soil and the stuff end up in compost?
Awesome. What is the expected lifespan of the bags once you start using them?
I’m not sure as I’ve not used them before or seen anyone else, but I will be sure to update as I go.
@@Hoocho thank you. I figured that as the bags get old/tear we can always make them into smaller bags and use for seedlings or cuttings etc.
@@Hoocho
Should last a couple of seasons at least. I made some hanging growbeds 8ft long x 30" wide, basically polypropylene woven weed barrier (10yr guarantee) attached to a rectangular timber frame (2x4`s ) with 3x3 fence post legs. The weed barrier forms a "hammock" in the frame (suspended in mid air) which is filled with compost. Its free draining and provides more oxygen to the roots than you can shake a stick at. If you fill it with coco you can add a sloped loop of greenhouse poly etc to direct the nutrient back to the reservoir. Dont use cheap spun weed barrier, it`ll fall apart.
Hi.. most of the commercial grow bags talk about being UV stsbalised which doubled the price. Doez UV stabalised medium maks a difference?
Has wicking been consistent and reliable for you?
In general or with these pots?
With these pots too early to say, but I can’t see it being a problem.
In general yes, very consistent, the quality of coco I use is very reliable. I’ve used coco that isn’t great, in that case it should be amended for nutrition and/or whether it’s hydrophobic.
Nothing worse than hydrophobic grow media.
@@Hoocho yuh, in general.
I need to try something new, these 45 degree summers are turning my Kratky buckets into root rot soup.
The grow bags seem to be the ticket and this video might be the video to get me to switch.
What is the thickness of these tubes? How many micrones?
Between 100-200 um, depends which one you buy.
I’ve got 100um which seem fine.
The nursery tubes I used as an example are 120 um
Can someone tell me a vaccum sealer that can seal 350mm that doesn't cost $600 or more?
EDIT: OK I think his is the one from big W and its also only has a 30cm max seal length so either he is folding the edges or he sealing twice to make up the difference (or he is using 300mm bags, not 350mm?)
The edges weren’t completely sealed. No need.

@@N1ghtR1der666 Not for my purposes
Here's some info I got from chatGPT
Black LDPE bags, like other plastic products, might contain various additives to enhance their properties during manufacturing. Some common additives that might be used in the production of LDPE bags include:
UV Stabilizers: Black LDPE bags often contain UV stabilizers to protect the plastic from degradation caused by sunlight exposure. This is important because black plastic absorbs more heat from the sun.
Colorants: Additives are used to give the LDPE bags their black color. These colorants can include pigments or dyes that are approved for food-contact applications.
Antioxidants: Antioxidants are added to plastics to prevent oxidative degradation, which can occur due to exposure to heat and light.
Slip Agents: Slip agents reduce friction between the LDPE surface and itself or other surfaces. They can improve the bag's handling and prevent sticking.
Processing Aids: These additives help during the manufacturing process by improving flow and reducing sticking.
Plasticizers: While less common in LDPE, plasticizers can be added to enhance flexibility. However, their use is typically more relevant in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) applications.
Do the same for recycled plastic growers pots…
sir pl. help i need hydroponic nutrient solution which you are using your farm how can i get in india
Naic ❤❤❤❤
I can't find a USA supplier this is so annoying. They must know he's spreading money saving secrets.
You’re looking in the wrong place. Try office supplies.
Uline carries them
It’s in their section for roles of adjustable size bagging. I’m sorry I can’t remember exactly what it’s called. But they have 100s of sizes from a half inch up to a foot across door so in both clear and black as well as in various thicknesses for each size and color.
You have nice modelisation skills, your models are well done, but man, your prints are crusty as hell ! Boogers and stringing all over the place.
wow diabolical.
