Episode 826 - University Challenge feat. Basil Zacharia Rodriguez (4/23/24)
/ chapo-trap-house
Art/Animation by Emily Halaka @emilyhalaka
Will interviews Basil Zacharia Rodriguez, an activist and student at Columbia University involved with Columbia Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) about the ongoing demonstrations taking place there. They discuss the goals of the protests, the media response, and the University’s economic interests in both Palestinian occupation and displacing New Yorkers in Harlem.
Then, Amber and Felix join to continue the discussion of the media freak-out over campus activism, as well as the trial of Donald Trump, and two reading series exploring the sexual pathologies of Spectator columnists and Rabbi Shmuley.

My first thought was that the guest needs to go to "don't be weird" bootcamp", learn to change their vernacular and better appeal to the normies.
But she's getting way more shit done than I am, so maybe I should go to "get shit done" bootcamp.
This podcast turned me gay, you will be hearing from my lawyers Mr Chapo

Thank you for interviewing campus activists. I was also so mad at the way msm has been covering them and it's great to hear the brave students tell their side instead of neoliberal war mongers trying to silence them

56:31 “The correct answer is that fat is converted to carbon dioxide and water. You exhale the carbon dioxide and the water mixes into your circulation until it's lost as urine or sweat. If you lose 10 pounds of fat, precisely 8.4 pounds comes out through your lungs and the remaining 1.6 pounds turns into water.”

Let’s be honest: if protesting isn’t allowed, then people will use other means to make their voices heard. Loud ones. History says that’s how this’ll go.

I came to comment exactly this, like same wording and everything. Glad I saw yours first doppelganger.
Keep in mind, the boomers you are speaking about are the rich ones. They have a stake in the status quo. The peace and justice boomers who kept protesting after Vietnam through nuclear weapons/Nicaragua/El Salvador/Iraq/Immigration/Palestinians are not like that. Even the people not as active. We are fighting very powerful forces.
Boomers raged over the uncommitted movement
The "peace and justice" boomers being "not as active" is exactly the problem. For anyone under the age of 50, and _certainly_ those under 30, the reactionary and conservative boomers who voted for Reagan, Clinton, W., and Trump, the lesser-evilists who collaborated in the MSM gaslighting campaign to make even tepid left-centrists like Sanders unelectable, and those who either gave up or sold out after the defeat of the New Left, if they weren't Goldwater Republicans or Birchers to begin with, are the very vocal and seemingly modal face of the baby boomer generation. If you've actually walked the talk all this time, you're certainly in the minority in your age group.
Too many who continued to think like you did stayed quiet for decades and let the trade unions and other workers' organizations rot and fester instead of keeping the flame lit. The rich boomers are ultimately to blame, sure, but let's not forget that your generation, by and large, have failed to improve the subjective conditions needed for a successful revolution after the organized left got turbofucked and subsequently lobotomized by McCarthyism, COINTELPRO, Gladio, etc. Today's youth are leaderless amnesiacs still picking up the pieces and only just rediscovering Marxism half a century later, still further behind in terms of organizational capacity than in the late 19th century.
...And yet you kids *participate* in the universities where you're protesting? Curious!
Exactly. People saying "If they were true leftists serious about their cause they wouldn't go to Columbia or any college for that matter."
Okay cool let's imagine they all dropped out. What's step 2? [REDACTED] the White House? Start a podcast?
@@NJdaniels96 More podcasts = More content = More dopamine = Gooder good. Mmmmmh
The problem here is that like all protests and 'movements' in the US these past few decades, is that they burst forth, unoriganised, as an expression of grief or frustration and lose all momentum eventually. Nothing will change until all movements converge, have concrete demands, and work/strike in perpetual and unshakable solidarity. We need to move past 'issue' based thinking.
This will blow over in a couple weeks and they'll all go back to class. The system wins if you just make some noise alone. Because it waits you out.
Well that’s the main mechanism that keeps the elites in control. The main thing they have to their advantage is organization. If the masses could be as organized, the elites wouldn’t be nearly as ubiquitous. We aren’t going to see “all movements converge” unless its part of the organizational planning of the ruling elite.
Conservatives punch cops in France dude.
At a certain point you have to see that we as consumers are complicit in this to at least some degree.
The difference between elites and masses is simply communication and organization. The masses are not physically capable of the type of unity that you see in the ruling class. This is a historical trend for all of post hunter-gatherer civilization. There are a multitude of reasons why this is, but the myth of democracy tends to prevail for most people. But actually the vast majority of civilization has been empire vs the masses. To an extent it has been social-psychologically deterministic
The reason they're unorganized is because the state systematically murders and jails leaders and organizers. That's why rich people who aren't stupid fund the state; that's its purpose. The state collapses once rich people cut funding to the point that it can no longer suppress resistance.
It doesn't mean resistance is pointless, or that even unorganized demonstrations can't have an effect. It does mean that it's disingenuous to criticize resistance movements in the U.S. (or anywhere, frankly) for being disorganized and leaderless. It's not a conscious choice made by these people, or a consequence of them being dumb or whatever, it's because the state is doing what it's paid to do. Resistance can't be organized until the state's monopoly on power is broken. As long as the state's monopoly on power remains, it will not allow organized resistance to its rule.
The way to get them to converge is to support them and use that momentum, not click your tongue at the fact that they are not individually exemplars of the general strike.
The sudden fucking police sirens in the background of the interview nearly gave me a heart attack as I was speeding down a country highway listening to this.

Israel has been doing this because they know they’re not indigenous to the land. Hence, they steal Palestinian skin to inject themselves to make them more tolerable to the sun in the land.

The administrators are probably focused on the money, but I bet they are also mad about being embarrassed by the students simply for broadcasting their various financial connections in a way that is clearly negative, which is not something that Columbia is willing to face or acknowledge. They expect the students to go along with the status quo, one in which the educational institution continues to portray itself as a bastion of free speech and democratic values, when in reality its indebted to capital, just like every other faulty institution in this country.
Amber sounds extra drunk lately. Hope she's ok!

'values to practice and live by for thee, not for me'
The worst part about all this is how much you guys want to criticize these kids. They are kids, still forming their ideologies. They exist in the society that created them and are attending the schools they are available to them. They are attempting to do good and hold a position the same as you. What do they get from 'the left?' Anger and derision. Instead of accepting them as fellow travelers who are putting comfort and status on the line you scoff at them for not doing enough. Ideological purity doesnt function in the real world. Either build bridges with those who share similar values or get nothing done. Feel smug in your superiority as the world crumbles.
Right but that's not gonna work either because the system punishes you for that in ways we can only imagine or read about in history books.
Amber isn't wrong in seeing the futility of it all.
The United States as it is currently known as well as all of its institutions and cultural enclaves cannot exist if the human race has a future worth a shit. Sadly, like Amber; you will never see that fact.
We are living in the common ruination of the contending classes that Marx wrote about; when is that gonna sink in?
I don't worship what Marx wrote about as if it were gospel. When is it going to sink in that he was just a man and not a religious prophet? Sounds like your answer is to either do exactly as a man dead many years now said or to do nothing? Also, what do you get out of telling people they will never see something and saying things like it will never sink in etc? Moral superiority from people who think in absolutes is pretty worthless for others. Make yourself feel better somewhere else. Deal with us as humans or don't waste our time.

The fact that the protests are still going on is definitely a positive sign that things are changing. I still just don't understand how divestment is supposed to work though. If Columbia sold their shares of Soda Steam or whatever, a different bank would just buy them.
Universities do definitely play a role in capitalism by technically and ideologically training up the next layer of workers, but I just don't see how it's possible to defeat imperialism by fighting the admin on individual college campuses. The people who could actually stop imperialism overnight are the port workers, truckers, and the rail workers who voted to strike in 2022 but were legally prevented from doing so. It sounds like those rail workers have plenty of reason to be upset with capitalism and our government considering it just screwed them over lol. It's a question of linking their grievances to the fact that they're being asked to transport ~$40,000,000,000 worth of weapons which they unwillingly paid for via their taxes, on top of being exploited as workers, despite there supposedly not being enough to pay for sick leave. Making that link will probably require the sort of party which Lenin talked about in What is to be Done. It's easier said than done I guess, but I don't see how else we can end imperialism.
A group only focused on one campus or on one topic (Palestinian liberation) will probably never be able to do that though since they just don't have those tactics and seem to think we can make individual imperialist institutions take on a fundamental different function through divestment while keeping capitalism in place, which I don't really think is true. In the same way, voting in AOC didn't make Congress 1% more socialist, it made AOC 100% less effective as a socialist.
tl;dr I'm glad that people are doing this, I just don't think these demands or tactics are going to achieve much unless they go beyond the campus and actually try to connect with actual workers by building something bigger than this one movement.
People start with where they are. Universities might not be the most egregious partners in crime, but come on. Everyone’s got a brilliant take on how these kids could be doing things better. Conveniently none of them suggest doing any of the hard work themselves. Everyone wants to direct the revolution from the comfort of their screen and keyboard
These students are getting beaten, arrested, suspended, expelled, doxxed, and blacklisted from getting jobs, all for engaging in a tradition of protest that America sucks its own dick over. They’re delivering a heavy blow to the credibility of our institutions and our country at the cost of ever having financial security.

As revolutionary actions grow, Chapo is becoming less and less relevant. Chapo's line is to provide snarky comments and say nothing will ever change and it is sounding more and more out of touch.
