    Good video thanks… the old ignition wire from the ignition switch has a resistor that reduces the amount of current not voltage to the coil. They did that to keep the points from pitting. The condenser helps as well. That resistor wire is bypassed anyway during start up, so the solenoid puts in a full, direct connection to the battery bypassing the resistor wire of the ignition you release the ignition switch to on it goes into the resistor wire . I installed my HEI with the old ignition wire with no issues.

      That is good to know. I wasn't aware of that. I had found different recommendations based on reduced voltage at the coil wire. I had less than 12 volts at that wire on a brand new battery so it made sense to me.

      @@WhitetailGarage putting a relay and a wire without the resistor is better anyway that you get new parts that old resistor wire has been there for 60 years so it’s better to change it like you did.

    I have a 68 Falcon with a 250 inline 6, i want to do an hei swap on it as well, i also like what you did with the electric fan. Im not too knowledgeable on wiring...any info on where you got the relay set up? I would like to do exactly what you did to mine...or do you think the igniter conversion for the points style distributor would be better? I don't have the money to drop on a DUI...so info on the relay setup and pigtail as well as the temp switch for the fan

      I would recommend the distributor I got only if you are OK with a potential oil leak. Apparently it is common in the cheap distributors and not the DUI. If you are worried about stay with a stock look, then upgrade points and ignitor. If you are not, I would go with a DUI. You save money with the unit I bought, cheapo in Amazon. Works like a champ but leaks a small amount of oil. As far as the wiring, the most inexpensive direction is to source the parts separately. Get a 30amp relay and google a basic electric fan wiring diagram.

    Thanks for taking the time to make a video and show us how to do it. What brand is the distributor or where did you get it from as I want to do the same as mine.

    • @WhitetailGarage

      I got this one off of Amazon. It does leak a little of oil that travels up the shaft, which I dont like. I have been told the DUI brand doesnt do that but it is way more expensive then the one I purchased.

    I installed my hei but for some reason the engine just turns can't get it to start what is the position it should be I put roter and pressure in same spot. What can I do next

    • @WhitetailGarage
      @WhitetailGarage  Год назад +1

      You want to make sure to stab it in the same exact orientation the rotor was in and make sure the firing order on the cap is correct. If you aren't sure about the orientation anymore then start at TDC and align it with number 1 on the cap. Make sure you are getting a solid 12v to the coil. The factory harness doesnt always have a full 12v.

    For your vacuum advance from distributor… i have a single barrel, would you connect vacum hose to carb or to manifold?

      Mine is a single as well. I connected here 24:17 to the manifold.

    Do you have a part number for that distributor? Found one from A team performance but never used their products before. Can't seem to find one from summit or jegs

    • @WhitetailGarage
      @WhitetailGarage  Год назад

      The A-team was the one I went with. A cheap short term solution. If you plan on staying hei long term, I wouldn't recommend the A-team. It leaks oil out of the shaft, badly. They are terrible with warranty as well. It did take care of my issue and wildly cheaper then the DUI but you get what you pay for. An eventual V8 swap will force a change for me.

    So far, how’s the hei doing and where could I order it from? I’m here in Texas as well. I have a 68 F100 with a 240 inline. I almost ordered 2 12 inch fans but now I see a 16 will fit. Is your Mustang a 5 speed?

    • @WhitetailGarage
      @WhitetailGarage  2 года назад

      It has been a few months and total engine performance is way better. Starts easier, runs smoother, and has more power. I bought a cheap unit that is leaking oil up the shaft of the distributor. I have reached out to the company and they are not helpful. I wouldn't recommend what I bought unless it is a short term solution for you. It was for me because I plan to put a V8 in it soon. For your truck you may look at a DUI, they are much more expensive but great support and great product. The 66 is a C4 automatic. It started life as a 3 speed manual but at some point was swapped before I bought it. The swap was complete and looks factory.

    what kind of relays are you using for the fan?

      Just a standard 40 amp relay. There are a ton of options on line. I ordered one with a pigtail for a cleaner install.

    What were your symptoms on your dizzy?

    • @WhitetailGarage
      @WhitetailGarage  2 года назад

      Mostly lack of power. It wouldn't run consistently either. Some times it ran decent (still no power) and other times it would struggle to stay running. With the new matched dizzy to carb, it is like a new car. Starts instantly, runs the same all the time, and way more power.

    what electric fan are you using?

    • @WhitetailGarage
      @WhitetailGarage  2 года назад +2

      Ended up going with the Spal 30101516 16" Straight Blade Low Profile Fan. It was low pro enough to fit in between the water pump and the radiator. The car stay perfectly cool always now. It is noisier then I would like, otherwise great.

      @@WhitetailGarage I am currently using the spal straight blades fan, a new aluminum radiator, new water pump and new 180 thermostat and still having overheating issues, do you have any recommendations? I am 19 years old and sometimes I lose motivation to continue fixing my mustang because I cannot solve the overheating problem. Thank you!

    • @WhitetailGarage
      @WhitetailGarage  2 года назад +2

      @@dsv2121 You have replaced everything in the cooling system. It must be engine or tune related. I'd suggest checking coolant for combustion gases. There are fairly inexpensive kits you can get to check that. Otherwise, knock out the easy stuff. Check your plugs, search online on how to read them. If they have a lot of miles replace them and then read them. Carb tune, wrong timing, bad distributor or combustion leaking into coolant passage could all lead to overheating. Also, check that you have a matching load-O-matic distributor to the right type of carb, that was an issue for me. I totally understand the lack of motivation. One step, one wrench turn, one test at time. You will figure it out and learn a bunch along the way. For me half the fun in these cars is becoming my own expert at them. Learning more everyday.
