Pope John Paul II visited Canterbury in 1982 and prayed at the site where Thomas a Becket was murdered, so this was not the first visit to the UK in four centuries. There is a plaque at Canterbury Cathedral marking the spot where Pope John Paul II prayed. I have seen it in person, and I have a photograph of it.
