Blackthorne affectionately describing the Thames in that era is so funny, considering how filthy it was then. Bro's like "I'd take you the giant shitty sewage river we got in London. You can smell it for miles. If you drink from it you'll shit yourself to death. Sometimes there's even bodies in it."
I think it’s sweet. Their world is brutal, so to see them appreciate the little things and the differences in their cultures felt very wholesome
What Blackthorne was eating was natto or fermented soybeans. Anything fermented is an acquired taste.

That's probably because the guy who did the special effects for the cannon scene was also one of the FX people for _The Boys._

Natto is fermented soy beans. It smells like the insole of an old gym boot and has the consistency of lumpy mozzarella and the texture of okra. It is absolutely an acquired taste but is possibly one of the healthiest foods on the planet.

The UK does get earthquakes, but they are few and far between and most are too small for us to even feel them, benefits of being far from any fault lines. Interestingly though the UK is the tornado capital of the world, we get far more than any other country, but again, like the earthquakes, they tend to be quite small and not do much damage.

Based on one of my favorite books. Blackthorn is a lucky man, with Mariko, Fujiko, and Kiko. Any one of those women would be wonderful to end up with. But all three? Damn!
And yes, I know what happens. I'm trying not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the book. And there is no guarantee that they will follow the book. HBO didn't with GoT.
Natto is tasty but super sticky-slimey-stinkey.
Natto stinks....horribly. Its a traditional dish in Japan and a nutrient packed superfood. But even in Japan its still an acquired taste. Originally sort of a staple for peasants, I think by this point in history it would be more common for women to eat. You can eat very little and yet get all the nutrition your body needs, keeping your figure trim. It'd be like living off a diet composed mostly of stinky Met-Rx bars or something.
I'm probably one of the few gaijin who enjoyed natto (but not so much the ones from the konbini and supermarkets). I had the good fortune of receiving a pricier version -- the ones packaged in straw. The funky smell and the earthy bitter aftertaste was a *_lot_* more subdued, and it really went well with the sauce. I added a little karashi with it, as suggested by my boss at the time.
And yeah, not even all of the Japanese people I've worked with liked it. Guess they were traumatized by the "cheap" natto that sometimes came with their school lunches when they were kids.
