Smaller countries bear the brunt when bigger countries fight. Look at ww2, countries like Poland, Belgium, Hungary all were the first to get eaten and abused, regardless of which side they took - allied, communist or Austrian painter.
The only solution is an ASEAN NATO, but all ASEAN countries hate each other and have disputes - Singapore look down on Malaysia and Malaysia hates Singapore. Indonesia sees both as part of greater Indonesia. Philippines see parts of Indonesia and Malaysia as their own. Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia have massive tension due to border issues and history.
The long and short of it is both superpowers will not fight each other due to nukes, but ASEAN will become a slaughterhouse as both puppet nations in proxy wars to fight each other. The chances of ASEAN uniting is lower than the chances of the big 2 nuking each other.

Surely SE Asia is independent enough to resolve their own issues and create a future for themselves without foreign interference. There is no trust because of US meddling as part of their containment policy towards China. How about Asia develop a reciprocal North American strategy?

Philippine VP Duterte accuses Marcos of incompetence .
"The sitting leader does not know how to become president," Duterte said during a two-hour, freewheeling press conference, where she attributed problems such as inflation and food security to what she called a lack of clear government policies.
"It's not my fault that we are in this road to hell," saying Marcos ran without a plan for his administration.
"I don't ever remember him discussing what he would do in government," she said.

It is my request to all my Asian brothers and sisters don't consider US as some sort of peace maker or the guarantor of security. Wherever Usa will intervene that place will face the consequences of that intervention for generations hence make yourself strong and deal with your Asian neighbours on your own terms rather than acting in the western interest. May truth prevail and let's make Asia the centre of the world again.

The US was created upon European immigration and colonization, African slave trade, genocide of aboriginal people, and conquest and forced annexation of foreign territories.
Rampant racism against minorities, widespread drug abuse, frequent gun violence, cruel exploitation of new immigrants as cheap labor, ridiculous gap between rich and poor, looting of global wealth through addictive money printing, economic and military coercion of "allies and foes" around the world, bombing and killing of millions of civilians in foreign lands under the cover of "human rights, democracy and liberty", are some of the key features of American led so called "rule based international order".
The American tyranny of dictatorship on international order based on lie fabrication, economic coercion and military bullying will soon come to a slow end, following the outcry from the world against the atrocities happening in Gaza. A truely open, free and democratic international order based on UN Charter will be restored for all of humankind, which is exactly what the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative are looking for.

America can impose sanctions on countries that violates laws or rules etc, America needs to make sure there is order otherwise there would be chaos. America have roles and responsibilities. America has to meddle. Imagine if China will take control of the whole SCS, have you thought of what's gonna happen to the world's economy? The inflation will get worst. Gas prices are gonna go up, the ships that normally pass through the SCS will have to take longer routes and that will affect the cost of commodities.
