You simply cannot say one is better than the other and the joy is in the comparison rather than choosing a winner... One occasion, Saint-Emilion or Pomerol may shine brighter, but take the same two wines, from the same vintage, as little as a year later and the outcome can be entirely different... Vive la difference and compare these magnificent wines many times, not just once...
Lovely video! I like both regions, although Pomerol is not widely available and even more expensive than St. Emilion. For me, a good Pomerol is like drinking a creamy and rich cherry pie. Silky, elegant, yet full of length and in great balance.
In some Restaurant in Paris when you ask for a glas of water to go along with your lunch the server say "allright a Chateau La Pompe" meaning you water will come from the Seine river.
It sure is stunning! It's filmed in an 18th century building which today is Chateau Martinet. It used to be an old hunting lodge and now sits just off the main road from Libourne, nestled amongst some beautiful vineyards. Elicité we moved here 11 February and then the lockdown. We have not been out tasting much yet but plan on doing so. We are keeping safe and some places are not offering tastings. Since we plan on living here for years, we have lots of time to discover!

My proposal: as a rather international, newer wine drinker you'll prefer a full-bodied, rich and heavy St-Emillion. As an experienced quality-searcher you'll love the elegance and the fine nuances of a Pomerol.
Adrian : At some point for me it is not about the taste...which most wine lovers would never say. They would be kicked out of their wine tasting group ! Burgundy of even modest price gives an energy that makes me feel 20 years younger and 30 pounds lighter..Wow ... That is magic. No other wine i have ever had ( I am 69) has done that...and i have had plenty of attempts. I am sure you know what you are talking about - i do not know the subleties of these wines like you do. I am looking fir that elusive cosmic energy that only Burgundy provides. Bon apatite.

I see more the fact, that I several times have spent more than a 100 Bucks for a bottle of burgundy, ending up with a was-that-it? on my lips... For that money I often find a Wow! in my glass in Bordeaux. However it's a matter of personal preferences of course. And it's worth to keep trying and searching and drinking. 😀
The best way to "navigate" through the classification system is to look at the price tag of the bottle ! ! Lol ! Has always worked reliably well in Bordeaux - unlike for the wine of Bourgogne, Piemonte, Toscana and Montalcino: where it seems the more you pay the more disappointed you become !

The people that complains about the very exclusive wine's price, let it be. They aren't commodities. They are luxury items, with the price driven by exclusivity rather than "normal" economic rules. The winemakers don't even receive most of the money. It is expensive, but it gets nasty at the secondary market and the auctions, where the price sky rocket.

I must be honest, I was slightly disappointed with French wines. The imported ones I tried in South Africa was nothing special. But I contributed it to its low price tag which could only mean we just got the cheap stuff. Going to Saint-Emilion, I expected youth serum in a bottle. But it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. That being said, I’m not knocking French wines in any way. Im sure the super expensive stuff is pure heaven in a bottle. I might have just had unrealistic expectations and are too use to South African style wines. The added benefit of our wines are that you can get a really good bottle of wine at a really good price. For context, you can pay below 3EUR for a cheap wine. One of my current favorites is a wine from wine estate called Rustenberg, which costs below 10EUR (and that is considered expensive here).

To try compare different wines from different regions and put price out of the question, we suggest hosting a blind tasting of similar wines from different regions at different price points and then seeing if your preferences change. You are absolutely correct. It should NOW simply be named as Petrus, not Château Petrus nor Château Pétrus or Pétrus. Let’s go back a little in the history of this great wine ... In 1949, the owner of the Hotel Loubat in Libourne, Mrs. Edmond Loubat sold 50% of it to Jean-Pierre Moueix, who had started to market it before the start of the war, but did not have exclusive rights until 1945. It is also with him that Petrus, especially after the war, began to gain the fame that we know him today. And it was also under his leadership that Château Pétrus became Petrus (without a château and without an acute accent on the “e”). The Établissement Jean -Pierre Moueix have since bought back the shares held by the heirs of Mrs. Loubat, who died in 1961, namely those of Mr. Lignac in 1964, and those of Mrs. Lacoste-Loubat in 1969. So it is not surprised to find on the old Petrus labels (I would guess before vintage 1950???), it is the name of Château Pétrus which appears. Maybe one of the reasons for his change is, there is no actual chateau in Petrus, but simply a cellar, or at most a country house, as Christian Moueix, the president of Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, has already modestly pointed out (Petrus now belongs to his brother Jean-François). French wine prices (as with prices for wine in general) are largely driven by customer demand. Prices of Bordeaux wines for example aren't high because some Scrooge McDuck French winemaker has decided to extort the masses. It's because there has been a significant increase in demand from around the world, particularly from Asia and the US, for a good with a limited and volatile quantity. It's not always the RuLiNg eLiTe or 'privileged people' that are pulling the strings, sometimes it's just simple economics.

@@matthubner5300 I haven't tasted any but I have tried higher priced premier crus from burgundy $300 ( many premier crus sell for more) aussie dollars and then tried a borgogne rouge for $35 dollars... trying to remember Domaine de La Vougerie ( this was probably 10-15 yrs ago) ??made by an up and comer . The $300 ,dollar wine didnt do it for me. I have tried Penfold Grange... nope... I think some Aussie wines are great value for money like farr rising wines .. Saignee and Pinots.. I like even a 100% Petit verdot if it is good because I love the colour and they are promising .. Kingston Estate has one .. i like more elegant wines . hate Shiraz.. the phenolics interfere with sleep. I like great grenaches from Australia.. yet to try Bass Philip pinot due to price.. but would like to try a grand cru and compare it in good years . But I will drop my guard. You tell me some French wines that I can get here in australia that you recommend from Bordeaux, a Pomerol or St Emilion, or a Burgundy say that wont break the bank .. @@matthubner5300 One has to acknowledge that at a certain price tag, the bottles are not anymore simple "consumption goods" but also become a subject of speculation and investment. How much does it account for in the total price, I honestly don't know, but it's a non-negligible part, while for a 30$ bottle it's literally 0%. That being said, I do agree, they are not expensive because the winemakers and sellers want to sell them that much but because they simply CAN sell them that much... And there starts the discussion about why are so many people ready to pay so much for certain bottles, even though, as you implicitely recognise yourself, a factor of 10 in the price does not imply a factor of 10 in the mouth or on the nose. When people buy a bottle of fine wine or cognac, they don't just pay a beverage but a piece of luxury. That's how you can sell relatively young cognac blends full of artificial colorings and sweeteners to people who have no idea of the relative quality of what they buy, by selling them the "dream" they can finally afford, for themselves, or even better, to offer as a gift... I think it's not that awful for wines as it is for cognac, yet I can understand that it is bothering for some people that they are no more able to afford a product they loved, just because some people thousands of miles away love to buy it for what it represents (instead of what it is) but would not see the difference in a blind tasting with a wine that is ten times cheaper... Who wouldn't understand that ??

Who is claiming that a $1000 bottle of wine is 10 times better than a $100 bottle of wine? The value of a bottle is equal to what the customer is willing to pay.
French wine prices (as with prices for wine in general) are largely driven by customer demand. Prices of Bordeaux wines for example aren't high because some Scrooge McDuck French winemaker has decided to extort the masses. It's because there has been a significant increase in demand from around the world, particularly from Asia and the US, for a good with a limited and volatile quantity.
It's not always the RuLiNg eLiTe or 'privileged people' that are pulling the strings, sometimes it's just simple economics.
@@matthubner5300 the expensive wines of 1000 + are simply not worth it.. in terms of the existential experience.. I'll stick to that... i could not care whether they're paying it or not

@@matthubner5300 I haven't tasted any but I have tried higher priced premier crus from burgundy $300 ( many premier crus sell for more) aussie dollars and then tried a borgogne rouge for $35 dollars... trying to remember Domaine de La Vougerie ( this was probably 10-15 yrs ago) ??made by an up and comer . The $300 ,dollar wine didnt do it for me. I have tried Penfold Grange... nope... I think some Aussie wines are great value for money like farr rising wines .. Saignee and Pinots.. I like even a 100% Petit verdot if it is good because I love the colour and they are promising .. Kingston Estate has one .. i like more elegant wines . hate Shiraz.. the phenolics interfere with sleep. I like great grenaches from Australia.. yet to try Bass Philip pinot due to price.. but would like to try a grand cru and compare it in good years
. But I will drop my guard. You tell me some French wines that I can get here in australia that you recommend from Bordeaux, a Pomerol or St Emilion, or a Burgundy say that wont break the bank .. I am still to find a brilliant fresh juicy French Beaujolais .. when i look in say Dan Murphy or on line they are often 2017 or earlier vintages.. i steer clear .. maybe they are overrated ..Now I am trying some more way out wines from Whitfield in NE Victoria .. I live in xxxxxxxxxx Vic... Dalzotto are funky wines, different and funnily enough the only wine label that attracts probably because of funkiness is not garrish its elegant or pretty .. i never buy garishly labelled wines.. its only Dalzotto labels.. They are local wines 60klms from me in the country . I havent even read the reviews yet.. just trying a few.. i used to buy french pinots from.a specialist importer who used to be at Essendon Airport here near Melbourne.. he is probably gone now ( dead).
@@matthubner5300 One has to acknowledge that at a certain price tag, the bottles are not anymore simple "consumption goods" but also become a subject of speculation and investment. How much does it account for in the total price, I honestly don't know, but it's a non-negligible part, while for a 30$ bottle it's literally 0%.
That being said, I do agree, they are not expensive because the winemakers and sellers want to sell them that much but because they simply CAN sell them that much...
And there starts the discussion about why are so many people ready to pay so much for certain bottles, even though, as you implicitely recognise yourself, a factor of 10 in the price does not imply a factor of 10 in the mouth or on the nose. When people buy a bottle of fine wine or cognac, they don't just pay a beverage but a piece of luxury. That's how you can sell relatively young cognac blends full of artificial colorings and sweeteners to people who have no idea of the relative quality of what they buy, by selling them the "dream" they can finally afford, for themselves, or even better, to offer as a gift... I think it's not that awful for wines as it is for cognac, yet I can understand that it is bothering for some people that they are no more able to afford a product they loved, just because some people thousands of miles away love to buy it for what it represents (instead of what it is) but would not see the difference in a blind tasting with a wine that is ten times cheaper... Who wouldn't understand that ??
