In an interview, Billy stated that there were many bass players nowadyas who like to solo and can solo their asses off, but that they couldn't groove or play with a band. They learn the frosting, but not the cake.
Man, this whole album rocks. It's more accessible than their later stuff (this is off their debut), but the grooving is super tight. good work gentlemen. really digging this video too.
Not sick at all - the mofo is dead and has been laying it down in Valhalla for the last 10,000 years in glorious fashion.....😂 what we see here is just a minor reflection from the polished shields in the drinking hall! ❤❤❤
John Novello, along with Chick Corea and the chief engineer at the Rhodes factory, were the select three who each received a prototype model of the midi Mark V to play, experiment on, and then make recommendations back to the company on improvements. Only about 3,000 Mark Vs were made before the company ceased operations in 1984, and these were the only three midi versions. I don't know what John Novello did with his, but Chick Corea still actively uses his model on tour and in the studio.
Whats about his tone - it's very easy to get. Take simple bass with two neck pickups, pr just switch bridge one off on another type of. Add some compressing, and here it is! Even on Yamaha RBX-170 it is could be done. PS: very good variation of such sound is when distortion is activated) Boss ODB-3 for example (I use)
You'd be surprised...there are many bass players out there who treat bass as a four-string guitar. They have no idea it's a rhythm instrument, how to keep time or work with the drummer, they just riff.
Urgent: Please somebody can help me to find more bands like that but.... with additional trumpet. More specifically jazz fusion bands, very dynamic and intense like this.. in any genere the drums and the bass are obvious, in Niacin we have additional Hammond Organs but I miss trumpet... not saxophone, the saxophone is too commercial and too clean, the trumpet is dirty.. I am sure there are many bands out there, I heard some even live jazz fusion bands with Hammond b3 and trumpet... Thanks in advance
A mistake many make...I've posted that people should listen to Niacin ALL OVER this place! May they find truth. But seriously, I doubt ANY bassist could shred all day and not groove...it's just a natural thing. That's like a shred guitarist that never plays chords...Oh yeah, oops, Malmsteen does that HAHA, jus kiddin!
Got to see NIACIN at Martyr's in Chicago..... many years ago. Truly an amazing show.

This band is amazing. I'm a drummer and as much as I appreciate Dennis Chambers, I gotta say that Bill Sheehan is my favorite member.

Great stuff John. Still wish I had tapes of the old CJ Brie Insanity songs. You need to record D minor jam again.
Was just talking to a friend about D Min Jam!
Do it! It was one of your great songs. Not many people around that still remember it. You need to give them a chance to enjoy it.

I agree that on these RUclips recordings his bass tone is kind of muddy...sounds good on the CD's tho.

Yeah! and the rest of us who teach drummers we have to work together and they should keep eye contact with us :)
What a combo!Where the f... is my lower jaw?

LOL but the groove is natural...I hate using the word sometimes as it's overused but...it's natural...Every bassist has groove...don't they?
Hahahahahuaehaeu

Dennis Chambers is fuckin awesome. John Novello is very creative, but Billy Sheehan's bass sound is awful
