I think the thing holding Hewg together was the chains. That is why when they break so does he. That binding was so big a part of who he was that he lost it all once he was freed. He was utterly free, not bound in body or mind. But the consequence of that is he lost all he had during his time being bound.
I think Roderika understands that which is why she is heartbroken and why she doesn't take him away from there. He may be free but without the Roundtable he has nothing. Not even her, his adopted daughter. So she leaves him there as a final act of familial devotion.

It’s not friendship, it’s far more than that
As Hewg stated himself after Roderika progresses in Spirit Tuning, he sometimes views her as a daughter, and given the way Roderika stays by his side no matter what, it’s likely she ends up viewing him as a father of sorts
The two are inseparable, and it breaks my heart to see them at the end

It is truly a feat of determination for him to still smith, despite everything around and inside him crumbling. I've seen people make links to the tradition of "a captain goes down with the ship," and I find that perfectly fitting for Hewg. Devoting everything he has to save the world, or die trying. I hope he has can rest easy now.

To support the Leonine misbegotten, in the consecrated snowfield there is another misbegotten like Leonine, but wielding the Golden Order Blade. there's a theory that some misbegottens are loyal to the erdtree (they ultimately come from it b/c the erdtree originated as the crucible) and were sent to the haligtree on a crusade by the golden order. that's why haligtree town is all fucked up by them and everyone's dead, and why that guy has the sword.
they were down for this because the haligtree is explicitly separate from the erdtree, and although the misbegotten are downtrodden and prejudiced against, they are ultimately loyal to the erdtree.

@@shoopah92 That make so much sense! If so Radagon probably wanted to indirectly stunt Miquella’s new age so he could stay Elden Lord. It’s a complicated theory bc it’s said Radagon loved Miquella the most out of all his children but idk if that love was based on Miquella’s attractive nature or actually loving his son. To me the spirit tuner Hewg mentions is Miquella... as Miquella is the previous owner of the spirit calling bell and the lone wolves summon (as there are statues in the Haligtree of Miquella and the wolves), and Ranni mentions the wolves spirits belonged to Torrent's previous owner.... which could very well be Miquella, especially after the DLC's teaser image. Additionally, Miquella seems to have been a really loved figure in the Lands Between, which also explains why Hewg remembers him so fondly.

I do wonder if Hewg died long ago, but is bound to reality by the same magic that made the Roundtable Hold. When you visit the real roundtable in Leyndell, you find Hewgs hammer. And when Leyndell is covered in burning ash, the Illusory roundtable starts burning too. Hewg loses himself as the Roundtable burns. I took that to mean the magic is wearing off, and soon both the illusory Roundtable and Hewg will vanish altogether.

Great video! I think Hewg’s story lends more credence to the idea that Marika was somehow tied to the night of the black knives. I often wonder if she ultimately regretted sealing away destined death and wanted you to bring it back to begin a new age.
Would love to see a video on Diallos. When I actually did his questline, I found it to be a very moving story, and I rarely see anyone even mention the guy. It’s honestly easy to forget he’s even in the game sometimes.

    • @miss_chalice
      @miss_chalice  Год назад +7

Thank you! And yes, I personally believe Marika found herself in too deep, too quickly. Shattering the Elden Ring was definitely her out. She is, by far, not innocent, but just like the gods and humanity alike, she is imperfect.
And thank you also for the suggestion! You are right, I think I would like to cover his story as well some time!

    • @anonfinally1692
      @anonfinally1692 8 месяцев назад

I think when Marika was having a hard time winning against Caria/Liurnia she got desperate and thought the solution was just to destroy her enemy from within.
So she devised a plan, but this plan is kind of blasphemous as it involves fragmenting yourself like how I believe Malenia fragmented herself with Millicent as her "pride". Removing this pride because she was about to face Radahn, said to be one of the most powerful demigods, so she will not hesitate to use unprideful powers (such as unleashing the full power of Scarlet Rot) just to win.
Marika needs someone to infiltrate the Carian royalty but this task cannot be given to anyone else. That's why she divided herself to birth Radagon, the side of herself that values the Golden Order the most. This is an insurance that whatever Radagon does he will never betray the Golden Order.
But the plan backfired because now we have a Marika that has less love for the Golden Order and a Radagon, a sleeper agent, who loves it above anything else even more than his family with Rennala explaining how he left them easily.
Marika now longing to end her wars of unifying everything under the rule of the Erdtree but this does not exactly mean under the Golden Order. I think it is easier to replace than the Erdtree. Now she might have no direct control on Radagon so she only knows he serves the Golden Order but she doesn't know if he still serves her.
So she recalls Radagon back to forge herself whole again. But this could've been a trigger. Ranni now is under the control of the Two Fingers, her father left and her mother is turning insane. Her family shattered and her fate sealed to walk the same path as the woman who destroyed her life.
So Ranni, along with her brothers Rykard and Radahn devised a plan to exact revenge to upend everything from the Fingers to the Erdtree and everything in between. Rykard helps Ranni to plan the Night of Black Knives and Radahn halted the stars to pause Ranni's fate of being a God until she finishes their revenge unbeknownst to him that Ranni's fate was actually finding the Fingerslaying Blade all along.
But Malenia happened and Radahn's mind fades because of the Scarlet Rot. That's why I feel like the order of killing Radahn hurts Ranni but it is a kind of mercy and a necessary evil.
Now, first meeting Ranni she uses sleep, an ability more associated with Miquella. Also she knows Torrent and the steed's former master. What if Miquella and Ranni coerced Marika to disband the Golden Order (Miquella having the power to influence others or charm them also would want to destabilize the Erdtree for his Haligtree)?
Marika now convinced, tricks Maliketh and helps Ranni steal a fragment of Destined Death. Maybe she had to trick Maliketh instead of asking for it directly because Maliketh might suspect something that could be tied directly to Marika or maybe Maliketh will not approve of the plan.
The Night of the Black Knives happen, and every piece is in place. Except, Ranni betrays Marika. Instead of granting Godwyn true death she tried to circumvent "death of soul and body" by killing Godwyn's soul, dealing a solid blow not only to the Golden Order but turning Marika's Golden Child and firstborn into something horrible. Then she offers her body to be released from the clutches of the Fingers. Two birds.
      This could explain why:
      - Marika went berserk and shattered the Elden Ring
      - Why Radagon was trying to mend it (he was loyal until the end)
      - Why Black Knife Assassins was in Caria's estate near the end of Ranni's questline. They were close to Marika and could have been sent by her to hunt Ranni down but when they arrived at the estate only Blaidd and Iji was there and Ranni's plan was already in full bloom.
      - Why Radahn halted the stars even though he is a fan of Godfrey
So sorry for the long text and lack of good formatting. I am very excited for the DLC and I believe Messmer = Miquella. Thank you for reading.

Love this story in Weeping! One aspect of the current age we exist in Elden Ring is that death is gone, yet everything “human” has practically withered to nothing. While knights still hold some power, commoners and alike are living zombies. I think these Misbegotten have overtaken the Fort because of this, they being part of the original Crucible gives them some edge over their former masters. They take the opportunity to finally rise up, fittingly taking hold of the Revenger’s Grafted Blade.

I need to thank you for this video. My grandparents suffered from dementia, so the story of Hewg always hit me hard personally. So you doing the story justice, with the gravity and grace that it deserves, is beautiful, almost sublime in its own way. Thank you.

In technical gamplay, Hewg can't never leave roundtable as a blacksmith because we the player might still need to upgrade our weapon
and I love how Fromsoft masking that into an emotional story

Not really in sekiro when the sculptor leaves sekiro upgrades his prosthetic arm himself. So they could have done the same here with tarnished smithing their own weapons. I don't think they're masking him staying as it just fits his lore and character

Chalice, that Amygdala displate is tasteful as hell.
Also, I've been looking forward to this. I play these games in a generally detached manner; it's a From Soft game and Miyazaki rarely gives us a "good" ending, but Hewg's story is so moving I actually got misty when he acknowledged my Tarnished as a "Lord" upon making the god-slaying weapon and was moved to some serious sadness when he loses his memory upon the releasing of Destined Death.
Thank you for honoring him. :)
Edit: YES! You covered the Misbegotten's code name. Love that deep dive.
Edit 2: Hewg somewhat reminds me of Gehrman in a way. Imprisoned in a realm by a god-like being to serve a purpose beyond themselves in service to... us. Makes me really feel for him.
Edit 3: Very nice touch to use the Godslayer's Greatsword as your weapon, Chalice.

I was hoping someone would cover him, I always felt so bad for Hewg but never fully understood what was going on with him.
Edit: yeah I was not disappointed, this made me think of so many other possibilities, like does this mean we literally just become the endgame boss, protecting our new world order from the next one? And, what is the significance of a leonine misbegotten holding Radagon's Golden Order Sword in the cave of the forlorn? Was it forlorn because once radagon joined with Marika they no longer had a loving father, but a mother who hated them and enslaved their race?

Awesome video! I agree with the general theory of Marika wanting us to free her from her enslaved existence, us being the last desperate attempt after having tried other ways, including family. Ultimate motives could be something else but that particular strand, it really is the feeling I get each time I play. And Hewg in turn is such a tragic mirror, as he is enslaved at the cost of this plot.
I really feel like Roderika & Hewg and the player character's relationship with them is the closest the story comes to exploring emotionality. It is otherwise quite bleak, with a focus on deeds and power and enduring.

I'd presumed the character Hewg references as the spirit tuner of his past was Renna, since the doll Ranni possesses was formed in her likeness, thus the connection of the eyes, as well as her referencing the former owner of the spirit tuner bell & torrent to be her former master; Renna, perhaps I've misremembered something, or not noticed some invalidating evidence, but as far as I'm aware this connection is the one that makes the most sense

Well, I had never thought really hard about the lore you present in your vids, so I never realized just how insanely good your lore thoughts are. I know my being stoned probably detracts from that somewhat, but my mind is currently melting from how detailed and comprehensible you are when talking about really complicated cultures and politics and history.

I get so damn sad every time i get to the end of Elden Ring. Last play through i didnt even talk to him, didn't want to hear those heart wrenching lines again. All the smiths are memorable but he was truly legendary. Also I agree with the theory of him fading as the round table burns. He even sounds as if speaking and swinging the hammer are almost too much for him, mind gone and body worn. Yet still he swings his hammer, until the end, for the promise he made, and for his Lord.
