Hey, Original Tribe! Comment on this video to enter to win this scrimshawed knife! We will do a drawing on February 15, 2022. All you have to do is be subscribed to the channel (making you an Original Tribe member!) and comment on this video. Which design do you want to put on the other side of the knife? One of the provided designs or one of your own creation? ....An ORIGINAL design? ;-)
Hey Kelly, yea that little 🐞 has gotten a lot of attention! I’m just glad there was only one, years past the windows would be covered with them 😝Good luck on the drawing.
Thank you for the great videos! I tend to collect hobbies, and one of the great things our local living history museum did a few summers back was to have activity nights for adults to try different crafts, like dipping taper candles and scrimshaw and rope making, etc. Your channel reminds me of that - a pleasant assortment of fascinating topics and skills.
Thank you ronwoch, we have a lot of fun putting these videos out, and we’re happy that you have found us. Your in the running for the drawing, good luck!
@@StockmanOriginal Mr Brian I greatly appreciate the opportunity to win but I have been blessed with a wonderful scrimshaw set that I can't seem to get off my butt and use. I hope this set of yours ends up in the hands of someone who will put it to use.

Cool! I've never done scrimshaw, but I have recently followed you, and enjoy seeing your work! I work with horn, making drinking horns, so I'm onboard, Captain! Scrim on!
Because of your channel I picked up one of these kits a couple of months ago off ebay. My kit came with a bottle of dried up ink too. Been enjoying your videos now for several month now, keep it up and thanks.
I just came across your channel recently (the bass bark backpack was randomly recommended to me, thanks YT!) and ive really been impressed by your content and informative down-to-earth presentation style. Ive been on youtube for a long time and I can tell your channel will grow exponentially soon if you keep posting videos of this quality! I dont want to imagine what the factory conditions/pay are for the Chinese workers but I digress. Thank you for offering this giveaway to your viewers.
Thanks, sergeantbigmac! Max here. Would you say the thumbnails on our channel page in general are eye-catching or should I be trying a lot harder? I welcome honest feedback, as the point is to improve. Thumbnails and titles are really hard...

Welcome to our tribe Clara, we are so happy to have you with us.It’s cool that you are giving scrimshaw a try, it’s a very fun art form. I actually was mulling over getting a set of those scrimshaw kits, keeping one and sending the other to my nephew for his birthday. Since you said it's a good starter set, I'll see about making that investment ( as well as investing in some sharpened tapestry needles I usually procure at Walmart or Kroger outlets.). Cheers to you Gents, keep up the fantastic work.
It's a fascinating craft and a joy to see a master work. If I were to use pig bones for scrimshaw what would be the procedure I'd need to put it through to prep it for scrimshaw? I've been getting my pork in larger pieces such as whole legs and I'd love to use the bones for carving or scrimshaw.
Al Dente, thank you very much! Scrimshaw is a lot of fun and you don’t need to do much to prep the bone. You just would scrape it and sand it and then steel wool it. You might want to ink it and steel wool it off to make sure it is good. The leg bones would make great containers or even priming horns.

The reason why I subscribed in the first place was because I had the urge to do just this ... hasn't happened yet but Brian's a good motivator. A good use for one of the gramophone needles I've been hoarding, perhaps! It would be very tempting to ransack Rockwell Kent's illustrations for Moby-Dick for something to go on the other side of this knife, but whoever wins it is going to be under some pressure to live up to Brian's scrimshaw. Thanks for the video: much appreciated.

Thank you for making these videos-I am an art teacher and I teach drawing-I cant wait to try this! Is it the depth of the line that creates the difference in the values from light to dark or the width of the line or both?
Hello Laura, we’re so happy you found our channel!! Scrimshaw is a lot of fun, l’m glad you’re going to give it a go. You can outline your subject lightly at first and then go over areas that you want bolder, but crosshatching is what you want for shading. Although stippling is an other good shading technique. Please let us know how you do with it. And it seems you are a blacksmith so making your own tools should be easy.👍🏼
Hey Brian and Max, outstanding idea! I'd probably use the template, maybe the Live Free Or Die. I might have my oldest daughter draw something for it as well. She's much better with pen and paper than I.

H Vincent thank you, and you are definitely in the game. I keep hearing about this ladybug and feel fortunate that there was only a few in the shop. In years past the windows would be covered with them.👍🏼
Been looking to find a way to try scrimshaw without overcommitting. I like the idea of starting with sewing needles. Do you have any experience or ideas for working on glass by chance?
Hey. Chuck, your just in time! We are going to have the drawing tomorrow ( February 15)- good luck to you sir. Glass, well l have never done acid etching on glass before, but l’m sure that would work. It just requires equipment though. I have had some fun grinding glass with a rotary tool and small grinder bits. You can place a picture under the glass and use the little grinders like a pen. By the way, I love knapping!
@@StockmanOriginal Yeah I have a bit of a knapping obsession, to say the least... Wanted to enhance some of my tools and knife handles with some scrimshaw and carving, which led me to find your channel a few weeks back. Glad I did! TY!
"It's got two sides, so I can do one side..." and I can make a mess of the other? BTW the pocket knife is what is referred to as a Trapper style, it's too bad it wasn't the similar three blade style called the Stockman. The Trapper has a clip point blade and the other is called a Spey blade, the original purpose was to turn a bull into a steer or a stallion into a gelding. The Stockman style has an additional sheep'sfoot blade, which is quite useful for whittling as it has a straight cutting edge.
Hey Leigh Christopherson, you would do fine on the other side. Wouldn’t it have been fun if it were a stockman knife, but it is a pretty nice knife. I’m just not a very big fan of stainless steel except when cutting strawberries, apples, and tomatoes. Good luck on the draw.
Once again Brian, amazing work and great video 👌 I have some old jewellers files, next time I have some spare time I'm going to have a go at making my own Scrim tool☺️ and dig through my box of bits, I think I have a cow horn somewhere! You have really inspired me to want to have a go at scrimshaw 😊 if it turns out well I might make it into a powder or maybe drinking horn😉 anyway keep up the amazing work and thoroughly entertaining videos ✌️♥️
Hello Dave, so good to hear from you!! I would love to see the finished horn. I like the triangular file best for a scrim tool . These videos have been a lot of fun to do and this last one, especially. Hey maybe you’ll win ( but I recommend the file) . Good luck on the draw!
And yes, it's a trapper model. That brand is probably the best value for cheap pocket knives. I'm old school my everyday knife is a Case carbon steel trapper model lol
Awesome! This would be one heck of a gift from a master!! Plus it’s the day after retrograde so everything ought to be calmed down enough just to pull my name hahaha. Well it definitely would be cool anyways haha. Thanks guys

I don’t know why but RUclips is not playing nice, your last three comments go for about a line and then go…. So I go where I am supposed to in order to see the rest and I get “ comments not found “😵💫
Brian - Another great video. I wanted to comment but, since you are already working on that whale’s tooth knife for me, do not include me in the drawing. I wanted to comment though that my understanding is that traditionally a sailor would use a good #12 sailmaker’s needle. They hold an edge and the triangular design (for punching through the canvas without cutting the fibers) made the perfect scratching tool while doing ditty work during those off-watch hours. See you soon!
Hey Mike, that’s good info. I’m sure those needles were fairly available aboard a ship. I’ve seen some stipple work and they seem to always have triangular holes. Let’s get the gang together Friday?
And the winner is... ruclips.net/video/SDO9kKT3vHg/видео.html

Hey Dan, thanks for checking us out. Yes, you can buff it to a shine after for sure. I use a piece of leather with polishing compound.
Also, good luck on the draw!
Where can I find the drink? Made my mouth water LOL....Already enjoying your videos..
Thanks Hap, we have had a lot of fun putting them together and lots of ideas for more videos to come!
Looks like a nice beginners set, now have more value for the Brian scrimshaw whale ☺️
Garou Diaz hello, yes-not a bad kit for getting someone started, maybe you. Good luck on the draw.
@@StockmanOriginal thank you 🙏 we'll see how it goes in the raffle 🍀
Great vid as always guys, count me in for the draw! Although you did get upstaged by that lil ladybird at several points haha! If I won I think I'd add a pair of swallows on the reverse side. Keep well and stay blessed guys.
H Vincent thank you, and you are definitely in the game. I keep hearing about this ladybug and feel fortunate that there was only a few in the shop. In years past the windows would be covered with them.👍🏼
Oh, and good luck on the draw!
Glad I did! TY!
So happy to have you in our tribe!
Thanks for the great video and inspiration. Loved it
Thanks Tim, hope it helps.
Very nice work! Thank you!
Hey Matt, thanks for checking us out.
Thank you for all the inspiration. Tribe 🌲
Thank you Kurt, and good luck on the draw!
Where can we get Indian ink? Extra bone knives? Love the video!
you can order ink off amazon, or buy it at a local art supply, An office supply ought to be able to get it for you if they don't have it in stock.
India ink can be found at any arts and crafts store I’m sure, and bones are easy to find in pet stores.👍🏼

Dave, my phone or RUclips aren’t letting me see all your comments. I’m on messenger if you want to try that. Thanks.
Very nice presentation,i like rough rider knives i have 30
Hey Richard barefoot, thanks. With a little luck it might be 31, good luck on the draw!
Sweet! Awesome work
Thank you Scott, good luck on the draw.
There should be another February 15th coming around. Just add me on to the next ‘un!
We will probably do something like this again before next February.👍🏼
Great videos very interesting
Norbert Hall, thank you, we had a lot of fun doing it. Welcome to the tribe and good luck on the draw.
And yes, it's a trapper model. That brand is probably the best value for cheap pocket knives. I'm old school my everyday knife is a Case carbon steel trapper model lol
Yes, it’s labeled as a trapper, I just forgot to mention it, one of our tribe pointed out it should have been a Stockman!
@@StockmanOriginal yes, it should have been a Stockman lol!
Awesome! This would be one heck of a gift from a master!! Plus it’s the day after retrograde so everything ought to be calmed down enough just to pull my name hahaha. Well it definitely would be cool anyways haha. Thanks guys
beeferbaron, thanks for playing along with us! You never know, it could be your lucky day. Thank you for being part of our tribe, and good luck on the draw.
Hard to beat Max and Brian for $20, You both take care.
Thank you Mark, good luck on the draw.
Love the whale but I would put a bear on the other side
I love these videos I'm scrimming some black bear bone using Ojibwa designs with the old geometric language pictographs like our form of ruids based in geometry astrology and geography
joshua swagger, thank you so much. I have worked with bear bones, good medicine. What do you make out of them? Good luck on the draw.
Joshua, my phone won’t show me your last comment!😖 Technology has its limits, but I would like to know what you said.
I don’t know why but RUclips is not playing nice, your last three comments go for about a line and then go…. So I go where I am supposed to in order to see the rest and I get “ comments not found “😵💫
thank you....looks like the thieves in LA didn't get your kit...LOL
Hey Sheepdog9, ya this one got through. Hey good luck on the draw.
@@StockmanOriginal That would be great. I am checking with the others.
How do you put the ink inside thanks
Hello cornelississelaar! Thank you for watching our channel. I usually aply the ink with a little paint brush and rub it in with my finger.
