  • In this video I discuss our recent vinyl road trip to Michigan! I show a couple of grails found at the Ann Arbor record show as well as do an overview of a few of the rad stores we visited in Iowa and Michigan! I have a few other vinyl road trip videos on my channel if you are interested!
Flat, Black, & Circular in Lansing, Michigan is definitely one of the best record stores I've ever visited! Props to them!
Do you take vinyl road trips to seek out used records? It's my favorite activity!
I'm Hanna, and thanks for watching! Like my video? Please subscribe and give me a thumbs up!

That US release of the Clash first album originally came with a vinyl 45 of "Groovy Times" bw "Gates of The West. The LP wasn't released in the US until Fall '79 at a below average price just a few months ahead of London Calling. "Give 'em Enough Rope" was their first US release.

Hi Hanna - another great video! I don't take vinyl road trips but I do try to check out the local shops when traveling. I found this antique/thrift store in a small town in Minnesota that has some great records! We'll be traveling to the UK in October and I've started my list of vinyl to seek out in Scotland and England. I"ve been watching your videos and taking note of bands from the UK so that my overseas purchases have a connection to the location. Thanks for the great leads!!

So glad you were able to come to my home state! We are blessed here with many shows and record stores (over 30 in the Detroit area alone). I do like to go to record stores when I travel. So far, I have been to stores in Illinois (Chicago area), Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. Hoping to get to a store this weekend in New York City. I also hope to plan a trip to the Austin record show in the near future. I was in Omaha this past October and wasn’t able to make it out - we were there to watch MIchigan play Nebraska. Like the Psychedelic Furs choice - I am going to see them Sunday night! I also think Sun King is one of my favorite “First Songs” . Sorry for the long message - enjoy your videos and am jealous of your collection!

    Another great video!
What a cool road trip. We were up that way ourselves recently. Through Iowa to Wisconsin and a bike trail there. No record stores, unfortunately.
I loved the camera panning of the record store walls and flipping through the bins.
You paused on some great titles. A handful you flipped through caught my eye. I wouldn't be surprised if they were already in your collection.
Shriekback - Oil & Gold. Ex-Gang of Four and ex-XTC with the marvelous Lu Edmunds.
That Petrol Emotion - End Of The Millenium Psychosis Blues. The O'Neill brothers were in The Undertones and wrote all the music for them. Not their best work though.
The The - Infected. After Soul Mining and before Johnny Marr joined but still good.
Lou Reed - Street Hassle. Not a great album but worth it for the epic title track. One of the best things he ever recorded.
The Feelies - Only Life. One of my favorite bands. Not their best but still great.
The stuff you did buy is equally great.
Never liked the US track listing for The Clash. Great to see you found the UK edition.
    The Skids! Nice!
Radio Birdman! I think the Sire edition includes Aloha Steve & Danno! Classic!
Dexy's - Too-Ry-Ay - I love that album. All three of their first-run albums are classics. Each with its own style and sound.
Coincidentally Kevin Rowland was never happy with the album and Too-Ry-Ay as it was meant to sound is about to be released. I am not sure how they could improve on it.
Patti Smith - Easter. To paraphrase the great Lester Bangs "Horses changed my life, Easter is just a great album" So true! Have I told you (more than 50 times) that I saw her in a concert in Tulsa last May? She played 2 Easter tracks.
Once again I have found too much to comment on! Thanks again for a great video, congratulations on the great finds.
    And love The Who t-shirt!

Hi Richard, i also took note of Lou's Street Hassle. Reed and Bowie's output of brilliant albums through the 70s are unmatched as solo artists. Another superb example of Reed's music genius from that album is Real Good Time Together. Along with his 70s masterpieces i also loved his The Bells and Growing Up In Public albums. Such great songs on those.

@@dannymiles6503 I found my way to Lou Reed through The Velvet Underground, and love Real Good Time Together on 1969: Live. In his solo output, there are so many great songs, even into the 80s. I have a soft spot for Romeo Had Juliette and even New Sensations. I will give the Bells another listen, I think I tried it once and it didn't click.

@@RPS67 Yes Richard, the old Velvets original, but geez Lou took that song to a whole new level on Street Hassle. Its a brilliant song and its worshipped by many musicians, artists. As Bowie once said, "Lou was a master, he provided the street, the setting, for all us others to create our songs. I do love The Bells, as it came out at the most experimental time in my life way back in the fast lane. Its virtually co written with longtime Springsteen bandmate Nils Lofgren. Stupid Man, Disco Mystic, I Wanna Boogie With You, All Through The Night, City Lights, Families and the title track are superb.
Yes, i agree New Sensations has some great songs. High In The City, My Friend George, The Last Shot, New Sensations itself too. Try his album Growing Up In Public too if you like, brilliant songs on there like How Do You Speak To An Angel, So Alone, Think It Over, Standing On Ceremony, etc etc. Thankyou for your interest Richard. Im sure you know about the Reed /Bowie incident, where Lou bopped David in a Chelsea restaurant. Lou Reed, the only man who could bop Bowie and get away with it, incredible. Thanks a lot Richard.

Some of those records on the Sire label, I had Promo copies of in the late 70's. I no longer have them, can't believe how much Some of those sell for today. I remember going over a Warner brothers rep house and paying $1.00 each for unplay promos, I had all the Sire stuff which at that time not to many people in Hawaii that I knew listened to them.

Early on you leafed past 'The The - Infected' - (imo) that's a cracking album, very honest lyrically and a reflection of the time...'Heartland' being the stand out - underrated. As is Roy Wood, scary talented and great songwriter - 'Shazam' now on my list...as is 'Subhumans' stuff. John McGeoch (you know him) is getting some well deserved, way too late plaudits for his inspiring guitar work - bit of a random link, though he does appear on 'Once upon a time - The Singles'. Thanks for posting this, certainly stimulates discussion.

I thought there were some great Aussie bands at the time. Grace Jones, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Dexy's Midnight Runners are gems from the 80's that still play on radio in Brazil. I confess that I feel jealous when watching these American midwest record stores on video and we Brazilians live hard times in Brazil that is in economic crisis, corruption, with a president who hates culture and wanna become a dictator. Hi Hanna and greetings from Ann Arbor, MI! I am a relatively new subscriber to your channel, but have really been enjoying it a ton. I initially checked out a few of your videos, but then got so excited when I saw one from my town. What a small world! There are a few different record shows in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area throughout the year, but the Monster CD Show is my favorite and I NEVER miss it even if I only have $30 to spend lol. It happens 4 times a year (January, April, June and October or November), and the next one is actually this weekend (4/16/23). I am pumped! As you found out there is always great stuff to be had, and I also typically find a grail record at every show. I watched the entire video and didn’t see myself (yet lol), but recognized all the dealers and regulars that I have gotten to know over the past 6 years or so. I probably ran into yourself and Chris, and we probably fought over a shoegaze record or 2 ha ha. I am so happy for you that you found that Throwing Muses record, what a great score! I think one of my favorite records that I scored there was Olivelawn - Sap. I walked up to the table with a Texas Is The Reason shirt on and the dealer had the same shirt on. Cool stuff! He sold it to me for $10 and it is pretty minty, as I was the only one that even knew who they were that day. Lucky me! I am really glad that you got to check out Encore Records and Underground Sounds while you were in town as well. I agree Underground is definitely known for their new record selection, but I have also found some used grail records (Like a used copy of Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, the pressing that you show in your “Best Of 90’s” video. I about had a panic attack when I found that in the stack of recent arrivals section lol. Also some really nice pressings of Dinosaur Jr. - Hand It Over and You’re Living All Over Me, and some Sunny Day Real Estate.) there throughout the years. I really dig going there for Record Store Day specifically though, as I have never walked away without everything on my list. This year it looks like I will be picking up Klark Kent, The Temptations, The Cranberries, Joan Jett and Raphael Saadiq. What are you and Chris pumped about for RSD?
I also really wanted to say thank you for turning me on to music I hadn’t heard yet. Like right now I am listening to The Sound - From The Lion’s Mouth. I don’t know how I missed this band as I love 80’s music, I love Joy Division and I love Echo & The Bunnymen. Also thank you for Sad Lovers & Giants, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Chameleons, Gang Of Four and Chelsea. Thank you again Hanna, and please keep inspiring me musically and creating great content!

I met him in April and we worked out a deal. You can imagine my surprise when I saw your video This morning and 3 of the first 4 crates you showed at the beginning were All my stuff that Rod just bought.
Then as you went on, turns out you bought my Romeo Void and Throwing Muses. And to Top it all off, both of your Grails, UK Clash and Radio Birdman were also Mine. I was so excited to know that you ended up w some of my best Lps. I'm one of your Biggest Fans so this just made my whole year!! Enjoy the Records and next time your coming to AA, please give a heads up, I'd love to meet you and Chris.

Whoa, Mark! So, I picked up some records that used to be yours! That's awesome! However, I must also ask, why did you get rid of such INCREDIBLE albums?! I'm so excited about all of these. Yes, those 2 grails...ACE! Never thought I'd come across that Radio Birdman. It was like there was a light shining down from above right on it...and with the glorious promo sticker and everything! Yes, if we ever get up to Ann Arbor area again, will try to let you know! Probably won't be for a long while though, I'd imagine. We didn't enjoy the drive too much...mainly that south Chicago area. Yikes.
And if you've been hanging out and watching vinyl videos in this community and commenting and such, you are definitely part of the VC! Thank you for these solid records! You really took excellent care of them! :-)

I had to do a purge and I know these records were valuable and I didn't listen to them. I know you like punk music, I'm not a big fan, but I had these albums from back in the day when I was a Mgr at Musicland in the late 70s into the 80s. You and I are more on the same page w late 80's, early 90s power pop and shoegaze.
I try to take care of all my stuff.
I have some more that I'll save for your next visit to AA..hopefully we can Make a deal. Don't wait too long to come back. Love to have you over and show you lps that I think you'll be interested in.

For a punk record and this is quite an obscure one, I recommend Crisis - Hymns of Faith, their debut from 1980. They’re a UK band from that initial British punk movement. I found a nice reissue when I was in London 4 years ago. Really excellent punk rock music. 👌🏻😊

Glad to see you got to a show. Glad though you are still at it and able to move ahead. Saw Romeo Void in 85, they were on top at that time. Did not know Grace did She Lost Control/Private Life, cool. Lynn Goldsmith took that Patti album cover photo,....she was fixing a bobby pin in her hair. Look up Lynn and website to see some cool videos with Patti and her.
The CBGB was a counter to Max's Kansas City album.....the album is not as much fun as you would think. But just good to have because of the name.
Hate to be downer here.....but records, are just way way way too expensive and the method of buying is so restricted now. That is my view.
So disappointed in seeing the prices, and it is universal.
I am glad I bought when I did, and only buy what I really want now. Maybe I am old fashioned, but I do not understand the color vinyl purchases and multiple styles scam they do now.
Vinyl sellers and Labels are out pricing the market, and the way the economy is going, they are going to force CD's to come back as a cheaper media. cheers! stay cool!
P.S. I still prefer the WEST COAST record stores.....

STEVE! Greetings! Great to hear from you. Pretty jealous you got to see Romeo Void in '85. Bet they were on fire at the show! I'll definitely look up Lynn Goldsmith to see those videos of her and Patti. Thanks for that!
Yeah, inflation right now is a huge downer. Since I'm way deep in the hobby at the moment, I can't give up the buying for long. I always get right back to it because of my thirst for the music. I only wish I had started collecting many years ago instead of waiting until early 2018 to get into vinyl more seriously. I'm still buying CDs though...more affordable in many cases.
No, I don't fall for the colored variant scam and special edition pressings of the same album, etc. Pretty ridiculous.
I'm with you on the preference for west coast stores...I had my BEST digs in Washington state and Oregon. Will always remember the titles I found there. Cheers! Hope all is well!

Glad to see that you've found Radio Birdman. Great band, great record. Although I adore The Pretenders, Grace took their 'Private Life' to the next level. At first I couldn't get into David Sylvian. I regarded his music as boring. But a friend of mine suggested that I should make some more effort, that's what friends are for, I guess. And then suddenly I discovered a world of beauty. That Who T-shirt is definitely an eye-catcher. To see that band in their prime must be an absolute mind-blowing experience. With the madman on drums and the coolest bass player, they were kicking ass like no other band. Unfortunately, like you I suppose, I was born too late. So I settle with their killer perfomance on the Rolling Stones Rock And Roll circus DVD. Hell, with their explosive stage act of 'A quick one, while he's away' even The Stones must have thought 'We're in trouble'. Love your video's. Greetings.

Drool Worthy... I like the way you know the background on most of your finds...true skills at finding what's out there. You're right, don't be shy about what you pay, it helps justify the value. I find myself feeling one of two ways. "Wow I never knew this was out there" or "Finally it's been remastered, bonus tracks, pricy, But it's mine!" Some vinyl's are out there in the wild that truly need a new home, cleaned up, cared for, and protected. I passed by a pricy store(they always mark up everything, msrp plus), as a last resort I relinquished, went in, and I'll be dammed, they had exactly what I was searching a year for. Two albums from the eighties, not one scratch.(amazing). 1982 Frank Zappa" Ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch" and 1984 Roger Waters " Pros and cons of hitch hiking" (without the black box covering the woman's butt). Also from Zappa, a picture disk, two songs, reverse an entire side with label logo "Barking Pumpkin Records". And back in the 70's, even tv show personalities put out records, trying to cash in on vinyl success. Barbie Benton, a playboy bunny, got on some tv shows,(on the Playboy Record label). I BET, you could do a report on how many different "Labels" are in your collection so far. ALSO, find a reason to go to OHIO, and spend a few hours at the "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Museum" it's fun. Take Care

Hi Hanna been enjoying your videos and have taken a while to comment. You have been showcasing quite a number of Australian punk and indie bands and as an Australian it has been very heartening to see your appreciation for bands like The Saints and Radio Birdman who have never really received the attention they deserved in their home country. Your enthusiasm for the utterly superb Radio Birdman album 'Radios Appear' is completely justified. What a great band and album. It seems you picked up the US edition of this album that in fact has a different tracklist to the original 1977 Trafalgar Records release. I hope you get the chance to check out this version at some point. You will not be disappointed. As you are getting more into punk rock I figured it was worth mentioning the Australian punk band X. The first two albums from the Californian band of the same name features killer rocknroll all the way as does the debut 1980 album from the Australian band X titled 'X-Aspirations'. This record is all about hard and fast rocknroll played to maximum gritty effect. I think you would really like it. In any case well done for your open minded approach to first rate punk music!

And thanks for mentioned the Australian "X." I have been meaning to check them out big time. I hope X-Aspirations is available for me to sample on Apple Music! If not, I will find it on RUclips or elsewhere! Expect to see lots more punk on my channel! Cheers!

Great finds Hanna, and I'm glad that Wreckless Eric is a 10". I thought my depth perception was off. As always you gave me a few things to check out, including Subhumans, Radio Birdman, and that Moev sounds very interesting. That Throwing Muses is excellent, and if you like them, check out the debut from Mary's Danish-There Goes the Wondertruck. Glad you had a great trip and the vinyl racks are looking great!

Yes Easter is Patti Smith's third album and there is a story behind Because the Night. When I saw her in 2013 she related: when she and Fred "Sonic" Smith were courting back in the early 70's he would call her from Detroit every Friday at 8:00 P.M. One particular Friday he didn't call until midnight-she let him have it needless to say.
Concurrent to this, Springsteen had the basis of Because the Night but most of the song eluded him. Jimmy Iovine-producer of Easter-gave her a tape and asked if she could finish it off-she didn't want to.
However, whilst waiting for her ONE CALL, she put the tape in and-irritatingly-it matched her natural key. The lyrics are basically about her waiting for Fred to call and the doubt and frustration seeping in.
The Sparks album had 2 songs featued in the film Roller Coaster: Fill er Up and Big Boy.
Sorry for the length, cool finds!

The Move??!! Yowwzzz! Buy whatever you find! Roy Wood albums as well! Funny about the Clash U.K. debut. Yeah Epic released the U.S. pressing in 79 with 1978 singles sides interspersed with the album tracks leaving four songs in limbo. THOSE tracks(all essential) would end up on a compilation called Crucial Music with other B sides spanning their career. On Relativity Records,I believe. Good on you with the Radio Birdman! Skids?! You're killing me! Grails for sure! Folks, have a way Groovy summer and I'll stop using exclamation points to end my sentences. Keep On Rockin'! ( An actual name of a headshop/music store in Rochester N.Y. during early to mid 90s. They sold bongs, guitars, amps, whatever. Always a kick to call up and have the owner answer "Keep On Rockin'! in a loud stentorian voice. Alas, they did not sell records.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Well, Words Apart is BY FAR their best. Others have good songs here and there but also plenty of chaff. If you like that sort of energy and a solid through-and-through record, I would rather go to Big Black with Songs about @#$%ing. Should not be too hard to find, and easy to spot with the green cover and the comic book drawing. SNFU is another great fast punk-towards-metal band. Better than a Stick in the Eye is possibly my favorite release
You always go to record trade shows. How do you know about those? Would be fun to go to one, but just have no clue how to figure out where there might be one. Thanks!

Talk Talk were setting the table on Colour Of Spring - Life's What You Make It is incredible song. I saw Romeo Void opening for both U2 & XTC . I think Ric Ocasek Produced that EP - Never Say Never was huge in Los Angeles - sounded awesome on the 📻 . Great 👍 finds as always Hanna 😃 Turn On The A/C 💧!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert I'm from the Detroit area, lived in A2 (as we call Ann Arbor up here) for many years, I'm glad you had a successful trip. You remind me of myself back in the day with your vintage vinyl passion (I'm 57). There used to be a legendary used vinyl shop (which became a used CD shop) called Wazoo Records in A2, which my brother and I must have spent half of our young lives in rummaging through the bins - you brought back so many good memories! Anyway, just an fyi, I was just at a Godzilla festival in Chicago last Friday (July 15th) and the highway construction surrounding the city is horrific, it almost ruined the trip for me. There is no good way in or out. Traffic backups beyond belief. Huge ongoing highway construction projects that seem like they're never gonna be completed. I'd suggest flying in, but O'Hare is nut balls as well. I say this not to scare you away - Chicago is one of my favorite cities - but just as a heads up. Keep up the quality vinyl hunt!

I am gladvto seevthe Live At CBGB double LP. I was at CBGB when these groups were regulars. It's not a special album but there were a few great songs. The Tiff Darts were major players due to lead vocalist Robert Gordon and you should love the song "All For The Love Of RnR". Mink Seville were special with Willie Deville on vocals "Let me Dream if I Want to" was a classic early Bowery song. The Miami's were a Great band but disappeared from the scene never to be found. The Ruff Darts recorded a LP that lost its edge due to Robert Gordon leaving for a solo career, Robert's best LP is Rockabilly Boogie with a beautiful remark of "It's Only Make Believe" an old Eddie Cockran hit. Great stuff I'm just sad you had to pay so much for the music, music is to be passed on not sold for profit. Anyone who visits me leaves with LP' s in hand. I got 90% of my music free starting in 1969 and always passed it along for good karma.

Hey Hanna-Thanks for another excellent video! Love the song Fields Of People from The Move-Shazam. Radio Birdman do a great cover version o' 13th Floor Elevators' You're Gonna Miss Me (saw Elevators live in 1967.) Recently bought 2 "I'm A Mess" pins, inspired by Wreckless Eric. (Also noticed Sid Vicious wearin' one.) Grace Jones does a cover version o' The Normal's Warm Leatherette. Saw Romeo Void at the Monterey Fairgrounds. When you mentioned Ann Arbor I thought o' The Arbors (from Ann Arbor) whose cover version o' The Box Tops The Letter is highly recommended. Noticed some fantastic vinyl as you flipped through: Sam Phillips, Shriekback, The The, Gene Vincent, Muddy Waters, Adventures, Fountainhead. Not to belabor the Canadian thing too much, but maybe Carole Pope and Rought Trade, " High School Confidential ". My sister recently sent me her vinly copy of an underrated Canuck band - Goddo, the album, " Who Cares?, if it's lonely at the top, it's lonely at the bottom too! ". There is a live video church recording back in the day of Goddo brought by The New Music show, which was on a local Toronto TV network. Available on RUclips. I've never been to Ann Arbor, but I have been to some of the towns on the east side of Michigan like Flint, Lansing and Port Huron since they are fairly close. The Color of Spring is an amazing album from Talk Talk, one that I put on my turntable a lot. I would love to see a post-punk video from you. I've always loved The Cult's Sonic Temple, but also one I haven't been able to track down on vinyl. Beautiful copy! Okay, you mentioned Robert Fripp, so now David Sylvian is another one I have to the must-have list. I agree that you need both versions of The Clash, they are different enough from each other to merit getting both of them, just like many of the early Rolling Stones albums.
