In traditional terms, Polka = Simple beat Waltz = Compound beat A meter that is only polkas is a "simple meter" (3/4, 4/4) A meter that is only waltzes is a "compound meter" (6/8 - compound 2, 9/8 - compound 3) A meter that involves polkas and waltzes is a "complex meter", (5/4 - 1 polka and 1 waltz, 9/8 - 3 polkas and 1 waltz, 4/4 - 2 waltzes and 1 polka, two measures of 4/4 - 4 waltzes and 2 polkas) Not only is this video incredibly concise, unlike most music teaching type stuff on RUclips, it also gives intuitive 1 noun expressions for simple beat and compound beat.
As a percussionist I very much approve of this guide Although personally I find the kind of 3, 2, 2 division of 7/8 a bit unusual, and much prefer to use melodies and rhythms dividing 7/8 as 4, 3 or the other way around. It just feels easier to compartmentalize internally because mixed meter music already exists, it's not too difficult to keep track of 2 alternating feels when compared with 3 individual feels, where the last 2/8 might feel unnecessary. I think your example just feels this way because you're using such a clear example that works to explain all the other meters, but hopefully this gets more people thinking about how to write in 7/8 if they hear this video and feel that something's not right. This video is so concise it hurts, and I love it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 clever 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Pianist here with a looot of song writing in 3/4 - 6/8 (yes, I do know all time signatures well), looking for interesting patterns in 3/4 in electronic music, nowhere to be found it seems, except 3:4 polyrhythms that I still don't quite know how to apply.. any ideas?
Looking 3/4 in electronic music? That's kind of a broad question, innit? I don't know any electronic tunes in 3 off the top of my head, though a quick search of some likely suspects turned up "Divine Moments Of Truth" by Shpongle (skip to 2:50 specifically) (I'd argue thats more like 6 but w/e). Non-4 timesigs in electronic music tend to trend towards 7 or 5 or 11 or whatever autechre is doing. Similarly, breakcore and IDM seem like more likely suspects than house derivatives etc for anything odd time.
I also like to think that, but in all the discussion after that song dropped, I have no idea how much recognition this video got. I love the song and discussion that followed it tho.
Wait... If I use all waltz but my kit is made of Volcas is something going to break? This video was really fun and very helpful at the same time. You got my subscription.
Hey sci, I know this is a bit unrelated, but is it possible for you to put your song "Hurricane Dial" on newgrounds so that people like me can use it on a game known as "geometry dash"?
amazingly, the answer is no. newgrounds doesn't allow sampled material in their audio portal. of the 80 or so samples that I used in the song, only 5 or so would be allowed on newgrounds.
In traditional terms,
Polka = Simple beat
Waltz = Compound beat
A meter that is only polkas is a "simple meter" (3/4, 4/4)
A meter that is only waltzes is a "compound meter" (6/8 - compound 2, 9/8 - compound 3)
A meter that involves polkas and waltzes is a "complex meter", (5/4 - 1 polka and 1 waltz, 9/8 - 3 polkas and 1 waltz, 4/4 - 2 waltzes and 1 polka, two measures of 4/4 - 4 waltzes and 2 polkas)

I'm not entirely sure how to react to this, because this video was intended to be a funny joke, not an intuitive music teaching type thing.
scibot9000 Don't worry, the wife laughed her ass off, good joke. I'm just an incurable music theory nerd, and I like me some education.

Really? Huh, thats a strange rule for a music platform.
Well I would ask if you could but "come on Spinning", but I guess most of your music can't be placed on newgrounds.
Holy fuck
