If we could combine the depth of rail grinding from SA2, with the more reliable additions of easy rail switching (from Shadow onwards) and being able to homing attack towards a rail, that'd be freakin great. Though you would have to make the crouch a bit more manageable. I could never get it right unless it was a straight way down.
Personally, I wish rail grinding worked more the way it does in Tony Hawk (or even Jet Set Radio). What I mean is, rails in Sonic games have gradually just become little set paths that you transfer back and forth from. What I want is for Sonic to use the ENVIRONMENT to parkour around, not just go into "ride rail mode" and sit passively while he waits to rech the other end. In my dream game, Sonic would see grindable surfaces everywhere. Going downstairs? You could always roll down the steps, but if there's a handrail going down the side Sonic could grind it like a skateboarder would. Or say there's just a long bench, or an above-ground flower bed or something. Holding a button could send Sonic grinding down the edge like in Tony Hawk, preserving his momentum and playing in moret o the premise that Sonic views the world like an oversized playground. I dunno, grinding in its current form is awesome, don't get me wrong. I just want it utilized more often (and more organically) than it generally is.
Here's a tip: you can turn the Peel Out into some sort of super Spin Dash by immediately pushing down once you let it go. Don't hold the direction while using it, because running in Sonic 1 (and CD I think) has a strict speed limit that the game slows you to if you're pushing the pad to run.
Why have Wisps when you can actually use Sonic's friends as playable characters instead? Why have the OC when you can actually use Sonic's friends as playable characters instead? I miss Sonic's friends...
@Xavior a power-up is something that helps you beat a level, much like the Elemental Shields of yore, though they are not necessary to beating a stage. But when you need to use Wisps to clear a stage, it feels more like a gimmick rather than a power-up, or that's how I see it. Plus there's no real narrative reasoning for them to continue to be around as apposed to say the Chao, who actually live on the same planet as Sonic, unlike the Wisps. Ah, Chao, now there's another long forgotten thing from the games...

I learned this about a year ago, but Sonic Heroes actually does have SA2's rail grinding mechanics! If you hold the B button down, they'll crouch on the rail, and you'll have to balance the characters to maintain the absolutely insane amounts of speed that you gain. It can be pretty tough to balance though, especially in some of Rail Canyon/Bullet Station's Picasso-ass rail segments. It makes dodging the last laser on Final Fortress a breeze.
@@chaomix You missed the overpowered version of the spindash.. It's *Spamdash* By repeatedly spamming action button you can perform pretty quick spindash without ever stopping. Spamdash - A tier
Secret Tip for Rail Grinding in Sonic Heroes... You actually do gain speed for holding the B button, not mashing it. It's actually wildly fast. I didn't discover that myself until I 100%'d the game last year and learned how to properly dodge the laser cannons of Final Fortress.
33:06 Little aside on the Blue Cube, it also makes Sonic invincible. Sure you still take recoil and lose rings, but if you get hit while it's active and have no rings, Sonic doesn't die.
Considering how the power of friendship/teamwork was used to get past obstacles in forces, Team Racing, and heck SA1 demonstrated it. If that isn't a sign of infinite meta-physical power source in this franchise I don't know what is.
The sad thing for the double boost is, it doesn't matter if you keep spamming the button it's still going to activate the attack no matter what because that's what the game creators want to have, working along with Sonic
While I'm not good at it, I love the Insta-Shield purely because it raises the skill ceiling for the games it is in. The better reaction time you have, the safer you are as Sonic, and I think that thematically that is exactly what Sonic should be like.
8:10 20 years old, 20 years playing sonic 3 e knuckles, 20 years having this as my favorite game of all time only now i know the insta shield is not just a visual effect
The only time I've ever had use out of the Light Speed Attack was with that one Artificial Chaos enemy in Crazy Gadget that spawned a fuckton of mini-ACs. That was so satisfying to use.
I made the tier list template publicly available and put the link in the description. Make your own tier list and send it in our Discord server! (Link also in the description)
I never expected you to rank double boost in A tier, for me it's a mediocre C tier for how strong it is in terms of the story, but also how flawed it is in terms of gameplay
That claim isn't actually too outrageous, the "sneeze" is actually a scrapped ability called "Sonic Sense". A bit like Spidey Sense with Spiderman, Sonic sneezes whenever he senses danger.
I know I'm super late but something you forgot to mention about Sonic Heroes is how you can use the Light Speed Attack after doing a Team Blast. after you use it the Team Blast bar will slowly drain, but while it drains you can use an instant Light Speed Attack as Sonic by just pressing B mid-air. idk if this would affect the Team Blast or the Light Speed Dash's position though
Now that we got all of the all moves from the games, we need a tier list for the Sonic comics. Some of the things Sonic is capable of in that medium, especially in the Archie comics, are completely insane. I would love to see someone do a teir list of those abilities.
“Be sure to Subscribe to avoid being sent straight to the F Tier.” Bro, I’m already F tier IRL. Getting that in one of your videos let alone an appearance at all would easily be one of my biggest achievements to date.
Sorry, just wanna ask: Being as unbiased as possible, wouldn't hover wisp be ranked closer to the light speed dash? (Same for pink/spike and spin dashing, only I'd actually argue it's better than the OG move)
Magic gloves are wierd but can be useful for getting rid an annoying enemy from a distance. City escape has a beetle drone with an electric shield that blocks the stairs at a certain spot. Magic gloves get rid of that enemy so I don’t have to wait for his shield to drop. It’s also how you’re supposed to defeat an artificial chaos floating over a bottomless pit in cannon’s core.
21:27 Correction: This transformation requires the Dark Fake Emeralds. They will increase Sonic's negative emotion until he gets consumed and then turns into Dark Sonic. The Fake Emeralds are said even by their own creator to be inferior to the Chaos Emeralds, and are only used to power machines. With that mind, the form is weaker than Super Sonic. Still, he defeated with not much trouble two robots that have equivalent status of Sonic's base form, so he is still a good boost. Still deserved B tier despite all that.
I've been playing Sonic 3 since release day. Insta shield would have easily been F tier for me when I was a kid. It wasn't until this year I even learned that the insta shield could deflect projectiles or phase through spiked enemies to destroy them. Now, it's straight up S tier just for the satisfaction I get every time I successfully pull it off. It might not be as flashy as some other abilities, but the fact that it's so skill based makes it the most rewarding.
The Super Emeralds are either recharging or non-canon. Either way, imagine how powerful Sonic would be in Hyper form now that he knows so much more about Chaose Energy and Chaos Control.
The super emeralds were added for the people who bought sonic and knuckles after beating sonic 3 as a "thank you for buying both halfs of the story enjoy this op ability as your reward" which is pretty creative but im not sure about them being cannon despite them being refrenced in mania.. maybe you have a point with the recharging maybe sonic just never thought to bring the chaos emeralds back to the master emerald to super charge them again... or maybe he has ptsd of the blue spheres special stage lmao
I feel like it would be a good idea in the future games to make it so that whenever you stomp/bounce down, Sonic's trajectory is slightly homed in on any rails below him, if there are any. That would be a good balance of not getting forcefully sucked onto rail during normal gameplay, while also giving the player the ability to stick the landing on the rails which can be very inconsistent

The peel out, although still not super amazing, does have an advantage you didn't seem to notice. Where as when you spindash, the ability ends as soon as you jump / leave the ground. After doing a peel out, as long as you keep the input held down and don't have to stop, the ability continues and you can just keep going with max speed.
Fun fact: Hyper Sonic is a fusion of the S3&K Shield Abilities. The directional jumps are based on the mobility each shield gives, mainly behaving like the Flame Shield, the lack of drowning is from the bubble shield, and the screen nuke... is actually from the thunder shield, when entering water! It's a interesting detail that I don't think enough people notice!
The Super Peelout has an upside of instantly taking you to top speed and being able to maintain it. If you spindash on a flat plain that speed is going to quickly run out. This doesn't apply to the peelout
Lol, had me nervous when you got to Chaos Control. I was thinking, "if this isn't the most obvious S, I'm out," ha. That shit changed Sonic's world, it's pretty much _the_ ability at this point
One thing you got wrong about Dark Sonic: It's not just caused by the anger Sonic had, it's also caused by the fake Chaos Emeralds that was in that episode.
Some tips for some of the gems in Sonic 06: You can actually clip through doors with white gem right before if you land on the ground. Combining the Green Gem with the Red gem actually makes it last long AND you can move it around when you done break dancing Also for the purple gem: Theres an error in the code that doesn't drain Sonic's energy bar. You can actually one shot the final boss with the sky blue gem which is pretty nice when speedrunning the game.
Insta-Shield should at least be A tier, it can dodge most attack be used to defeat some enemies without taking damage, it can help you to defeat bosses, it is pretty easy to get the timing down, and it can be very satisfying to use. If you can count the times you've purposely used it on your hands, then in my eyes, you're playing the game wrong.
It's only really faster than the Spin Dash overall if you're playing the original release of Sonic CD, where the Spin Dash is not really fun to use, because it takes like 3 or 4 full seconds to charge up, unlike Sonic 2, 3, and pretty much any other 2D game with the ability, where you can charge it up faster. In the Taxman version, they give you the option to use the Sonic 2 spindash which is infinitely better.
Something I found while playing Sonic Heroes is that the railgrinding mechanic does actually function very similarily as in SA2. Holding the crouch button instead of spamming it while going down a rail will net you higher speeds and you also still need to balance to go faster. Spamming the crouch button only really helps when grinding on level rails. It doesn't really change the tier list, I just thought it was a lesser known fact about grinding in Sonic Heroes and wanted to share my findings (after Sonic Heroes, however, spamming is the only viable option for gaining speed)
Yeah, this is true and something I learned about over a decade of originally owning the game. Shame that the game doesn't do a decent job at teaching this at all, since not knowing about the balancing mechanism was the reason why I used to hate Rail Canyon and similar stages.
@@QwerpOS agreed, it is also the reason I would never finish the game because of the last laser in Egg Fortress which always seemed to hit me, because I lost so much speed while spamming. The first time I held crouch, that level was a cakewalk
Not sure if anyone's mentioned it but, a niche use that slightly validates it, the Light-Speed Attack and MAXIMUM HEAT KNUCKLES ATTACK deals double damage to bosses, at least in SA1. Very useful for speeding up Chaos 4 and 6 if you can pull it off.

Yes. That's why I like playing the older games.
@Xavior what am i playing again sonic or mario

They're too stupid
I learned this about a year ago, but Sonic Heroes actually does have SA2's rail grinding mechanics! If you hold the B button down, they'll crouch on the rail, and you'll have to balance the characters to maintain the absolutely insane amounts of speed that you gain. It can be pretty tough to balance though, especially in some of Rail Canyon/Bullet Station's Picasso-ass rail segments. It makes dodging the last laser on Final Fortress a breeze.

Little aside on the Blue Cube, it also makes Sonic invincible.
The sad thing for the double boost is, it doesn't matter if you keep spamming the button it's still going to activate the attack no matter what because that's what the game creators want to have, working along with Sonic

yall ever notice that sonic inherited all the powers of the elemental shields in the classic games?
Magic gloves are wierd but can be useful for getting rid an annoying enemy from a distance. City escape has a beetle drone with an electric shield that blocks the stairs at a certain spot. Magic gloves get rid of that enemy so I don’t have to wait for his shield to drop. It’s also how you’re supposed to defeat an artificial chaos floating over a bottomless pit in cannon’s core.
8:13 that sound effect in the song syncs really well with sonic insta-shielding that bullet
21:27
Correction:
This transformation requires the Dark Fake Emeralds.

Whenever I play SA2 and use the Bounce Bracelet, it feels like it does that already.

Can’t watch rn but I’ll be back later-ish
Or tomorrow
Fun fact: Hyper Sonic is a fusion of the S3&K Shield Abilities. The directional jumps are based on the mobility each shield gives, mainly behaving like the Flame Shield, the lack of drowning is from the bubble shield, and the screen nuke... is actually from the thunder shield, when entering water!
It's a interesting detail that I don't think enough people notice!
it doesn't magnet rings though
@@Fafr true, but that would be incredibly OP.
The Super Peelout has an upside of instantly taking you to top speed and being able to maintain it. If you spindash on a flat plain that speed is going to quickly run out. This doesn't apply to the peelout

Parkour was in Sonic Heroes since some Speed characters could wall cling/wall jump.
Sonic/Shadow can wall cling in SA2 as well
Insta-Shield should at least be A tier, it can dodge most attack be used to defeat some enemies without taking damage, it can help you to defeat bosses, it is pretty easy to get the timing down, and it can be very satisfying to use. If you can count the times you've purposely used it on your hands, then in my eyes, you're playing the game wrong.
The peel out has 2 differences than the peel out.
1. It can’t be reved up like the Spindash.
2. It’s faster than the Spindash
@@TheSnowQueen_369 well there are not many other games that you can use it
Something I found while playing Sonic Heroes is that the railgrinding mechanic does actually function very similarily as in SA2.
