  • John Bazz, bass player and founding father of the Blasters, tells his story for the first time! He grew up in Downey, California and became part of the punk and rockabilly scene alongside X and the Cramps, eventually forming the Blasters with Bill Bateman, Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin. He has also worked with Marc Ford of the Black Crowes, Bruce Willis and Mike Eldred, while raising two sons and remaining true to the roots rock n roll he has always loved.

Wow so cool! Downey is where The Carpenters are from .. oh and James Hetfield. Pretty cool listening to all the others.

John is awesome! My favorite bass player ever!!! Back in the 90's and 2000's I'd attend Blaster's shows, Mike Eldred trio shows and Blue shadows shows all over So. Cal. I'd film John playing, as I wanted to be "that kind" of player myself (Learning bass at the time) He was always so nice, very friendly. Sad he doesn't get the attention he deserves from the mainstream bass community but, real bass players know (Like John Doe) and I think that's fine with Bazz.
Being back in the area after 12 years I'm praying Phil recovers and I get to see my favorite band play again....

Very interesting interview. I found it interesting that he is a bit aloof in his dismissal of other genres and other bands. I particularly loved his comments about Guns and Roses - a band that was grossly overrated. His comment that, “I couldn’t pick them out of a lineup,” was spot on. Why listen to garbage music they put out when you are actively a member of a group of real and talented musicians. I first saw The Blasters in 1982 when they opened for the Go-Gos at Berkley. And, my gosh, I was immediately taken by their music. On that night, for me, they eclipsed the Go-Gos in every way. I was, in an instant, a lifelong fan. The standout song for me that night was “I’m Shakin” - their cover of that song is off the charts - they OWNED that song. In that concert they had a piano player - Gene Taylor - and a horn section. I’ll remember that night forever. I was in the USN so crossing paths with them over the years has been difficult, but I did get to see them at The Boathouse in Norfolk, VA and years later at the Belly-Up Tavern in Solano Beach in CA. They are one of my favorite bands of my lifetime - in my circle they rub elbows with ELO, Oingo Boingo, City Boy, early Aerosmith, Alan Parsons Project, Queen, and Supertramp, to name just a few. I also loved his reflection about Sun Records because I have thought the exact same thing about being there…the place is surreal. Great interview, John. To the moderator, thank you for choosing John to interview.

An ex-GF had a house party in Hollywood, and had a then unknown Guns and Roses play. After they finished playing, she asked them all to leave.
