- In this video of Radical, also called Free Radical (in chemistry, molecule that contains at least one unpaired electron. i.e charge on it) is discussed.
With the idea of radicals and their valencies, we can frame proper formula.
Radical is a bit tough chapter in chemistry so to make interesting and especially for beginners,( class7/8/9) this video will be very helpful. This shows an easy way to find valency instead of memorising...

Tomorrow is my paper of chemistry and I'm very confused about radical
Thankyou mam to explain very easily
Hope your exam went well
Thank you madam for this video... It helps me to understand the tough chapter

Omg..... So clear..... Your explainations mam..... I have gone through many lectures.... But....

Will you explain the charges..how is it same for sulphate and Sulphite though number of oxygen is different 4 and 3? As you did it for ammonium and hydroxide.
Here, charges aren't linked with the number of atoms present in the radicals. As explained in the video, Radicals having sulphur present in it have a valency of 2. Moreover sulphate and sulphite differ in the presence of oxygen atoms present in them, as you see sulphate has '4' oxygen atoms whereas sulphite has '3' atoms.
Hope you understand. 🤡
Sulphate is composed of 4 oxygen atoms sulphite is composed of 3 oxygen atoms bonded to sulfur atom
Thank you mam for giving such a nice explanation about radicals

What is the difference between ion and radical . Also element and radical
@@K92794 radicals have one or more unpaired electron, but ions have paired electrons
@@K92794 radical is an atom of an element or a group of atoms of different elements that behaves as a single unit with a positive or negative charge on it.
@@sciencecircle8625 I understand that a free radical is an atom or molecules with an unpaired electron. Would that mean that every single element on periodic table that has an odd atomic number is by definition a free radical

In Criss cross method the numerical value of each of the ion charges is crossed over to become the subscript of the other ion.

Thanks.
Oxygen has valency 2 because it gains two electrons. Valency of sulphate is also 2 so what is the reason????
In Sulphate ion (SO4)²-, sulphur has charge of +6 while a single oxygen has a charge of -2.
There are four oxygen atoms present in Sulphate which makes a total charge for oxygen to be (-2 x 4) = -8.
If you add charges of oxygen and sulphur together (-8+6), you will have -2 as the charge on Sulphate.
Hope this helps you?
Sulphur has 6 electrons in its outer shell. Oxygen has a oxidation no. -2, for four oxygen atoms, we have oxidation number of -8.
Sulphur has 6 electrons in its outer shell. Oxygen has a oxidation no. -2, for four oxygen atoms, we have oxidation number of -8.
Calculate:-8+6=-2
very amazing and dangerous
Why we take positive valency of hydrogen
Hydrogen atom loses this electron easily to become stable or to make bonds with other atoms. Thus on losing this one electron, positive ions are formed. Therefore, the valency of hydrogen is +1.
Yoo, Thanks, I have to do this in our school in the blackboard 🙂
Did it work?
Mam thank you very much
Thank you ma'am you solved my all doubts in chemistry thanks
Thank you..
Pls share and subscribe my channel
It is not truely correct
Radicals can also be neutral, they have to have odd number of valent electrons.

Like you said about NH4+
How the charge is calculated in (SO4)2- and others
i also have that concerns. S is -2. Oxygen is -2 * 4= -8. -2 -8 = -10. I will expect the ion to be -10
1. Sulfur is central atom
2. Sulfur donates its 6 electrons present ini its valency shell(2 each to 3 oxyegen)
3. Since it is SO4 one more oxygen present requires 2 electrons to fill itu valency shell(sulfur and 3 oxygen atoms are stable)
4. Therefore 2 electrons are put asa charge to make this ion neutral.
5. Therefore valency of sulfur to be take +6 valency of oxygen atoms to be taken -2
6. So, +6 +4(-2)=-2
Ignore spelling mistakes😂
@@taiwodavid9598 can refer to the explanation:)

In the last chart of valancies, phosphate has 2 valancy, but acc to rule there should be 3 🙄🙄🙄
Sorry 😔😔
Yes valency is 3 due to requirement of 3 more electrons to complete the octet.
Valency can also be 5 also

Radicals are not the same as ions!
i was going to say the same
free radicals have one or more unpaired electron, but ions have paired electrons. . But Both are unstable when compared to corresponding atoms. Both are electron-deficient/enriched when compared to the atoms they are composed of
