A little word of advice for Houston learning to fly fish. When I was younger a great fly fisherman taught me to practice casting in my yard without a fly on the line. I was so glad he gave me that advice because one time the end of the line actually hit me in the corner of my right eye when doing a cast in a slight wind. I can't impress on you enough to practice in your yard doing casts before trying to put a fly on.

A tip for fly fishing is when u cast it out don’t immediately make another cast as soon as it hits the water unless you’re trying to get more line out of the end of your rod to cast with or drying your topwater fly off (dry fly). This is like making a cast with a jig or crankbait or whatever you are using and then as soon as it hits the water you reel it back it in fast. Instead of this you want to work it back to you slowly. I personally like the twitch twitch pause retrieve. Let the fly sink about 3/4 of the way to the bottom (to avoid snags) and then twitch it once or twice and then let it sink for about 4-5 secs and repeat. If you see a fish chasing your fly and stop it on purpose so the fish can eat it the fish will eventually lose interest in your fly and swim away from it. Make it look injured, but not dead. Also I highly recommend wearing polarized sunglasses, this helps you see your fly better underwater and what’s happening, it also protects your eyes from the fly that is being casted around so you don’t get hooked. One way I detect bites on the fly rod is i wait to see if my fly line is taking off, that way I know there is a fish on. The other way is I see the fish strike at the fly.

Birdwatching in the backyard is always fun. We have a green meany, hummingbird. He runs the “pilon races”, he chases the others away from the feeders!😂 They must go 3 rounds of the house before he has to chase another away! It’s hilarious!

Houston, when fly-fishing strip out just enough line to get the motion going - don't let the fly land before retrieving it - letting out a little more line with each cast to get the distance you ultimately want. Then when you do let it land, leave it in the water longer. You can wiggle it as it lays to simulate the movement of a real fly for a while as you slowly pull back in your line until you shorten it up to the same length you started casting with. You're doing really good for just starting out.

Hey Daniel. You need a little white or yellow "popper" to catch bluegill and crappie You can use a little fuzzy "mouse" for bass. Check out local bait or bass pro for "K&E Stopper Lures Panfish Popper fly-3 packs:" try the white or yellow. size #10. I don't get any kick back on this but they are what I have used for years to catch pan fish of all types. Cast it and let the popper sit on the water until the ripples almost disappear. Then tweak it a little to make it look like a bug struggling on the surface. Then wait again to let the ripples settle and that's normally when you get your bite. Pan fish have to look at it a little bit to see if it's safe to "bite". They let the bug dround a little so it doesn't struggle going down. LOL

Daniel, have Huston cast parallel to the dike, if right handed, then cast to the right or left handed, cast to the left ever how much line you want. Then point tip of your pole, almost in the water, just above it about a inch. Now in a large clockwise motion, circle and roll the line outward toward the center at right angle to your body. Then work the cast to you exact opposite for left-handed.
    Rev Paul,Eustis Fl.

You’re right Daniel when you mentioned possibly viewing some You Tube videos to learn more about casting with a fly rod. See if you can find one that shows how to do a roll cast. It is very useful when casting when there is brush behind you like you have at your pond because the line doesn’t go behind you during a roll cast if it is done properly. Hope this helps. Take care.

But it takes practice. These donkeys are healthy, never have seen such different colors of donkeys. They do make nice pets. Windshields need cleaning.. Various wildlife enjoy you deer baiters putting corn out. If you ever can go to a running creek that’s Houston can Wade out in, that’s the joy of fly fishing, but this is good practicing. Hi Daneil, when stringing a fly rod, take the end of the fly line where it attaches to the leader, bend the fly line in half and string the fly rod. If you drop the line it willl only fall to the next guide not to the beginning of the rod. As far as leaders are conerned : generally the leader should be the length of the fly rod. However in Houston,s case I would use a 7 1/2 foot leader for "#3X " leader. Just for beginners!! Have fun.

10 and 2 o clock position will help on the casting, have him go out in the back yard and set up some targets. Huston seems to be a competitive little guy so you get one and have a competition with him and you both will get better. I used to use saucers and put prizes under them.

Sometimes its good to just slow down and enjoy the moment. As I've gotten older, my body has forced me to slow down, and at first, I resented that greatly, but what I am coming to realize, is that in the whole scheme of things, a lot of the busyness was just that. It didn't amount to a lot. It kept me from enjoying those precious moments. I'm so thankful now, that I have some time in which to enjoy the right now, rather than rushing to the next thing to be done, and sorry that it took my ageing body to bring me to the realization.

As you draw back to cast hesitate then cast forward which will allow the fly to go fully backward and travel forward for longer casts. Then when casted, strip the line back to keep the fly moving… with practiced you will enjoy it!

Lol, your donkeys in row🤣. I use to live on the lake! We had 2 private docks behind the house in a somewhat private cove. When I lost my 22 yr old son in a car accident, for 4 years I went to the docks. I felt closer to God and my son and spent many hours fishing! 🙏🏻. It will be 15 years next month since I lost my Tyson. I no longer live on the lake. Getting ready to move into a Senior Citizen apartment. I LOVE watching your fishing videos.

Suggestion: when pulling line off water, rod should not be pointed behind. Pull and point straight up and let line go behind you, then down hard.

Yes, by stopping in the 12 o'clock position your rod tip is at its highest point. Hesitate a second or less for the line to straighten out behind you, you will feel a slight tug when the line gets straight behind you. Then go forward to 3 o'clock and as line gets back in front of you release your slack line and it will all go back out. Still have my first fly rod which is over 60 yrs. old.
