There are many good sources out there that discuss the proper placement of the Static Pressure Sampling Holes in your avionics bay to prevent the very effect you are seeing. Check out the instruction manual for any high-end model rocket altimeter for the recommendations for size and placement of the holes. I think your avionics bay should at a minimum be sealed from the motor area, as I've read in the same instructions that the smoke from black powder is really bad for the MEMS air pressure sensors. I think you could tighten up your accuracy with some simple airtight bulkheads in your body.

I completely agree with this, in addition to proper placement you can also develop a calibration curve (empirically) that the controller can use to compensate pressure measurement errors from flow interactions with the air frame.

I was very skeptical that you would achieve your goals with solid rocket propulsion and commercial hobby motors. Now that I have seen the level of analysis and scholarship you are bringing to the project, I think it's just a matter of time and persistence until you nail a landing. The level of self-instructed practical knowledge you've achieved is rare, but even more unusual in a person who is also such a great explainer and storyteller! My hat is off to you, Joe.

    That was so awesome
    Two things to consider:
1.This solution will work fine on your "drone dropping" enviroment, but not anywhere else really. Consider adding a speed sensor which detects wind speed - you can produce from this kind of setup your true height to a vary high degree of accuracy (the same as they do in planes). Its really only this or some radar that can get you a true height measurement.
2.I dont actually know what your proccess includes, but it would be really nice to understand why these test flights are so far apart and take so long to get up and ready.

Proof that anyone can transition from an “Out of focus videographer” to become a respected rocket scientist if you have the PASSION for a subject....every student wondering “ Why Maths ? ” should watch this to the end.....and then go and watch his first video.

you can put some thing under the engine that moves with a servo and can reduce engine power by closing and opening so you can land with accuracy and the roket wont have to guess when will the engine stop

Agreed. A set of 4 fireproof shunts that rotate into the exhaust as it reaches 12 inches from ground and redirects the engine force outwards. Think of the way that VTOL aircraft control their thrust direction. The shunts could also control the side to side drop variances.

I’m still so impressed you did a hover with a solid engine.

So nice to have a refresher on how 'fun' real world physics sims are. I miss playing with angle calculations.

made it to the end without a bathroom break, today's accomplishment! Digging the rocket science. Could that make me a better person? You betcha!

Hey Joe! You are creating a pitot tube with the body of the rocket, if you isolated the computer and left only a small hole or 2 on the side, to get only the static pressure, maybe solve it. I love the ECHO lander, keep up the great work!
