RIP Hide!!! X Japan are so legendary it hurts!!! I mean, you don't fill Tokyo Dome to the max if you're not amazing! I know you enjoy BABYMETAL and they pay tribute in so many ways in so many songs
I totally went and added Endless Rain to the queue right after the reaction but I really don't think he's gonna like it. I agree though, the end of that song gets me every damn time.
5:51 _Kurenai daaaa!_ Remember this when listening certain SuMetal solo live at Budokan 2014 ;) Just like you said Yoshiki is a living legend, mad respect to him. He's currently doing some promotionals for Coca-cola and a energy drink called X, mah man on the business 😎 If you want to listen a beautiful ballad you got "Endless Rain", you already heard "No Rain No Rainbow" so you'll find some resemblance and tribute on that. I would love to see your reaction to "Art Of Life", that's not a song for everyone and you need to be mentally prepared, but I'm afraid your vid will last 2 hours at least, if not more lol Always love your breakdown on such legendary songs. R.I.P. Hide, at least we got the new gen taking the lead. 🤘
Like you mentioned, BABYMETAL are huge X-Japan fans. The Su-metal solo song 'Akatsuki' (Red Moon) uses the character Kurenai (紅), often translated as "crimson", when the Japanese song title is written out. There are a lot of other X-Japan references in their song lyrics and choreography. Su was born about a week and a half before 'The Last Live' concert (December 31, 1997) at Tokyo Dome that this footage is from.
Yeah, the Babymetal fans have probably told you all the connections between Babymetal and XJapan. The neckbrace you see in Babymetal is in reference to Yoshiki (the drummer, pianist, song writer), when Babymetal calls out "we are" and response "Babymetal" is the same as "We are X" for XJapan. my mind Babymetal is the spiritual successor to XJapan.... the crowd interaction, the stage performance. If you like the fans singing back, I hope someone sends you Endless Rain from Last Live... rumor is, the crowd is STILL singing. 🤘🦊🤘 WE ARE X
This song should be an anthem of Metal like master of puppets or the trooper... I love X-Japan, they are responsible for the metal in japan sounding like it sounds. Thanks to x-Japan Bands like Lovebites and Band-maid (my 2 favorites) exist
It's about time. And so much more from X Japan to go through. Do yourself a favor. Do all you can find. And luckily, there are recordings of Kurenai with better mix as well. If you don't like second reaction, at least look one up for your own pleasure. Knowing how you like to see crowd interaction, you should REALLY look up more of X Japan. I remember seeing a recording (don't remember the song, sorry) where they ended up sitting on the stage with some drinks, and the audience just kept on singing the song. I heard the audience tends to sing their songs before and after the concert as well.
There is a show where Yoshiki starts with a beautiful piano intro, while one of the guitarist is on the violin. That's a beautiful intro! Ps: So many BabyMetal fans here, paying homage to X-Japan, nice thing :D
Love X-Japan. Godfathers of Japanese Metal. If you wondering what arena this was. Tokyo Dome. Same arena like your Babymetal Ijime Dame Zetai reaction song was from. Biggest stage you can play in Japan.
Thanks for doing this reaction. X-Japan is an amazing band, inspired by western band/sounds but definitely have their own Japanese sound/aesthetic, etc. Some of the earliest DVDs I have terrible sound as well. I wonder if their is something about live recording getting them on DVD was somehow hard to do at the time. My guess is the live recording at Tokyo Dome (a terrible place for sound). This was actually one of the big worries for Babymetal at Tokyo Dome. I've personally been at a stadium to see a rock band and sound was a mess for where I was in the audience. I walked out. 😞 You talked about the X in the air for lighting, now i wonder if Babymetal was inspired by that too, they had 3 crosses in the air. Babymetal and it's relationship with audiences has a clearly inspiration from them. Not sure which mom, but Suzuka's or Moa's was a X-Japan fan too, i think.
Totally agreed on the mix of the whole Last Live concert, a lot of their way older stuff from the 80s (DVDs) sounds so much better. I think a lot of fans keep recommending this version to people because of the emotional heavyness of this being their last concert before their reunion in the 2000s, I feel like you really picked up on that. Anything from the Vanishing Vision, Blue Blood, & Jealousy albums sounds just worlds better with their incredible former original bassist Taiji (no hate to Heath, their current one who was also playing during Last Live, nobody could have filled the big shoes of his predecessor musically). So if you opt for reacting to live versions of songs from those three, I strongly recommend the lives up to 1992.1.7, though there is also a sweet rendition of their classic single "X" in 2010 with both bassists (+ new lead guitar) on stage. Stoked for more X reactions!
DH, you have introduced me to so many different bands and music. Just as you are discovering the artists also, in many cases. I don't always agree with your perspective on what is seen and heard, but you always have good insights on what is played. It helps expand my appreciation for the creative effort, or lack thereof. By the way, where is Ms DH wife?. She is an enjoyable addition to the channel, as she gives a more " layman" view that's always welcomed by me. Keep up the good work.
Been a rocker and all ‘round music connoisseur since the 60s, 750 plus record albums still playin’. I discovered XJapan for myself a year ago and can’t stop listening to and collecting every tangible piece of music and video of Yoshiki and his band. Queenie and I are on the same page. Phenomenal musicianship, Yoshiki scores every instrument, including the drums, wrote 99% of all their songs, lyrics. He’s a classical pianist Since 4 yrs. old and of international renown these days for his compositions. His XJapan masterpiece is Art of Life. Do yourself a favor-😊😉Read up on this fascinating genius and see We Are X.
Man, you need to watch their "last live" from the original band, the public keep on singing the chorus from the last song they play that night until the band go out of stage after going along with the public for some 10+ minutes. Also the end of the original band is one of the most heavy you ever hear. Is not on the wiki, by the way. Because involves cults, overdose and suicide. Not only Hide had die but also the bass player that you couldn't hear it.
Do you know the story of this live bro? Imagine..This is the Last Live after the singer announced he want to leave the band after playing together for 20 years. And this is their breakthrough song 20 years ago. They have not met for almost a year. No rehearsal. The singer didn’t even want to come and felt a lot pressure cause the fan all blamed him for the disbandment, but the guitarist Hide, the red hair guy, ask him to do it together for the last time with the fans. RIP Hide!
If you want to see really strong crowd interaction please react X-Japan "Endless rain" from Last Live. I've never seen something like that. Even at Babymetal concerts. Storm of emotions of Yoshiki and power of Toshi's voice. And the crowd...That's what you love :) You'll be crying from the middle of the song till the end, I guarantee ... ruclips.net/video/7rwJIeN1M7o/видео.html
The drummer Yoshiki is a great human!, despite all the tragedy that has followed this band. Just in the last few months he has raised over $10 million for the current tragedy in Ukraine, that all started form a donation of 10 million yen (about $87,000) of his own money.
This is a recording from their last live in 31st December of 1997, the audio quality is from that time. The audio recording is not as great as nowadays. Their Last Live was really great with a 4 hours long durations. But this band is really making the crowds crazy. I wish I was there. They also did a lot of ballad songs and you should check and react to that songs as well
Maybe u already know that. But this was the last live they've made before the mande ends ... So this was the best effort they've ever made ... U should try endless rain u'll be blown away with the crowd singing one last time his favourite band ... And as u should know, X Japan was a biggest movement musicaly in Japan. They have made other great talents appear ... U should try Versailles too. . Very great technical glam metal band
Thank you so much for doing this song. You can hear the twin guitar influence they had on newer bands like Nemophila who do a kick ass cover of this song btw. I can watch Yoshiki drum all day. He hits hard! Since my Japanese journey began, this is still one of my favourite songs. Endless Rain from the same show is absolutely incredible. It's my musical Kryptonite. Tears every time. Unfortunately it gets blocked tons. Again, great review. Cheers.
I know you don’t research anything about the bands and songs before you react, but you need this (short version) history lesson for X and Kurenai. Yoshiki and Toshi (lead singer), friends since they were 5, founded the band together in 1982. “Kurenai” was their first major release single in 1988 and it LAUNCHED the band. Fast forward to 1997, where Toshi decides to leave the band and pisses off Yoshiki. X Japan announce their breakup and a final concert, The Last Live. The entire band is angry at Toshi this entire concert. The only one who really controls the anger is hide (pink haired guitarist, RIP) and his look to Toshi at the beginning of Kurenai is kind of an “it’s going to be okay.” It’s been a while since I watched this concert dvd but I believe Kurenai was when the band started to release their anger towards Toshi. Except for Yoshiki. For him, it’s during “Endless Rain.” ~Queenie
I was at this concert (yeah I’m 43 so I was old enough to be there😂) and the anger towards Toshi was mostly coming from Yoshiki in the beginning when Toshi who was brainwashed by his dumb cult at the time told him he had to quit X JAPAN. They only spoke via their respectful lawyers most of the time until the concert, but when Toshi and Yoshiki fall in each other’s arms during the forever love song, you can tell that anger isn’t the main feeling in this concert, it’s the purest of emotions, Toshi with his regrets for betraying his childhood friend, Yoshiki with his overflowing sensitivity couldn’t hold back from crying in his friends arms, their was a feud but this concert opened the way to forgiveness. Hide has always been the cement of the group, which is why I have trouble seeing their recent concert without him since he passed away but yeah you were right about him reassuring Toshi that every thing would be ok in this last live. To sum it up, I’d say the last live needs to be seen from the beginning to the end in order to grasp the high level of emotion that it holds.
The moment you talked about how the crowd singing hitting you in the feels, you ABSOLUTELY NEED to watch X Japan's (Last Live) Endless Rain. That will hit your very soul it's so impactful.
Kurenai was released in english before, also theres difference between when Taiji still in the band and after Taiji left. During Taiji era, you can still hear the bass line, and he was quite iconic backthen. Clip of the english ver Kurenai with Taiji still in the band: watch?v=dZJqnjHc5eg Sorry for my bad english.

Love all your reactions.. this one included.. but if you have a violin friend that is huge into them.. you did the wrong version. There is one with a violin intro by one of the guitar players that you should listen to
One X Japan song that's absolutely incredible, but rarely played bc, well, Yoshiki can't play the drums and piano at the same time, obviously, is Silent Jealousy, but the music video is still absolutely worth watching
this is a 1997 video and a lowered quality upload on youtube, obviously to prevent pirating... not sure what you expect from an almost 30 year old video though, you won't get 2022 bluray quality on youtube :)
The sound of the video from RUclips is terrible indeed, I have no idea what they changed but I had this on DVD since 20 years and it sounds totally different. Here you can barely hear the singer and the whole sound is muffled.
Japan has a lot of really great female rock and metal bands that has come out the latest years. Sadly those have almost buried the great male rock and metal bands that also exist. So great to see one of the older ones, hopefully we also get around to my favourite band Versailles.
10:05: The poor audio quality, it's not their fault. I think IT IS the band leader's fault. He (Yoshiki) is the bloke who has uploaded this on RUclips. He is the Drummer/Keyboard and main composer of the band, and also "God" to his fans. I have just compared it to the original VHS tape that I purchased in the late 90s, and I find that the sound on YT sounds as if it was awfully re-mastered. I couldn't imagine him not being involved with the remastering. Maybe he chose to lower the quality on purpose for the "free version" on YT. Him being a perfectionist, I couldn't imagine him not noticing the bad sound quality. Extra Note: I find the original sound mix not that good but it's not awful.
Good energy, fine instrumentals.. However… The vocalist seems to be able to hit the high notes and the low notes reasonably well…but with the mid-range notes he sounds extremely flat, and often so, to the point it was cringey to me.
RIP Hide!!! X Japan are so legendary it hurts!!! I mean, you don't fill Tokyo Dome to the max if you're not amazing! I know you enjoy BABYMETAL and they pay tribute in so many ways in so many songs

Him being a perfectionist, I couldn't imagine him not noticing the bad sound quality.
Extra Note: I find the original sound mix not that good but it's not awful.
Ok, wasn't expecting JoJo. Got me
Ppl don't realise x japan creates stories in all the songs.
Good energy, fine instrumentals..
However…
The vocalist seems to be able to hit the high notes and the low notes reasonably well…but with the mid-range notes he sounds extremely flat, and often so, to the point it was cringey to me.
As mentioned, sound is pretty bad. Should have been the real last live with sugizo and the piano/violin intro.
