Thanks Caleb. Another great vid. G9 user here and with the latest firmware I find it hard to complain about the autofocus considering the price point and everything else you get for the money. Sure I look at the A7Siii with longing, but that is a WAY more expensive camera, not to mention lens cost and weight. It's tough to compare the lumix line with the a much higher end sony, but it seems like everyone wants to. I'd take my G9 or a GH5 over the lower end sony's and canon's any day. Of course I wish lumix would change their focus system, but I feel like with this improvement they continue to hold the crown for best bang for your buck option for video. Thanks again.
Finally nailed the awful auto focus on my gh5m2.... Speed to - 3 and sensitivity to - 3. The irrating "pulsing" almost disappears and used the tracking mode ( the one area + didn't work for me). Thanks for these tutorials, they've enormously. 👍
I agree the Auto - Focus is definitely usable for those who need it for video, and was always usable for those who shot stills… If people were more honest they would see missed AF moments from Sony cameras too. I see that happen more than content creators are willing to admit, and the evidence is literally right there in their own videos… …
@S Tra Actually, maybe it is you who are the delusional one. Some of us just know what they are doing, and how to use their own equipment. I don’t have those issues, which is why I don’t whine about the AF… Film craft my friend, not everybody has it. RUclips is just the ultimate participation trophy, anyone can be a perceived winner… …
Yup shot a shoot today on the a7iii and the focus box was on her face the WHOLE TIME and yet not a single photo focused was in focus and instead the area below her was
I've used my Mk2 in a number of professional shoots. I've used it on the close up camera with the Panasonic 35-100 mm f2.8 and the Leica 50-200 f2.8-4. The results have been very good. I have been shooting concerts and dance shows. It hasn't been perfect, usually in every show there is one shot where it inexplicably looses focus, but because it is a multicam shoot there is always another camera that I can switch to. I shoot in 30 fps usually at f4.
first of let me thank you for finally seeing someone making a test with F1.2 Lenses. this way is the best to really test the camera auto-focus. the results for my taste are bad, I mean we are in 2022 and every other company have a better auto-focus system (by the way the Lumix-s1 and s5 are also really bad). I was really hoping to see improvements with the Mark II, but seeing from your video that the aren't any improvements at all. I also have the 42.5 F1.2 lens and with the original GH5 and I'm having a better pulsing results then from this video (shooting most of the time 1080 50/P, 1-Area, speed and sensitivity set to + 2) I'm really hoping that the GH6 will bring us the auto-focus system that we deserve. if not, I will probably switch to another mirrorless system after 8 years with all the MFT equipment that I have.
I thought these AF tests showed TERRIBLE results. Unusable. Thanks Caleb for doing this! He really highlighted just how bad the GH5-II AF actually is....perfectly.
I have both Panasonic and Sony gear and while I like Sony in a few, limited circumstances, it is the G9 that is first choice for most things. The Lumix AF for photography is sensational, and the Lumix stabilization just kicks the Sony to the curb. Then the Panasonic feature set is perfect for my needs - Sony always seems limited and frustrating in comparison. That is with the G9, and the GH5 M2 is even better.
I think the pulsing of the Christmas tree is too much. I usually set the focus speed to slow so the focus moves slower to the target and doesn't overshoot. Looks more like a natural manual pull. This is also great for focus transitions by taping on the screen. This has to take some time and a focus that just snaps from close to far and back is not always the best solution, even if the focus is perfect.
Great video. You did a fantastic job at showing how bad Lumix's DfD is in 2022. That pulsing is just not acceptable in this day and age. Terrible. Anyhoo,....was thinking about buying a GH5-II but you did a nice job at stopping me from doing that! Thanks!!
I agree,i recently got the m2 and use the 1 area with human. For the most part it works fine. I did however see the nasty pulsing when christmas lights were in the background as well. Vlog style i think its fine, but any type of broll or anything with lights in the back i find my self using the tap to focus and lock on.
I watched some videos on GH5M2 and GH6. Between them, the autofocus time for GH5M2 was way better. I wonder how come GH6 is a newer version but autofocus is slower. I am going to buy one of the two. Could I get an answer for autofocus time??
Yeah you can get away with that for the most part it felt to me, didn't really pick up on it unless I was staring at backgrounds. Watching you move about is distracting enough to not notice. Except for Christmas tree shot, you do notice it then, and maybe if i\m being kind, you can get away with it. I think I would just avoid ambient lights in the bg probably if it were a professional shoot, just to minimise distraction as much as possible! I'm surprised and quite pleased to see the progress - Still, Panny baby, don't be discouraged, keep going for the Phase Detect, tha's all we need right now, then you win the 'war'!
😂win the war! that's a good way to put it! yeah i would probably never use it on a talking head like that cuz i can't handle the pulsing but walking shots were more than ok in my mind.
G9, S5 and GH5 II autofocus is definitely usable in video. It IS behind the leaders no doubt. The reputation it has is not deserved though I understand most reviewers don’t spend enough time with the cameras to really dig into the settings to figure it out.
Waooo, very nice video, I thank you to share it. My englis is not good and I don't understand well. For me continuous AF is very important and I'd like to understand well. Is it true at 25p, GH5 MII uses the continuous AF in worse way than 50p or 60p? Thanks
@@CalebHoover I thank you, a last question please. If I shoot at 4K 50p day, people with black skin on the red ground in a sunny (in Africa), what profile do you suggest, beside V-Log with GH5 MKII? And how many ISO (usually)? Thanks
Only works if the speed is +3. My settings on the g95 and the GH5 mark II are -1 or -2 speed and +3 sensitivity but I use the (49 point on the g95) and the 225 point settings.
I have the G9 but bought a A7III and A6400 the sony's AF is just insane. It just kills me that in 2021 and even 2022 Lumix stays with the poor AF system. I'll wait and see if it's the same AF system on the GH6. If it is, I can't see the point in feeding a dead horse. I'll trade or sell my G9 and all my glass and go to Sony. Maybe the A7s III, Lumix really needs to lift it's game! If they would change their AF to Sony's standard. They would blow everything else out of the water, come on Lumix time for change!
The only problem with the a7III compared to the GH5 is the a7III records for 30 minutes then stops and it only records in 4K at 30 FPS. I was literally going to buy the a7III tomorrow then found this out. After using the GH5 now for the past 2 years I can’t let it go. I do get tired of hunting for focus and dreading being low light situations but the only way Sony seems to be able to match the other features the GH5 has means a minimal of another $1000 to spend above the GH5.
What are your thoughts from some of the tests in this video? Let me know below!
