- Class is in at Barry White’s Speed Shop. Five students from the local Hot Rod University volunteer to help Barry’s team turn a clapped-out ’70 Pontiac Le Mans into a brand-new GTO for the Silver Auto Auction in Portland, Oregon.
With just four weeks to complete the transformation, it seems like a good idea-until Barry finds the pitfalls of playing teacher and producing a Super Muscle Car at the same time.
There are speed bumps at every turn. It seems no one did the homework on GTO parts-the crucial front-end is missing in action. And the promise of a job to the best student turns the classroom into a Bullpen. The students split into A and B teams, creating a distraction just when Barry needs results.
If that isn’t enough, word is there is no money at the Portland auction. Barry’s favorite buyers aren’t coming. GTO 101 is shaping up for disaster.

In 1970 I bought a Roadrunner and my friend bought a GTO Judge. Often times we'd swap cars for a few hours and cruise/do a little stoplight action and, eventually head home. My RR was a raunchy, uncivilized rig with all motor, 4-sp, and not many amenities. The Judge was just the opposite....smooth, powerful, automatic Turbo 400.....the ram air engine was very definition of torque. The GTO was a very good vehicle!

@@jayjohnson4843 It's well known he does replica super muscle cars. Why do all this to a GTO when most people want those infamous vehicles done as restorations. He's making use of all the ordinary vehicles of that time period.

Counting Cars had the same problem with putting a GTO nose on a LeMans. You need to replace the whole front clip. Then its a LeMans Sport

They did a great job. I'm surprised they started with a 71 LeMans. I think the opinion among buyers was "Why pay more than $40,000 then have to tell your friends it's not even the right year much less a GTO?".

What a show really meant a'lot to me to see a 1971 Pontiac Lemans restored really took me back in time I own a GT-37 !!! I have owned since I was 18 36 yrs Needs to be redone mainly body panels !!! Interior carpet headliner have all been done !! Would like to send you a picture if possible !! By the way have you sold the one you built on the show !!!

funny thing is at the end of the presentation they flash between the restored car and the what was supposed to be the 1971 LeMans they bought originally. If you look close the "un-restored" car is a 1970 LeMans or maybe a Tempest. Suspect they had to buy another car (a 1970) to actually complete this messed up build.

Yeah, this show is all over the place.
Pontiac got rid of DeLoreon in '70, so they finally got a rear sway bar on the Goat (which wasn't to rival the Mustang, that was the Firebird's job). Otherwise, demand for Goats goes down after 1969. But if you find rusty front fender quarters, chances are the cowl is plugged up and not draining like its supposed to, hence the rot at the windshield. And most musclecars lose the rear window seal and rot at their base and fill the trunk with water that rots the trunk pans. As long as it doesn't reach the rear frame rails, you can save it relatively easy.
You don't know much about muscle cars if you don't know 1968 was the last year you could GTO a Tempest with a hood change (1969 Goats had different rear side marker lights). But looking at the dents and rot in that LeMans front end, replacing everything with GTO front end was a time saver anyway.
As for the free labor? If that's how they thought of themselves, then they missed entirely the part about they are competing for ONE job opening. Those who saw it only as a learning opportunity, got treated that way. Most days at work, you learn something new. Life is a learning opportunity. As for the missing nose mounts, didn't one of the students mention in the interview they fabricate mounts for anything?
How many GTO's did they look at that were crap, but had a good front end? Use one of those!!! Artificial drama or stupidity?

at 32:45 during the burnout in this video,it seems like some sort of electrical arc to the ground near the front oil pan...maybe its just the camera but i was fixated on it and asking myself what is that?...maybe i am seeing something that isnt there,,,beautiful car though
No GTO, unless the first 3 digits in the VIN are 242. Bet the buyers were pissed to find out it was a clone. Wow could have been The Judge for that matter. It's still a high level build for the times.
My 1st 3 cars were Pontiacs, the 2nd a 1968 LeMans that a classmate wrecked in 1970, caving in both sides. When I was finished with it, it to looked like a GTO! It had factory 4-speed, bucket seats and console, and a Pearl White interior. I put a Judge spoiler on the back and added a set of Anson slotted wheels and applied a multicoat 1970 Cadillac Clove Brown...What a looker it turned out to be, just like the true blue GTO of yours!

Great job barry teaching these guys the run the other way when they come across a boss like you they might want to work for ,nobody wants to do jumping jacks while they think about what they're going to do next or keeps on working and makes things worse than they already are because they can't stand to look at what they are doing and if it is going to fuck shit up all the while the only thing your boss is doing is go around stabbing the car with a screwdriver and crying about things well raising the stress level to where it's no fun working at all .but yeah there's no teamwork around because you don't even have time to talk to each other and maybe get to be a teammate of someone Barry has you elbowing out of the way because your so nervous about doing your job right and still getting fired because the owner looks at you sideways he might go off the rails of his roller coaster mood swings fuck the deadlines deadlines are for half-ass Builders good at hiding shit to make a deadline instead of building a car that was done right and didn't look like time had any Factor in its Construction

@Rodney Fowler As a custom build, I'm sure it will outperform any stock GTO of the day. That will make it valuable to a certain customer, one who is looking for that. But the difference in VIN# is worth a lot of money for collectors. 242 VIN cars will ALWAYS be worth more than a comparably built LeMans or Tempest clone.

Why always with fking drama? If it's to sell the show well the cars do that but why is the episode ALWAYS 4 weeks to turn it round? If you were any kind of good manager then you'd have wrecks lined up and quit with the stupid 4 week deadline. If there are that many auctions per year you don't need to rush it and cause yourself massive stress! LOVE the cars HATE the unneeded drama.

I totally agree, but this is a TV show in the first place. It would not sell without any drama added to it. You can be sure that most of it is faked as well, just to make it appeal more to viewers.
I just ignore it, watch the show, and admire these people who can deliver such awesome pieces of art :)

Wondering if high-dollar buyers want an authentic (Vin #) GTO instead of a clone. Just curious. Love the show!
If the car has been Restomod like this was, it's doubtful they care about Vin# authenticity. The Classic Restorations crowd however, would care very much.
they change the car names in some of these rebuilds but in this case for instance wouldn't the title still say le mans. if i paid money for a GTO I'd be pissed.

I know this is an old video but I'm hoping somebody can help me with a question I have. So they bought this as a Lemans, but they are selling it as a GTO. As far as I know they won't be able to change the car's title to show anything but Lemans. And if you were to do a search on the VIN # that would also certainly show it was never a GTO. So other than just some guy with money falling out of his pockets, how the hell can they "honestly" advertise and sell this car as a GTO? I know any buyer is responsible to do their own due diligence, but it seems like the auction house can't be able to lie about this crap, and would have to legally disclose this?
edit: Now that I've finished watching the entire video, I'm glad he had to take this one home. The couple that had that high bid has been on some of the other videos. If they ever see this video I bet they will be glad they didn't get that car. As far as this video went, it was NEVER disclosed to any potential buyer that this wasn't really a GTO, so it seems like the auction house and Barry were trying to bilk everybody on this car.
I've watched four episodes and they're not even counting the amount they pay their employees there barely making 15,000 to 20,000 for a months worth of work doesn't seem very rich to me
lets assume some other cars in the shop are sorted and either sold or resto'd for 'non-tv' clientelle to make some $$

I've always despised the raised rear look with the larger wheels in the back and smaller in the front. I like muscle cars not hot wheels.
What irritates me is these people always act like they are broke and getting ready to be out on the street. It's Barry's fault for going to a low budget auction
I always liked these cars because only they remained super powerful beautiful high quality cars and legendary and when I see a legend I put likes in spite of Madeleine and the year of release

Man, I'm 4 minutes into the video and they've already said a lot of wrong information about the LeMans (and GTO). Makes me wonder how much they really know about it, or how much they really love cars in general. Some people who don't like cars can still line up new panels really well.
(edit) Ok, now I'm 7 minutes in and I have to stop. "Do they make the parts to change it?" Really? They didn't really just get into a build like this and not already know the answer to that. Either this is an awful TV show for car guys, or these people aren't car guys.

@David Ellsworth! Because it's a Leman and they are calling it a GTO. I love it ( the car) and I give it a name Leman GTO.but Berry said that GM SWICH PARTS OF THE GTO BODY TO THE LEMAN!! The meaning of the word is Grand tourismo I forgot what the O stand for, and the name came from Ferrari, and name theory car FERRARI GTO!! I love the color, the stand, hp, and most of all the paddle shifters in a Pontiac Leman GTO or a Leman!! That is unique and unheard of and EPIC!!! It is a very nice, lovely and beautiful car. I myself would buy it. It's muscular and powerful. 457 hp!! I think it should have a couple more hp 666 to 700!! and he didn't mention the lb ft of tq too!!

In my opinion Chris has most stress and hardest job. But. as a team they persevere in adverse conditions and time restraints and turn out top highest quality cars. Like Chip Foose and Troy Trepanier
Barry isn't the type of boss that you'd ever want to have, that's why his employees work to do their job and get the money, but don't care much for him. He's a genuine a-hole on purpose. So here's a question: why is your *DESIGNER* trying to *find parts* for the cars that you get? Among other things, he's trying to find actual cars to start working on (sometimes), trying to design new features on it, looking for hard-to-find parts that they need (and Barry is constantly on him about something). What business do you know of that would have their designer doing so many tasks? Ridiculous business model.
Yeah him and his wife are real pieces of work. Couldn't stand them back then when the show was on air and now 18 years later re-watching them I still can't stand them

I can’t believe the cost of some of the work they have other people do! $7000 for someone to have a machine shop do a cpl hundred in machine work and then bolt new parts in a motor is fucking crazy! $4000 for a single color paint job when all the body work is done is equally as crazy!!!
