    Because of you guys I got brave and tried corn this year. Now I don’t have space to grow for a years worth anyway but I planted 15 plants (seeds) and every one came up and is doing great! They’re all over knee high too! I’m so proud of myself. I know it’s small and don’t amount to much. I promise ya I’ll surely enjoy it though. I’m gonna add the nitrogen again this week listening to your advice and I’ll do again when they tassel. Thank y’all so much. I really have had the most success listening to y’all. I ain’t got much but I’m proud of what I do have and thankful for folks like y’all who are willing to help. YEAH IM BLUBBERING ON!! HUSH IT MARK! BAHAHAHAHAHAHA 😂😂😂 😝Just wanted ya to know I “preciate” ya!
    Thanks again! God Bless ~Lisa

    we used to have huge corn roasts when they were ready. my uncle dug a pit and it took a day or two to get it full of coals. then the prepared, soaked, buttered, spiced corn wrapped in tin foil got buried in the coals ( use a new shovel and gloves - and watch the handle!). when you smelled it, it was ready and so good.
    going to try golden bantam, peaches and cream and good old silver queen for 2020. the fire pit is always ready!

    best corn growing video i ever watched, i was just planning out my corn patch in my garden, I'm in central FL , to early yet, but i like to plan ahead?
    i come from mountains of PA lots of corn.. so i was under the impression that 2-1/2 inch deep was the depth number.. and 6-8 inch apart, and rows of 18 inches, almost exactly like you did.. so i was reading the back of the seed packet for growing instructions... to see their recommended instructions.. nothing like i thought or you do, they say 2-3 foot row width, and 12 inch apart, and i thought that cant be right? so i was a bit baffled until i watched your video.. now that's what i was thinking !
    the proof is in the pudding.. i grew up in corn country, and the rows where never laid out that sparse... anyway thanks for confirming what i thought i knew...

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  3 года назад

      You can do it ! If you have a lot of wind, you can stake around your patch (about 3' high) and run strings through the patch randomly to give it something to lean on... You can even run the strings early on and let it grow up through them...

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 года назад +2

      amzn.to/2XHuI6L I know it is a little pricey but if you do the math, it is not really... 1 gallon is 128 oz... Mixed a DOUBLE the direction strength (1.5 oz) at 3oz per gallon of water, it still makes over 40 gallons of double strength Sevin for about $2 a gallon, and it will hold most gardeners for several years... This is also the 500 insect killer VS the regular 100 insect Sevin... // We usually just reapply after a couple rains... You will see that it sticks on the plants really well (much better than the powder)....

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 года назад +2

      On the second and third feedings, we put it between the rows... The third feeding, the corn is quite tall, but walking the rows helps rattle the tassels, so drop pollen down on the silks of the ears...

  • @FinznFowl82
    @FinznFowl82 3 года назад

    The problem with planting corn that dense is the leaves cover the silks of the cobs and a lot of them dont get fully pollinated. It's ok to plant 6 inches apart but the rows need to be further apart from my experience. I tried planting the rows 16" again this year because I dont have much space, some rows were even 24"... poor pollination again. Beautiful plants, the outside plants were all pollinated well, but the further toward the middle of the patch, the worse the pollination. I could see some leaves hanging right over silks, the leaf covered in pollen, the cob barely pollinated. I'll never plant my rows less than 24" again. I'd rather have 100 good cobs rather than 400 bad ones, which is what I have now.

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  3 года назад +2

      We have not had the pollination issues you mentioned, but we have always encouraged people to do what works best for them. Our corn harvest videos (several) are in the Gardening playlist if you are interested. We have always been pleased with our results. One thing you might try is "walking the rows" every few days while your corn is in full tassel 'n silk. As you brush the stalks with your arms, the pollen will be stirred up, and the leaves moved from atop the ears. It is an old practice (likely spawning the movie "children of the corn" - "he who walks between the rows") and quite effective...

    • @FinznFowl82
      @FinznFowl82 3 года назад

      @@BumbleBeeJunction I usually brush the tassels with a broom stick. I dont like breaking the leaves by walking the rows. I even have a shaker on a stick for top dressing lol. I've just never had luck planting them that close. Wish I could! Of course after it's all said and done I'm sure I'll do it again. I'm notorious for planting stuff too close. Thanks for the reply, great videos, I've enjoy watching.

      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 года назад +3

      Your case is really one for gypsum (which breaks up and conditions clay) and organic matter like peat or something like perlite / vermiculite... I would mix the three... Then hoe out my rows, put down the seed, and put our mix over them in the trench... you mix will go further this way...

    • @BumbleBeeJunction

      Could really be any number of reasons... Too much water, not enough water, not enough fertilizer, too crowded, cold spell, hot spell... It is almost impossible to guess without knowing more about your situation... Corn is pretty tough though... Odds are it will kick over and take off again... Just don't over love it to death... • @BumbleBeeJunction

      For corn, it is not all that crucial to keep it sprayed when it is young UNLESS you have cut worms, etc... But it will last through at least a couple good rains, or a week or so of steady watering... // Man that is a trick... I try to con my 4' 10" wife into sneaking in there... But more often, I just have to carefully walk between the rows with a bucket and do the best I can... I haven't figured out a great trick for that yet... LOL But it needs to get on there, so we just do what we can....

    • @BumbleBeeJunction

      Good question! Sweet corn produces its own sugars, but it is our job to catch it just right at harvest between when the ears produce the sugar, and when it is converted to more bland tasting starches... That is usually between 19 and 21 days after the ear silks appear... Then we boil (blanch) and cool (in ice water) the corn to kill the enzyme that converts the sugar while not overcooking the corn...

    I have a lot of corn stalks yellowing. I think its due to very high rain when it was about 6 inches tall. Will nitrogen fix that you reckon?

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  6 лет назад +1

      It sure should... But do it in stages... At least 2 or 3 fertilizings rather than 1... The plants would be weakened, so more subject to nitrogen burn in the sun... Best to divide what you would put on them into 2 or 3 doses with a few days and waterings in between... My guess is that it will pull through unless its really hard off... Good luck !

      Since we are not talking about a root crop or anything edible touching the ground, if you or someone you know has chickens, you might be able to get some used coop cleanout bedding or something you could use on it... Any other plant, not a super idea, but corn can take a good bit of nitrogen... I'd just add it in stages still, but if you need an organic boost, some form of manure would be your fastest bet....

    Hello. I have a question. A lil info. I been trying to direct sow hybrid sweet corn seeds for 7 months now with very poorly successful germination and emergence. I've done Pioneer corn quite successfully. I asked someone in my island (in the Caribbean) what they think. It was said that usually our islanders stay away from sweet corn because they seem to have issues direct sowing. When I've place the kernels in water, they all sprout. In the soil it's a no no.they
    recommended I plant in seedling tray starts and transplant. I'm hesitant to buy more seeds. But I see your video and I suppose you planted with a planter. Any advice? Thanks

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  3 года назад +1

      It sounds like the ground may have a (natural or chemical) pre-emergent grass or weed killer (corn is essentially a broadleaf grass) in it... In which case, it would appear things are not germinating... No matter the reason though, we need to find you another answer... You might try a small plot first (as a test) and see if you can lay open rows with a hoe and add some compost or commercial soil to the troughs... I would then plant into the compost / commercial soil... Then once the plants were 18" tall or so, I would pull your soil back up over the compost and around the plant (for stability in the wind)... You could also perhaps try a shallow raised bed (say 8 by 8) where you had control over the top soil for planting into, and leave the other soil below... I would also have your soil tested (especially for PH) to look for potential causes... If you still have trouble, let me know, and we will continue the hunt for answers... I am glad to help if I can...

    My question is how do you do your watering during a dry season?

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 лет назад

      We were very careful choosing this property, on one of the main considerations was water... The creek runs the valley floor between the foothills and is less than 20' from the gardens... We also have a spring filled pond that his never dropped more than 6" in the worst of the heat... We have a drill pump (cheap and easy) for hard times... But we also water from our household city water as well... One thing we are hoping to do is put in a rain catchment system this coming year or maybe yet this Fall... We have an elevated back porch that would collect from 1/2 the roof and store water 12' above ground level, and that would give us a measure of pressure... We water several different ways though... Just whatever it takes to get it done... Watching the weather so we dont needlessly water is one thing we do religiously as well...
