    That was extremely helpful. So far, of all the vids I've tried to learn piano, I like yours the best. I like that you provide theory, and I like also your practice videos where you do things like tell us to find a note and we play along with you--and that you even put some music in the background to make it fun. Looking forward to working my way through all of your work. I hope you keep going. I think you could build up a big channel here. Also, kudos for how professionally produced these videos are. I like that tagline you have as well at the start: "Let's do it."

    I think your videos are very well structured and one of the highest quality content i could find on yt.
    I'm pretty sure your channel will grow very well if you hold on that quality!
    I struggle to understand augmented/sus chords in terms of when to use them.
    Mby one day an idea for a video :)

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback i'm glad they help.
      In terms of when to use those chords, yes perhaps I could tackle that in a video at some point, will put it in the ideas list. The way I learned was really through spotting we they have been used in music I was playing. I think that's the most authentic way to get a solid sense of it, like the way you can become fluent in a language, through experience. But just quickly, a sus 4 chord quite often gets used to move to the major (Sus means suspended) So instead of just playing G major, you can add a movement from Gsus 4 to G major. The sus sounds 'suspended' and the major sounds more stable. That's one common use way anyway but you need to hear it really with an explanation.

    theory is so confusing for me. I'm working on a melody where d, f, g and a are sharped, but c is natural. But according to the order of the sharps, c should be sharped, but it doesn't sound right. But if I keep it natural, there is no key that it makes since in? Am I breaking a "rule" ?

  • @worldofparker
    @worldofparker 6 месяцев назад

    very useful for me. It strikes me that we come at music with bias, so not all notes are equal, we need phrases to resolve on certain notes, our brains should accept any note, then again if everything was equal, then music wouldn't be music it would be sound. Different cultures presumably have unrecognisable keys and alternative note resolution ideas. You've got me thinking, thankyou.

    I don't understand when someone says something is in the key of blank for 3 reasons:
    1) What about all the modes like Lydian, Dorian, Mixolydian, etc?
    If a song is in a mode do they say the mode along with the key like C Lydian, C Dorian, etc.? Or do they just say the song is in C and it can include all the modes and you just have to figure it out?
    2) What about the different chord variations like augmented, diminished, suspended, etc. chords?
    Can you not play these types of variation chords because they don't fit in the key if the chords include notes outside of the key or the song (chromatic notes)?
    For instance, if an augmented or diminished, etc. chord has a sharp or flat in it. But the notes of the key or scale of the song don't contain these sharps or flats, will the chord sound bad?
    Or you can still use these chords for the key of the song even if they include some chromatic notes?
    After watching this video I think you said it's ok to use these types of chords.
    3) What about when a song changes key during the song?
    So many songs change keys. And certain bands like the Beatles and Radiohead make key changes a normal part of their songs.
    So if a song changes keys why don't the musicians say this song is in the key of C then C minor, or F then A#, etc? Why do they always only say the song is in the key of blank (naming one note/key) even if the song changes keys?

      A half step means the key directly next to the og one. So a half step from C, would be the next black key up, C#. A whole step is two half steps. So a whole step from C would be, (skip the black key) the next white key, D

  • @blackefeltsch7459

    I still have trouble understanding this. In your G Major example when you showed the triads why did you play F sharp instead of F and why do the spacings differ between them. G > B > D has 4 steps and then 3. But from A > C > E it's reversed to create a minor chord. I don't get how minor chords can be in a major scale. It's very confusing.

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  Год назад

      F sharp is the 7th note in the G major scale not F. The chords of G major only use the notes from the G major scale so that includes the F sharp.
      If an A minor chord uses the notes A C E, all 3 of those notes are also in the G major scale and so you can find an A minor chord within the G major scale. You can find it in other scales too that also have those 3 notes like the C major scale.

    What I am missing is the actual difference between keys. Yes, there are major and minor keys. But WHY would a composer write something in C major instead of say G major, they're both major so WHY prefer one over the other. Same for minor of course, does a piece in D minor sound different then the same piece in A minor? I mean yes, the notes have all shifted (by the same amount), they're both minor keys, so why one over the other. Do we humans percieve (feel) a piece of music differently when we hear it in they E instead of F? THAT's what I would love to know.
