  • Do you struggle to be present? Well, Albert Camus and his philosophy are a great place to start - here are 4 existentialist principles for being present.
    --
    Albert Camus was a French philosopher who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957. He became the second-youngest recipient in history. Some of his most popular books are The Stranger, The Plague, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Fall, and The Rebel.

    1. Focus on the small things
    2. Just be yourself
    3. Stop looking for happiness and meaning
    4. Live with passion

    Just finished reading The Plague. I’ve never read Camus before. One of the best books I’ve read in my life. It’s very appropriate for these times of Covid. It’s as if he was here during Covid, living it. Highly recommended. With acute observation skills, he reveals the many varieties of psychological states such as lies, denial, anxiety, hopes, dreams, anger, desolation and loneliness people have in times of a plague. His writing is masterful and believe it or not, the book is not depressing. The story is rich in subtle details and flows perfectly.
    Very helpful video, very good presentation. Turtleneck Philosopher, the world needs you. Keep up the most excellent work Gratitude! ❤️

    So Camus’ point to “don’t aspire to have a different life” bc that means you miss the life that is here and now seems to contradict his point on “live with passion” which says when you strive to a goal you are more focused and living with excitement/enjoyment. To strive for a goal means you are aspiring to a different life.
    The only way I can reconcile this seeming contradiction is to include the following idea: “living with passion” means *pursuing* a goal (but not aspiring to it, i.e. not being attached to the goal outcome). That way you live more focused and thus more “passionately” but do not miss the only life you actually have - what is now.

    • @TurtleneckPhilosophy
      @TurtleneckPhilosophy  2 года назад +13

      Yes, that's a great observation. I would add also that “living with passion” means pursuing a goal but not aspiring to an identity claim associated with any point of the pursuit. So for example, in making art or music, the mindset here is in aspiring to associate yourself with the process (the verb: making art or music) and not the outcome (the noun: becoming an 'famous artist' or 'mainstream musician' or whatever).
      ...I thinks this is basically what you're saying as well in your second paragraph? haha

  • @amansingh-lj3tg
    @amansingh-lj3tg 2 года назад +8

    Hi Everyone, I'm writing this coz I need some clarity on the second point - "just be yourself"
    Something I hear Jiddu Krishnamurti often say, along the lines of "Do not try to achieve or arrive somewhere" or "Don't try to be better, there is nothing else to be", likewise.
    My problem with this reasoning of "just be yourself" is, what if I am a person with negative traits? What if I use people subconsciously and play mind games? I don't want to be that version of myself. I want to be better, ofc.
    We might not realize it in the ordinary course of life, but since early childhood, we start developing many devices and character traits to interact with the world. Both overly-protected and negligent environments will force us to develop negative coping mechanisms in childhood. We might become manipulative in wanting attention or become aloof and withdrawn. From what I understand, this is just the start and with each interaction with the outside world we put on new defences and responses.
    These traits harden over time, and without a course correction, could create an unpleasant person with many character flaws - unkind, narcissistic, low self-worth, etc. If I don't dedicate time to unlearn these responses, I'll keep hurting people around me and even go on to impart these to my children, directly or indirectly.
    This is my problem - How can I be my flawed self? Why should I not work to better it? How does "Just Be Yourself" fit into this line of thinking? Thanks for reading : ) All the best!

    • @nealwagner7432
      @nealwagner7432 2 года назад +3

      I would argue that being your true self means that you are always in a process of self discovery, change, and evolution. Thus it is natural to be both your true self and be in the process of working out flaws, problems, and fears.

    • @luizaiwass2006
      @luizaiwass2006 2 года назад +1

      You can think i a way that this "negative traits" are just that, traits, but understood in a wrong way, and acted in a wrong way.
      If you are in a certain way, you cant just start to repress this, or you will just blow up in a bizarre destructive way, you cannot just remove something you have that maybe is, as well, a good part of you.
      But for example, if you are a "violent" person, you can think "what this violence really is in me?" and you can start to see that maybe this "violence" iis just a high sence of will, or a some kind of strength that you have in your life but you are applying to a wrong thing, or in a wrong way.
      Maybe this violence is something that make you dont give up in things, maybe is something that grants you a good firmness on what you stand for, but because you don't understand that place that this "violence" have in your life, you end up apliyng this trait to something "bad", or just to something that dont work well.
      Understanding the real place and action of that "violance" can make this a more equilibrated trait, and analysing other things in you, you can find out that you have as well some kind of "kindness" that is the "opposite" of that violence, and because you dint knew that good thing in you, you ended up apliyng that violence over the place that the "kindness" that you didn't know should be acting. And now that you know both things you are more "in peace" with yourself and in a more equilibrated way.
      Again, this is just a exemple, but you can use this interpretating to see other traits that you still see as "negative" but at the end maybe they are just still "out of place" and with their complements unknow inside you.
      Try to think that you already have everything right there, but you still need to understand those things that you have, in a better way.
      Because at the end, repressing something just turns to make it worst, is like having a traumatized dog and stead of understanding him and treating him well with what he can be, you put in a chain and he just get crazily violent and destructive.
      Is like a Nietzsche frase: "Be careful when you cast out your demons that you don’t throw away the best of yourself.”

      Saved mine, and I never even heard it from him (or anybody). Convergent evolution of Albert's ideas with my own findings about life is reassuring. I think it's the legit way to live. Like it's literally the answer.

    The question that Steve Jobs asked himself to find his passion was something like “What makes my heart sing?”

  • @slowfudgeballs9517
    @slowfudgeballs9517 Год назад +7

    Came to this conclusion separately after a full steam collision with the black pill. I ran through nihilism so hard I went right through it into the white pill after 6 years of "medically resistant depression." The evidence of convergent evolution in Albert Camus ideas with my own findings is a great reassurance.
    I literally philosophized my way out of suicide and I was probably correct all along. Life doesn't need an afterlife, if it does, that's a bonus. It's way more likely whatever souls are, is all one "force" aka god himself is puppeting us all to experience the universe, so enjoy it, you volunteered for the suffering. We just aren't allowed to realize that in our puny limited bodies because it detracts from the experience.
