@Leo Abrahams Pretty much some clever politics by the Australian Federation. Oceania traditionally plays-off for a place in the World Cup with tough opposition (e.g. a Central or South American team), so the Aussies worked out the path is easier via Asia and managed to get moved. Meanwhile the All Whites cruise through qualifying against average opposition since Australia left, then hit the brick wall of a tough, seasoned team (e.g. Mexico, Peru, Uruguay) that they can't quite match up to.
arsenalfutballclub Also with the FFA head and there are many other videos of them talking to bigger personalities from bigger clubs if youve been watching copa90 over the years
This was Copa90's first trip to New Zealand - its because of your suggestions in the comments that we visited, so let us where you think we should go next and what stories we should be covering.
+herr h-fyr Hey man shit. I met my current partner in Norway and lived there for half a year! Might be moving back to Kristiansand in the future. Are there many Kiwis over there that you know of?
When I heard about A-League I saw the team of Wellington and then I started to follow them. They play in league of another continent and I think it is quite and unusual in football. They have to stay in this professional league. Cheers from Hungary #SaveTheNix
Not just another country, another confederation Oceania. The Asian Football Confederation hate it, and eventually take it out on Australian football for having them. 😬
I had the privilege to live in New Zealand for a few years as a teenager, and as a Brit going to watch the Phoenix was a great way to get your football fix. They're my second team and I still wear my Nix shirt with pride when I'm out and about. That 2010 season holds fond memories for me and the Marco Rojas game mentioned against the Victory is still clear as day in my mind. The Phoenix along with the World Cup squad that year really helped the game in the country, and if New Zealand lose their only professional team it would be disastrous for the sport. So great to see Copa90 cover this story! #SavetheNix from rainy Essex!
As a Kiwi, this really moved me seeing Copa90 cover this story. Without the Nix, football would be dead in our Rugby driven country. Hopefully, with the exposure this story is getting, football in New Zealand can finally be on the up, as we try to be recognised as more than just a Rugby nation. Thanks Copa90 and #savethenix
Ikr. without this team football would die in this country and as a kiwi and a big football fan I know that new zealands football would be gone for at least 4 world cups
James Jarvis still got the youngsters coming through though like Rojas in this video. Singh to Bayern, and soon enough Cacace will be off with a dozen clubs probably after him.
James Jarvis. they’re not a useless football club they’ve brung life into New Zealand football without it sarpreet Singh wouldn’t be at Bayern, Libby cacace would still be stuck in his local Sunday league team...
I'm only a youngster from Auckland, New Zealand but I've lived for this club since it's existence so am very proud to say SAVETHENIX to give me a thriving future in football. That's Copa90 for covering this topic, very much appreciated.
#savethenix, sending my support to you fans, love from Barnet Read more Only joking, hope the 'nix' (what a fucking dumb name) die. Shit fans, shit club
Best of luck, we're behind you in Ireland! Lets hope everything turns out ok, as a League of Ireland fan I understand the struggles of football and how much it can mean to the clubs community! Lets hope you succeed! #SaveTheNix
Thank you so much for covering this story Eli and Copa90; football is fairly underground here, and we only just got the national league on tv for the first time in ages. The Phoenix are so huge for the football community here so to loose them would be a massive calamity on the sport here. Thank you #savethenix
+Joel Wilson I know! I saw for myself! Just keep supporting NZ football and hopefully one day football will really take off like it has on our side of the ditch!
It's worked. Back in February, the FFA granted Wellington a maximum 10-year extension. Basically, it starts as a 4-year extension, but then has two conditional extensions after that to total 10 years.
It's so cool to see such a big channel come and do a piece on my club, the Wellington Phoenix! Nz isn't very well known for it's football history as it isn't our number one sport but this club at the moment is the biggest chance to help Nz grow as a footballing nation, with it being the only professional team we need the Nix to stay around to help develop our young players, the more help we can get the better it'll be overall #COYN #savethenix
this is what I love about football it isn't the number of trophies your team has, but how it makes people come together to make a community..... #savethenix
Football is my life, without it, theres no point in living for me, and if Wellington Phoenix do leave the A-League, football will not grow in this country. I moved from Liverpool to Christchurch and i can tell u right now that its really hard to be a football fan because of rugby, but there is so many people in my school who love football and watch the Phoenix and Australia would be doing football a great disservice if they get rid of New Zealand's only professional football team. The FFA know full well that the Phoenix dont get big crowds because there is only 4.5 million people in New Zealand with most of them being rugby fans, so it would be a real shame if they were to fold. I honestly think football could take over as the #1 sport in New Zealand because they could have more teams to go into the A-League from all around the country, besides New Zealand's own semi-pro league, they could have a team in Christchurch, Dunedin, Blenheim, Hamilton, Napier, Auckland and have North Island vs South Island derbies and things like that. It will generate money for the clubs to keep running and generate money for A-League contribution, as well as TV viewing, good enough stadiums, and facilities around the stadiums. They would have to make sure theres a lot of sponsors for the teams to generate even more money to make profit and be stable. Hopefully this will happen, the sooner it does the better for all parties and the better for New Zealand football.
Thanks so much copa90 for doing a story on the nix!! I watched this video about 4 times and just can't think of what Wellington would be without the Nix. Since you asked the ffa about the license I think they many of had to think more about the subject and may give the nix more of a chance of getting a 10 year license. Thanks, #savethenix
Problem with Wellington is that their stadium is way too big for them. Even though they've got good fanbase (NZ standards) it always looks empty. They need a rectangular football stadium that holds around 30k. It would be perfect for them #SaveTheNix from Sydney.
+Trollzy they mainly play in Auckland if outside of Wellington. Dunedin has the under cover stadium, but it's not perfect because the city of Dunedin is tiny, it's hundreds of kilometres and a body of water away from Wellington.
Eu como brasileiro que ama o futebol australiano, estou muito feliz que em 2022 o Wellington Phoenix continua como uma grande equipe de seus país #GOPHOENIX
It will be great to expand A-Leagues further. Making it 16 teams in the A-Leagues, Mens and Womens Then 2nd division etc *2024/25- Canberra United and Auckland joining the A-Leagues as 13th and 14th clubs. *2025/26- 15th and 16th A-Leagues Clubs to be announced soon.
As an Australian football fan and a follower of Australian football I think that the A-League needs to be not only improved in standard but also in size. For those who don't know, the A-League consists of only ten clubs and half make the finals. I think to encourage the sport in both Australia and New Zealand the A-League needs at least 2 or 4 clubs and I would certainly welcome a second (or maybe third) club from NZ. As you can see in the video the support for the Phoenix is almost unanimous among all A-League fans. This is a massive step backwards for football, not only in NZ and the A-League, but also worldwide. #savethenix
th a league is set to expand to 12 teams for the 19/20 season but the majority and favourite bids are for sydney and melbourne to get a 3rd team each, the only bids not from sydney and canberra, wollongong, a second brisbane team and ipswich (essentally another brisbane team as well)
+panzer9248 I wish we would. There's not even much justification for having the OFC exist tbh. we get f all international fixtures (3 last year) and they're against the bottom feeders of FIFA
Melchior Beta As Australian I would love to see New Zealand face Australia in the Asian cup. And another thing if Wellington ever finish in the top 2, they won't be able to play in the AFC champions league. Which is a big blow considering how big the tournament is and the prize money is pretty good as well.
I was there at the game when Eli was reporting. We went up and had a talk to him and asked him what he was doing. It's so good to see a major football show backing our local team. #SaveTheNix
Cheers to Eli and +Copa90 for the coverage - really humbling to get your support. I grew up in Wellington and live in Auckland these days, but still fly down for most of the games. I think the Nix are the core of the conflict between money and the good of the game. From the FFA viewpoint, we don't bring in the biggest crowds (though we aren't the smallest), we develop Australian players but not as many as the aussie based teams, and we aren't a huge TV audience. But what we do have is a financial stable club (something pretty unique in the A league), a passionate supporters base, and the footballing dreams of a country. So yes, you can take away the club, but it's simply not in the spirit of the game. #savethenix from Auckland NZ
NZ football and this story often gets overlooked amongst the never ending feed of amazing football stories around the world! So a massive shout out to you guys leaving comments and insisting we head out there! Was an absolute pleasure meeting the mighty Yellow Fever and the Nix players & management and a massive thankyou to everyone for helping us tell the story! This video means Copa90 and I have ticked off our first ever proper Oceania story, which ticks off the last of our confederations to cover! But it will be by no means the last! Tatiyana the winner of our In Search Of competition will be bringing another story from this continent very soon so if theres a football story you know about, anywhere from Solomon Islands to Fiji LET US KNOW and Copa90 and Tatiyana will be heading out there! #SAVETHENIX
A story on Roy Krishna could be quite good. Fiji player playing for the Phoenix and how NZ football has helped his game develop along with being able to play for the only professional club in Oceania
+Eli Mengem I think it's a little unfair the Oceania club champions always have to playoff against the hosts in the world club cup, even after Auckland's heroic run to the semis in 2014. A feature on them and the OFC champions league would be interesting.
We're now far from saved, thanks to Football Federation Australia. We got the 10 years, but a review of the "metrics" mentioned in the video will happen after the 4 years (after the 2019-20 season), then 3 years and 3 years. With poor performances and the biased Australian media, they still use those metrics against us. And despite us being last, we're far from the biggest embarrassment. The FFA (and David Gallop in the video) is the biggest embarrassment of the league, metrics for ALL clubs are declining thanks to him and his cronies, but we're being used as the scapegoats to end up making them look better by kicking us out.
Alpaca Jones it’s embarrassment. Let’s play Wellington at 7pm NZ times on a Sunday night & complain that the crowd is poor and the ratings back in Australia are low! How can they get ratings when most of their supporters are watching Sky TV NZ in another country?! 🙄 There is always the argument about why Australia should help a rival nation develop its football. NZ are in another confederation these days so they are hardly a rival. Having a professional football club in NZ means we are helping the game as a whole right. When NZ were at the World Cup in 2010 I found myself very attached to them because they were basically players from my league, the A-League! Is it a bad thing for wanting New Zealanders to discover football like I did as an Australian?
#SaveTheNix From up here in Auckland! Thank you guys for making a video on this, really appreciate it! Football is growing in NZ, we can't stop now. COYN.
Copa90: Wellignton Phoneix is New Zealand's Only Proferssional Club Auckland City FC, who were fourth place in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup and is also professional: Am I a joke to you
Wellington has gotten a reputation as being the best away trip in the A-league. You get treated like guests rather than adversaries. Have made life long friends from 2 trips over there! The problem is that the FFA are always shunting their matches to the 5pm Australian time timeslot on a Sunday. This is 7pm on a Sunday in NZ, hardly a decent time for people to drink hard & get into the football when they have to get up for work the next morning. The FFA are saying that the Nix don't have enough club members to be sustainable. They need to understand that the NZ sporting culture is totally different to Australia. Buying memberships is simply not done in rugby. Even now the Nix have a larger membership base than the Wellington Hurricanes rugby team who just won the Super Rugby competition. Playing at the cavernous Cake Tin is hardly ideal, but until the Nix can get their own stadium like Hutt Rec up & running, it will have to do.
this makes me so happy as I am a nix fan who watches each game every week with my father we would both be truly devastated if we were not in the a league next year. Thankyou Copa 90 #SAVETHENIX
I live in NZ and am a huge Arsenal fan I have to get up and watch them at 3 in the morning. The Phoienix is a great team. A couple of years ago they beat west ham. Without them NZ football would get even worse.
+Harry Peterson He is Australian (think born in Brisbane). Not sure where he is actually based now but he wouldn't be there very often because of Copa90!
I live and breathe the Wellington Phoenix, which is often hard to do because of matters on the field, but this season with there being a good chance of us being booted from the league and therefore not existing as we know it is excruciating. Thank you Eli and the rest of Copa 90 for this video. #SaveTheNix
The Phoenix are better run than numerous Australian A League clubs. They get good crowds for a very small city, but the people in power don't care. They're happy to destroy the Phoenix, and NZ football. Wellington average 8,700 per game (official figures) and the city has a population of 200,000. Compare that to Perth, who also average 8,700 fans per game, and the city has a population of 1.8 million.
fox loves playing on the xenophobia of australians if fox had there way all the teams would be in sydney and melbourne cause derbies the most reecent expansion makes that clear
#savethenix really great piece really shows how this club has become an integral part of some of our lives. I've missed 2 hone games since day one and expect to see many more in the future. #savethenix
#SaveTheNix From Singapore Although I Live In Wellington, New Zealand. You Are My Phoenix My Only Phoenix You Make Me Happy When Skies Are Grey You’ll Never Notice How Much We Love You So Please Don’t Take My Phoenix Away.
Thank you Copa90! I'm from NZ myself and to lose this club would be the worst thing to happen to New Zealand football. I watch the Nix every week and not having a professional team from my own country to the support would suck big time. #savethenix
Love seeing stuff about the A-League of course, really awesome to see our league broadcasted to a channel with over a million subs #savethenix #itoldyouso

From a Los Angeles Galaxy fan, #SaveTheNix
I'm from New Zealand and I've been waiting for this for a long time! It was worth waiting
#SaveTheNix Wellington, Great video guys.
YES I'm from New Zealand an it's huge for some of us, thanks so much
1MILLLLLION SUBS CONGRATS GUYS
+Enis Simsik thanks Enis
As a NZ watching Copa 90 since 90k i'm SOOO HAPPY YOU DID THIS EP
People always say that rugby dominates in New Zealand, but in my school there are 20 odd football teams but only 7 rugby teams
Really cool seeing Copa 90 with 1 mil subs, remember them popping up on suggested channels in 2013 with about 10k. Well done chaps.
Fun fact:Auckland city came third in the 2014 FIFA club World Cup
thank you Copa90 for making this video hopefully The club will still be there in a few years
bro thats me and my mate in the background. Im in the blue and yellow pumping my fist in the air 3:27
Aww such a cutie back then
I a proud phoenix fan from Wellington and I go to every game at Westpac
Great that they stayed!
Great video. Eli your life must be great, going to all these places to report on Football. Brilliant.
According to "The Guardian" (UK newspapers) the nix got their 10 year contract. The Nix have been saved!
There is always the argument about why Australia should help a rival nation develop its football.
Thanks Copa 90 I'm a huge phoenix fan and I go to every game

From a West Ham supporter
#SaveTheNix From up here in Auckland! Thank you guys for making a video on this, really appreciate it! Football is growing in NZ, we can't stop now. COYN.
Copa90: Wellignton Phoneix is New Zealand's Only Proferssional Club
Auckland City FC, who were fourth place in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup and is also professional: Am I a joke to you
Couldnt even win the chatham cup last year lol
Auckland City aren't considered a professional club
as a person fromnew zealand who supports the pheonix, i'm very happy that you guys have put this video out
+Mitchell Wall thanks Mitchell #SavetheNix

It's ok now we have signed for 10 more years ☺
AJdizzle No it's not, we're back to square one.

Millwall supporter here, gotta support good ol' Paul Ifill, #SaveTheNix
Ifill is the clubs biggest legend
+catandfishfc He was great for us
Eli is one of the main reasons why I watch these as soon as they come out
Wellington has gotten a reputation as being the best away trip in the A-league.
Playing at the cavernous Cake Tin is hardly ideal, but until the Nix can get their own stadium like Hutt Rec up & running, it will have to do.
the membership model is a southern AFL thing which the league states only really started pushing in the 2000's
this makes me so happy as I am a nix fan who watches each game every week with my father we would both be truly devastated if we were not in the a league next year. Thankyou Copa 90 #SAVETHENIX
well they are still here and it is 2020
thank-you so much coppa 90 I love this club. so it was great to see you do this for us
Here after Phoenix were granted a lifetime membership in the A-league!
As a New Zealander and a very big football fan, I would like to thank you so much for spreading awareness and trying to save our club #SaveTheNix
I live in NZ and am a huge Arsenal fan I have to get up and watch them at 3 in the morning. The Phoienix is a great team. A couple of years ago they beat west ham. Without them NZ football would get even worse.
+Harry Peterson Exactly! So make sure you love the nix the way you love Arsenal! Local football is everything!
Do you live in NZ?
+Harry Peterson He is Australian (think born in Brisbane). Not sure where he is actually based now but he wouldn't be there very often because of Copa90!
+AusSpurs No I mean Eli
Harry Peterson Yes I know, thats who I was talking about.
#savethenix
guys do the Edinburgh derby
That would be amazing, the hearts tickets are sold out though so they'd have to sit in the hibs end which means wearing a gas mask.
As a proud wellingtonian im stoked that you made a vid on this!! #savethenix !!!
From an ATL UTD fan #savethenix
Thanks for making this to let people know my football struggles

#SaveTheNix from New York
Thank you Copa90! I'm from NZ myself and to lose this club would be the worst thing to happen to New Zealand football. I watch the Nix every week and not having a professional team from my own country to the support would suck big time. #savethenix
#savethenix from Enfield. we know what's it like to have a football community.
Love seeing stuff about the A-League of course, really awesome to see our league broadcasted to a channel with over a million subs #savethenix #itoldyouso
