    I used to make stained glass and learned very quickly I did not want to do repairs. I think that for most people your advice is dead on. :)

    I am totally WIGGED OUT! Hahahhaha! Thanks…I could have used this a couple months ago. I was given a ring to resize…I used a rawhide mallet and tapped it on my ring mandrel… It promptly split at the solder seam. So, I told the lady I'd fix it. It had a SHELL for a setting. I put it in sand with water and put heat guard on it. Well, didn't work. The shell cracked all over. I finally found a similar shell in a russia! It came, I fixed the ring, shaped the shell and set it. What a hassle! I learned my lesson about sizing a ring with any stone in it… Oh…it was a ring she'd bought back in the 40s from an American Indian. It had wonderful stamping and shape to it. He was obviously a pro…I AM NOT A PRO! I am so very pleased that she accepted the ring and has been wearing it ever since! Of course…I did not charge her for my blunder… So, again, thank you for your tips and for sharing your knowledge… I'll know better in future! >^..^< Meow Cow

      See! This is why I hate repairs. I am not a repair shop - I do one of a kind pieces. When someone wants a ring resized, or chains repaired or earrings fixed, I send them to a jeweler WHO DOES repairs. I'm supporting my local jewelry community AND avoiding work that I'm not getting paid for AND avoiding work that I don't want to do. Glad you learned your lesson without too much pain, Cat! I once had a STRANGER ask me to repair her ring. (I was an idiot!) She said it was silver. I returned a molten lump of pot metal to her and left her with these words: "here's a quarter for you to buy another gumball ring". Actually, I didn't say that but, I wish I had! Wigged out - hah! I Thanks Kat. Happy day to you.

    Thank you this was very informative, im hoping the same technique will work on 14k

    • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
      @NancyHamiltonJewelry  2 года назад

      It will Natale. The Vickers Hardness of 14K yellow gold is 140 HV while Sterling is 75 HV so, you will meet with more resistance as 14k yellow gold is harder. Make sure your metal is annealed. Good luck Natale! PS: 14K white gold is 230 HV. Hard stuff!!!

    Hi nancy here in England, very new to jewellery making literally about 9 days!! Making a basket setting today and loosing my mind a little couldn't get its soldered onto ring shank, I had help from my auntie who is also coming along for the journey, we are having our moments to say the least!! But reading your website earlier your words really helped, we are new and will literally produce a less than perfect object but hey we need to keep going, just hearing that we've all been there helps!! so thank you for your words of inspiration. I hope and desperately need any video on measuring and making a basket setting I was making a single basket today 4 prongs it's a heavy ring, keep up the good work power to all the newbies and praise for all the videos you do 👍🏻😊

      Welcome Tina and Auntie, to the jewelry world. I made a video with Craftsy on how to make basket settings. Here's the link: www.craftsy.com/ext/Nancy-LTHamilton_10201_F. You started with a tough setting! In my video, we start simply and move up. It might help. Thanks so much and the best of luck to you. Be patient and keep practicing! Thank you. N

    This was a fantastic video and oh-so helpful to me. And perfect timing. I have a SS ring without a stone that I need to cut to enlarge it and you reaffirmed what I had guessed at. And showed exactly how to do it. THANKS SO MUCH. And I love your wig. I wore hair extensions for a couple years because I have the thinnest hair ever. Loved them but they really tore up what little hair I had so now I just have long and VERY fine thin hair. But I loved your wig and am jealous. It looks great. Keep making these great videos. You so rock and are totally groovy my friend.

      Thanks Bobbi! Glad the video showed up in time. I too have really thin, sparse hair and am looking for a way to get back some of my glorious mane. That was a cheapy wig, that I wore, and there was so much hair that I felt like I had a blanket wrapped around my head but, I'm going shopping for one that I can actually wear, off camera and then I'm going to have it thinned and styled. I have my father's family to thank for my Androgenetic Alopecia! Thanks Dad! Happy creating!

    I believe Rio Grande's Stone Set Ring Sizer would be a good option for resizing rings as well.

    so awesome 😎 love your channel. so much great info and so fun. thank you Nancy, such a great wealth of info!
    a friend asked me to resize her silver ring (down) which I SO don’t want to do. no laser welder in my shop like a jeweler might have. I’m debating whether to pop out the stone and work it with my acetylene air torch. talk me off the ledge. lol. oh wait, you tried to already. 😊
    p.s. great 👍 wig!

    BTW - I've heard that you can protect the stone from heat by sticking into a potato :D :D :D

    A lot of people were showing how to down size and I need to see how to up size or however you say it. So Thank you for showing how to do that. BTW that's a good idea in the vice with the 2 brass pieces bent so it wont go down as your hitting it. Did you come up with that idea ?

    Wow! Love the hair, new intro ( you are one crazy lady!), and this info. I am right in the middle of making a spinner ring that somehow I ended up with the base not coming out big enough! Those wider bands always seem to get me! I tried looking up the Resizer you said came from Harbor Freight and can't find it. Did it have some unusual name? Also, I did find it on Rio Grande but it only resizes rings from 7 1/2 up. The ring I have is about a 5 1/2. Does the Resizer from Harbor Freight start at least around a 5? Thanks again for all your videos!!

      amzn.to/2bAz18J Harbor Freight changes their inventory a lot. I may have bought it 10 years ago - or more. I couldn't find it either but, here's a link for one on Amazon. Sizing thick bands is tough because they cover such a large area of the finger. Try using this form the next time you make one - it might help: mordent.com/toolsapps/. Good luck and thanks!

    There is no way you are going to shrink a ring by pounding on it on a mandrel with a metal hammer.
