In my opinion, "Ikaw" is one of the best Tagalog songs ever ever ever composed. It's just no wonder that the power, the mystery, the love in that lyrics is resonated even in the Spanish translation.
IKAW is a Sharon Cuneta original. It was composed by 2 Filipino greats, George Canseco and Louie Ocampo. It was the movie theme song of Sharon’s movie with the same title. Sharon also had a duet of this song with Ariel Rivera. It was later on revived by Regine Velasquez.
This was in the height of the popularity of the mexican telenovela ROSALINDA in The Philippines that is why they translated IKAW into Spanish. Ikaw is one of the most beautiful original Filipino song that it is tagged as the perfect wedding song.
Anyone can belt crazy high notes. Anyone can amaze people with their vocal acrobats. Anyone can perform with grandeur and production. Anyone can sing soft notes. But only very few people can caress soft notes and touch hearts. She sings to express and to speak to your soul. Been to her concerts and it’s either you can feel the atmosphere’s vibration every time she belts, or she transports you into another dimension and touch your heart to the very core. watch her SOMETIME SOMEWHERE (yellow gown) performance and BROADWAY MEDLEY with MARTIN NIEVERA.
This is the time when regine is at her prime and her voice is purely angelic and powerful. “Ikaw” is one of her famous songs and usually played in weddings.
Right I attend the wedding of my cousin in Barcelona one of the singer is a pinay ang singing this song ikaw ii spanish...Tu...and.most of the pilipino guest singing in Tagalog. Ikaw.
Man you guys are legitimate reactors who really incorporate musical philosophies to its core and have a deep appreciate for the content that’s in front of you. Real deal.
Pilita Corrales is a 81 year old Filipino singer who once hosted a Spanish musical program on Philippines radio. During her peak, she performed with the Beatles, Bob Hope, Sammy Davies and Julie Andrews. You can search for her videos on youtube singing in Spanish but they are probably really old songs.
Wonder if you've seen Bubs and Doe's interview with Regine in their channel. Just saw it today and it was a great interview. This song "Ikaw" is a great example of classic OPM. It's beautiful and one of my all time faves. For me, it stands the test of time. It was written by 2 of the best ever songwriters in the Philippines. The original singer was Sharon Cuneta, an icon in the Philippines and Regine's idol (which she mentioned in the interview) and it was part of the soundtrack to a movie titled the same (from 1993) which Sharon starred in and the male lead also did his version and I believe they also did a duet version between the 2 leads. Regine covered this song later on. And other artists too.. Classic OPM had really good melodies and emphasized the story so lyrics were important and emotion when sung, esp for this one since it's soundtrack for a movie. IIRC, tone of voice or color, ability to convey emotion was what caught people's attention. And the story and emotion in it was what held it.
I was tearing up listening to regine!! It was my first time hearing regine singing a spanish song abd it was incredible.... Thank you so much guys for sharing this,if not for you I would not know that this exist. Love here specially to efra, you also almost cried!!

Youre not wrong about Spanish being one of the best languages in the world. To me, Italian and Spanish are the two best and they come from the same tree at the end of the day. Anyone can enjoy Italian operas and/or Spanish songs even without knowing or understanding the language. The most beautiful pieces of literature in the Philippines were written in Spanish.

Regine Velasquez won in Asia Pacific singing contest. She was called in the music industry as "ASIA's SONGBIRD" because of her vocal range and belting technique .. She's definitely one of the BEST singer in the Philippines. ❤😊😊

Because we had Spanish subject decades ago. I am 45 now and we studied Spanish language in my Grade Four. Spanish language is deeply rooted in our HISTORY and CULTURE as you know. Filipinos can and converse Español very well because we used to speak it and a lot of spanish words are borrowed and incorporated in most of Filipino languages. For example in Tagalog almost 40% of the language originated or has origin that can be traced back to Spanish. I guess out of all Filipino Languages Cebuano has the most spanish in it,but we do have the Only Spanish creole in Asia and the oldest in the World which is the CHAVACANO language/creole,where most of its lexifier are based from Spanish but the grammar srtructure is solely based from Tagalog and other Austronesian languages. We do have our own variety of pure Spanish language back then, but now only 0.5% of the population speak it, mainly the older generation and those mestizos and mestizas. It is not surprising how regine pronounce spanish words easily because Filipino tounge are used to utter those words, and back then we do have a lot of latin american telenovela like Marimar, Maria Mercedes etc.
Thank you for this reaction. I did not know she sang this beautiful song in Spanish. Awesome! Here is some info for you. Spanish was actually the lengua franca in the Philippines for hundreds of years under Spain. Believe it or not, there were local newspapers written in Spanish until the 1960's. Our national hero Jose Rizal, and a few other heroes, who lived in the 1800's were highly educated and wrote in Spanish. Some very old universities in Manila were built and ran by the Spanish clerics. Many of our historical documents were in Spanish. And Spanish was part of the school curriculum until the early 70's. There was a rapid move to shift to English after WW2 under America.
Yes! There is still a private, all-girls school that still requires Spanish classes. My granduncle and grandfather spoke to us grandkids in Spanish and my favorite phrases were: vamos ala cocina, es tu regalo, quieres chocolate.
Yes. Correct me if im wrong. Since i was born the 90's. i think during marcos regime they totally removed the spanish language in all public schools exception in the universities.
Hi thank you both so much for ur genuine reaction.I really love how you do your reactions.Always on point and clarity.. Cos i believe Spanish is a language of poertry. HARANA means courting a girl ,singing to her outside of her house while the specal one is above staring down from her window while he sings.. :) You have an advantage if you know how to play an instrument esp a guitar or either just bring someone that knows and of course good vocals.Imagine if it is still done these days?Just how simple it is to express the admiration but at the same time is dificult cos of many other challenges the man will face to woo her heart?Same time yo have to win her family as well? :) Anyway, I do have anither version of the song and Regine sang it with some Tagalog at the beginning then Spanish till end. Me encantan ustedes dos! Muchas gracias por gustar nuestra reina y los otros cantantes de mi bella país!
Saludos desde Santiago de Chile!
...when music storytelling shapes out from just singing a song.. where listeners are captivated and drawn to listen until the very end, you could say the singer is really, really, reaaallly good!
Mesmerizing Regine V💚🤍
Ant wait for the paubaya version of waleska
As i am watching Regine Velasquez singing in Spanish ,now it comes into my mind also one of the best singer in the Philippines. Please check it out guys.. PELITA CORALES .
yes Spanish is beautiful language and Madam Pilita Corales the legend in the Philippines speak Spanish fluently a wonderful singer.
This era where Marimar (Thalia) is still popular in the Philippines. And Thalia vists and she sang OPM :)
Ah yeah!!! I love how you talked about the performance!!!! 💖 Your hearts are pure!!!!!
There’s an unbreakable bond between the Spanish and Filipinos. No joke…300 years under the Spanish regime was both a trauma bond and language bond. But you won’t hear any of us hating on them though. That is a miracle in itself🙏🏼
