    Hi Glynn,
Roll the field and Make hay in those fields. if you can hold out for it .haylege hidden costs with plastic. You would also need something to half the bale. Silage may go off before cows have it all eaten too.
and give the cows a few nuts and hay then over the winter. Use the yellow cow precalver bucket from cystalx. There are a great job. Just 4 weeks to go if you know the date. If calving indoors use plenty straw and vaccinate for scour now. The calf then gets protected from milk. I would calve in doors until you get to know the cows. Be careful of pets . They can usually be the most dangerous at calving.

As long as you generously remove any mouldy spots to prevent listeria, haylage should be OK. Six wraps as recommended makes a difference. Definitely get rid of moles to avoid contamination. Formaldehyde is also carcinogenic. One thing about growing your own conservation crop is that you have better control over the quality. You will know which is cheaper when you add up the costs involved in making it.

Roll the field Glyn, avoid contaminating soil in your silage/haylage. Your like us this year the grass came all of a sudden. Far better than last year but we had a very dry spell post lambing last year and the fields struggled to recover. Funny how quick you can forget the bad weather at the start of April!!. Got to say the ewe hoggs have produced cracking lambs. length and shape.

Rolling would be more for stones but it wouldn't do any harm if you have one handy. Soil in hay or silage can cause diphtheria in cattle and sheep so if you think it's going to pick up a lot of soil I would roll it.

Haylage can't be beaten for cows or sheep. The real advantage is that it can be stored outside too, so it really is a win win. It's always nice to have some bales of hay in the barn, but I would vote for haylage to feed to stock as your main fodder.
