*SALLY'S PURPOSE IN ERIC'S STORYLINE* Eric letting loose and having fun on this trip is important for his character and storyline. He's been miserable in his marriage and Sheila is always wound up so tight. She never lets loose and have fun. But Sally is _the exact opposite_ and she's about to remind Eric of what it's like to just have fun and enjoy life. That will help fortify his resolve about divorcing Sheila and in this way, Sally is playing an important role in Eric's storyline. Eric has been at this kind of crossroads before where he's unhappy in a marriage and he usually resolves it by becoming romantically involved with another woman (from Stephanie to Brooke and from Brooke to Sheila). But Sally isn't the intended romantic partner this time. The show wants instead to put Eric and Stephanie back together and that presents a problem because for all her good qualities, Stephanie isn't exactly a let loose and have fun kinda gal either! (I joked the other day that the two people you can't imagine at a concert are Sheila and Stephanie) Stephanie can be the sounding board, emotional support and bulwark of history for Eric but she can't be the fun gal. So instead the show creates this opportunity for Sally to show Eric a good time (without sparking a romantic relationship) and then hand him off to Stephanie. It's crucial too that this is happening in Rotterdam, removed from the main drama in LA, almost like a dream sequence. It's merely a transition for Eric, a sideways episode, and then everyone returns to "real life" in LA with all their real problems still there to be resolved (Eric's marriage, Macy's tumor etc).
Exactly this. Although I do wish they had made Sheila get a last minute ticket (maybe by throwing some poor ticket holder off a balcony) and showing up on the plane as the door was about to close 😂
Thanks Jase! Just wanted to add, IIRC there _will_ be a storyline where Eric pretends to be interested in Sally to stop her from stealing Forrester designs and maybe their time in Rotterdam together helps sell that, but it's merely a trick, Sally is still not the intended romantic partner for Eric.
This is so true! (Even if Sally wouldn't mind being a romantic partner to Eric as she has always found him attractive.) It also makes for good plot symmetry that the founders of rival fashion houses Spectra Fashions and Forrester Creations come together during this one "dream sequence", and then back in LA the real world awaits and Eric is again upset with Sally for paying Dylan's legal fees - a fact that Eric _doesn't know_ yet (while Stephanie does) and which he won't find out until after the trip is over.
