I was awake at midnight (not by choice) and was delighted to find a fresh dose of CatBird Quilts. I thought about waiting until a more civilized hour to watch but I don't have that much self control. I am pleased to find that watching one of your videos is delightful (there just isn't a better word) regardless of the time of day. :)
Oh yes please Cathy and Paul come to Australia 🇦🇺 you are SO WELCOME. We could have a cuppa or ten and a lovely Quilty time. You are my inspiration and favourite RUclips Quilty person ❤ Much love from the land of Oz .
Aww!! Deborah, you are TOO sweet! One of these days we'll make our way there and you can bet your sweet bippy that I'll have to find a way to see you and all my lovely Ozians! ❤️
Good morning everyone, 4:30 am here in a VERY windy Manchester, Pennsylvania. New to this channel but love it so far. Like her slower pace for us newbies and love the idea of recycling shirts. Looking forward to learning and seeing so much here.
Well it's not morning anymore, but hi, Terri! ❤️ Welcome to my channel and thank you for your kind words! I look forward to seeing you around, and thank you for watching and commenting! 😘
You remain cheerful even on a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day! Thank you for lifting my spirits as well. And, I love the quilt back with leftover HSTs. Such a good job!
Sylvie, I'm not so sure about being cheerful---I had my moments earlier in the day! But I laughed a lot which maybe pulled me out of it?🤷🏻♀ But thank you! And I'm glad it lifted your spirits! ❤
I told my very busy nurse practitioner daughter-in-law that she should watch your channel. She has a southern accent just like you and I know she would appreciate your fun sense of humor. Even though she isn't quilting or sewing right now I told her it would be a relaxing time for her to watch your channel and she would enjoy all of the information you share.
Love it!! Such "sweet" colors. I can see making this one over and over with all different color combos. The back is super impressive too. Thanks for a "happy" video on a No Good, Horrible, Very Bad Day!
Oh, but I wasn't ready for the video to end! The colors of the quilt really drew me in and I'm imagining that lovely quilt backing to join the top. It is a fabulous quilt that someone special will be lucky enough to receive. Cathy and Paul, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your creative and fun contribution to this beautiful community that you have created - and just think, it all started with thrifted shirts. Have a super time at Quilt Con! ❤🧵🪡
4 and a half minutes into this and I have 2 thoughts: first the backing for that quilt in the background- LOOKS FANTASTIC 🤩 2nd thought: you “have a lot to say” because you are a natural storyteller. And that’s probably one of the reasons some of us come to watch you ❤ Ok.. carry on!
Good morning (well, afternoon, now!) Thank you, Sally-Anne--it makes me happy that my videos may contribute to your favorite day of the week! (TGIF!!) Hugs from the States!
Hang in there Cathy (and Paul) you created a bright spot in your terrible, awful, very bad day. I am soooo addicted to shirts because of you, but as a former clothes maker turned quilter; it takes a lot of courage to cut up really nice shirts of charming fabric. Shine on Bright One, it’s so nice to hear what you have to say.
That was just what I needed after a difficult week. To sit with a coffee and just listen felt like a little bit of Heaven. Thanks so much Cathy. Yes, that's a pretty quilt pattern.
🥰Beautiful baby quilt, but wow…LOVE the second quilt backing! I enjoy using leftover fabrics for interesting quilt backings as well, but your is absolutely outstanding!!! Love it!! Bravo! Also, great work Paul! You always entertain us. 😆
Thank you, Shannon!❤️ I took inspiration from the back of the "Blizzard" quilt by KD Spain, so I won't take all the credit! And yes, Paul did a great job (as always!) I'll be sure and share your kind words with him. 😘
Early in your video you used the phrase, "here you go, make it work". I love the challenge of those words! What fun to watch and absorb your videos - inspiration, encouragement and thought provoking abundance. Thank you, Cathy Martin!
Those gorgeous colors are the colors of the sunset and sunrise! Thanks for explaining that quilt pattern so thoroughly. I too, use graph paper and pencils to figure out color placement, simply because I usually make up my own patterns and need to figure out the size blocks and how many, plus borders, etc. Your use of the off cuts for the backing is genius and truly lovely!
Hi Cathy, beautiful quilt and the backing is amazing this makes two quilts in one! I love how you put your colors together so gorgeous! Happy Friday and have a wonderful weekend! 🥰
So happy you made the video this week, I always look forward to watching, the colours of the quilt are beautiful, makes me think of spring and Easter. Thankyou
Another great video Cathy. Including pressing instructions is always so helpful. Not sure why more designers don’t do it? I think the quilt is GORGEOUS!!!!! XOX
For my first men’s shirt pattern, I’m thinking about doing the Scrappy Windows pattern by Lo & Behold Stitchery. It’s a free pattern, it’s scrappy, and it looks like she used woven fabrics in her pictured quilt. She provides layouts for lots of color options.
Thanks for doing this video although it was a stressful day for you. Hope the weekend will be relaxing and fun. I believe the quilt pattern might be a bit challenging with plaids or directional fabric. So you choice of fabrics nearly read as solids made sence to me. But on the other side if you don't bother with the directions and pattern matching, it indeed is a great pattern for all shirts. Looking forward to see your quilting ideas (the part I dread most in quilting...). Have a wonderful time!
Thank you, Julia! ❤️ I agree, it could be a bit challenging with plaid or directional fabric, but if the print is small-ish, I think it doesn't pose a problem. And honestly, I'm learning not to fuss with pattern matching since (often) in the end it doesn't really matter. 😉 I also dread the quilting part and don't really enjoy it! So we will see what I come up with! 😳🤞🏻🤷🏻♀️
Good morning Cathy ☕️ Thank you for making this video ❤❤❤ Wishing you a wonderful weekend and the whole great week ahead! 🥰 Your videos lit Fridays for so many, really and truly. 🌹 I wonder, do you watch any videos for inspiration/information or just for fun? Coz when I have a bad day, I watch yours. ❤
Aww!! Thank you, Lana! ❤️ I do watch some videos for inspiration and information--but I watch Kate at the Last Homely House for fun. She is just very calm and peaceful and I appreciate that so much about her.😊
Sorry about the yukkie day, I know those well! ❤ Love this pattern, might have to give it a go... after another project. I just finished 'Trellis' from Cluck Cluck Sew which has a similar feel-and also has leftover triangles I couldn't waste! I'm playing with HST's to make a pillow, but I love your backing so much, I'm almost regretting my backing choice! Gorgeous!! I'd love a closer look at how you pieced it! Thanks for a video that definitely cheered *me* up! 😘
Kitteh, I checked out "Trellis"--they ARE similar! (and also lovely) I'll be doing another video when the quilt is done, and we'll include a closeup of the back, so be on the lookout for that! So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching and commenting! ❤
Wow Cathy, it has been that kind of week for me too! So glad you and Paul decided to make the video...I so look forward to my Friday mornings with you.🙂 I love that you found the Geo Gems pattern (I prefer your background choice to the original pattern).
Giselle, I think that week was going around! I'm ready to relegate it to the past and be in a NEW, shinier, happier week!! I'm glad you look forward to being with me on Friday mornings--I look forward to hearing from you in comments, so we're equal. 😘 And thank you, I don't want to detract from what Emily Dennis did, but I do like that simpler background better. 🤓
The quilt on your design wall reminds me of one of the Canadian TV network (CBC). Various iterations of that logo graphics have shown repeats of the shape going out to the edges of the screen.
Your last video on this quilt inspired me to check out Emily Dennis and her Quilty Love patterns. She offers 3 free patterns for download just for signing up for her content, and two of them included coloring pages for all her sizes. Thanks for another great video and for pointing out the sashing... just another piece of info to consider when choosing a new pattern.
Isn't she just great, Laura?! ❤️ Yes, sashing. My goodness---if I had known in the beginning, we wouldn't have selected that first pattern. (even though it IS lovely.) Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Thank you, Peg. I keep trying to get a decent photo of that quilt back (and the purple shirt, and the fucshia gingham) and for some reason, those fabrics just aren't translating on film or photo! (Paul got much closer in this video, but still!!)
Love the sherbet colors! 🍬 I was breaking down 2 Hawaiian shirts yesterday. No pattern picked out yet but getting the fabric helps start the design process.
Oh dear, now I have to add another quilt to my making list 😂 thanks my friend Cathy❤ Well.. I don't have to, but I think you know what I mean! Did you decide on what style of quilting you might do? I always wonder whats best with patterns like this.... Thanks to you both for another great episode, love from Melbourne xx
Beautiful! I love this quilt top as it reminds me of Spring! So what a beautiful way to celebrate the upcoming season! When the video began and I saw you in PINK I knew it was going to be amazing. You did not disappoint!!! I like this pattern especially now that I see it with the solid background. It makes more sense to my symmetrical mind! 😂 Love you sis! Sew On! ❤
I second Deborah there. Come to Aus. Even if only for a holiday. There are way too many thrift stores in the area I am doing my locum in just for me😂 xx

Yay, My favourite day of the week. Good morning from the UK 🇬🇧
Good morning (well, afternoon, now!) Thank you, Sally-Anne--it makes me happy that my videos may contribute to your favorite day of the week! (TGIF!!) Hugs from the States!
That sweet quilt shines of Easter to me. Thanks for joining me again in my Creation Station today, Cathy.
I can see that, too, DJ! Thank you for being with me, too!! ❤️

Thank you, Marti! I'm glad you are here with me in this space! ❤️
You are welcome to visit Australia any time you like. We could go op shopping, break down the shirts we just bought and sew a quilt together. ♥
Nicole, if we ever get ourselves to Australia, I'll be calling you up to take you up on your offer!
Happy for you visit us in Australia! And we are glad you did the video ❤

Aww! Thank you, Jenny! ❤️
Sweet is the perfect word for this quilt. I hope your 'no good terrible day ' becomes an 'ahhh' day.❤❤
Thank you, Elaine! ❤️ It did get better---maybe not "ahh" but at least not awful!😂
Another lovely video. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank goodness for Paul 😂
Thank you, Dawn! And right?! He is the horsepower behind the channel! ❤️
So pretty. And the quilt’s nice, too! (Lol, couldn’t resist.) I really love the back’s design very, very much.😻 Thanks for the pattern straight talk.
Thank you, Cassandra! ❤️ You are just too sweet! 😘
QuiltCon! I can’t wait!
It'll be here before we know it, my friend! ❤️
So happy you made the video this week, I always look forward to watching, the colours of the quilt are beautiful, makes me think of spring and Easter.

Lovely quilt ❤Paul on point as usual 😂 My daughter's coming for the week end , so flurry of activity ! See you next time.
Thanks, Giselle! Have fun with your daughter this weekend! 🥰 And I'll pass along your compliments to Paul
👍 For me, using thrifted fabric is exciting, so is not wasting fabric.
Same, Randyll. Same.❤️

Pretty quilts. Love the beginning backing. Thanks for video
Thanks, Jeanette! ❤️
I got to see your quilt hanging at quilt con today in Raleigh! It looked great
Aww thank you! Are you coming back tomorrow? Come find me and say hello!
What a beautiful pattern. Cathy you are amazing and thank you for all that you inspire!! Monica No.1 fan from Australia
Thank you, Monica! ❤️ You Ozians are a pretty wonderful bunch! 😘
Love how this quilt is turning out 🥰It’s SO pretty👏🏻 Did you say now what you were doing for the quilting?
Thank you, Charity! And no, not yet! I'll have to talk about it in an upcoming video (once I decide!!)

It’s beautiful ❤

Thanks to you both for another great episode, love from Melbourne xx
Kim, I haven't decided on the quilting at all! 😱 But I'm sure it will come up in a future video! 😂 Much love to you in Melbourne from Alabama! ❤️
Sew On! ❤
Christina, I feel the same about this pattern---the solid background helps anchor the design and makes more sense to my symmetrical mind as well!
How beautiful ❤❤❤❤
Ver pretty quilt. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks, Janie!❤️
I second Deborah there. Come to Aus. Even if only for a holiday. There are way too many thrift stores in the area I am doing my locum in just for me😂 xx
You know I'd be so happy to go thrift shopping with you, Kylie! ❤️
@@TheCatBirdQuiltsYou would need a few empty suitcases, or send back home the goodies 😂
I completely get using all the leftover triangles. That's part of the reason I don't like to do HST's!
Me too, Sara!
There's an easy 2-at-a-time method for HSTs plus an easy 8-at-a-time method. It's those snowball / folded corners that generate the trimmed right triangles *unless* you use something like Essential Triangle Tool to minimize the extra. I choose to have that extra trimmed off HST to use in something scrappy or in an improv piece.
A simple modification to the Luminaries pattern would have simplified it enormously. The root of the assembly problem is that the "lantern" points extend into what would otherwise be simple sashing. Scale that point down to eliminate the extension and you've got an intermediate 9 patch assembly with simple sashing. That might not work for your RUclips purposes, seeing as you pay such respect to a designer's product, but it would work for me.
Absolutely, Ruth. And what I will do at home when quilting for myself or friends or family might be exactly that. But I do try to respect quilt designers' patterns---especially on the channel. I try to put myself in their shoes---and not put out on YT anything that I wouldn't want anyone to do/say about my pattern if I was a quilt pattern designer. 😘
golly, I love that orange gingham! I have a massive stash of vintage fabric from a dress making factory coming my way. I am wondering if this would be a good pattern for that scrappy batch. Interested to see what crazy mass of 80's florals I end up with.
You GOT to share that with us!!
Yep, gotta share.
I can't wait to hear about this "massive stash!!"😳🤩😍😂 IG me with a photo when you get it! ❤️
Beautiful quilt! ❤ I think a lot of us are ready to move to Australia btw. 😉
Thank you, Diana! And right?! So over a lot around me right now.
Great pattern!
I love your quilt! How beautiful. I have been thinking of making my grandchildren quilts for their 18" dolls. Do you have any suggestions for a pattern? I can't come up with any myself. ❤
Oh gosh, Sharon---I think you could search for small quilt patterns and maybe get loads of ideas! (but I don't know any right off the top of my head!) ;)
Another beautiful quilt! Cathy, have you ever worked with EPP? (English Paper Piecing).
Thank you, Bonnie! ❤️ And no, not yet at least!!
I’m sitting here trying to think of someone who ought to be having a baby so I can make this quilt!
Right?! It's so pretty and sweet (to me)--I'm gonna have to find someone with a baby to give it to! ❤️
❤
