  • As preparation for a fresh rebuild on the Big Harley Flathead continues, it's time to lap the main bearing races. This requires some specialized equipment and more "handwork." pacificmike.com/

    I use a 3/8 bsp tap when the timing plug threads are gone, and of course a plug, got a nice chrome one from the hardware store: :)

      58 would be fine. I used to live a few hundred miles north of SoCal. Full leathers on the coast was great, especially with my electric vest in the wintertime.

    Another great video. Way back when we were putting together a basket 45, we had a friend turn a big stick on his wood lathe, covered it in valve lap and ran it through both races. I wouldn't recommend it, but it worked. :D

    If a guy wanted to lap his crank bearing races where would he purchase this tool? Another question, when you are done with the lapping process, where would you get oversized bearings if you needed them? The reason I ask you is because my dealership laughs at me every time I ask for something. I really like your videos. I wish I had some of your knowledge back in the 80s when I started out. I had VLs and nobody knew anything. So I had to learn it all. I had really good fortune. The bikes came out really nice.

      That's very cool. All of the major aftermarket suppliers carry those items. Drag Specialties Old Book. V-Twin (Ted Cycle). Eastern Makes the Tools and bearings. So D

      You are correct. There was actually all the plans in place for air conditioning for my house and garage this year. Most of the equipment is here. Something came up (we just call it "life."). Summer is almost over. It will be much better next year. We'll have it done.

    Hey mike I know I'm a little late to the party I just turned 20 subscribed and watched your evo motor build series from a year ago I cannot thank you enough I'm rebuilding my dad's old bike and just wanted to let you know that you are a big part of this project I got going on I wouldn't have known where to start I'd like to send you my progress it's a s&s but evo style on a hard tail frame it's been through hurricane Irma down in key marathon Florida I brought it to Midland Texas and I've been working on replacing frame parts wheels and front end thing but now I'm going through the engine and am waiting on bushing and gaskets for this bike thank you so much for such great inspiration and knowledge ps I would so buy your Cut brake rotors for my flywheel and thank you doing what your doing hope to hear from you

    That's a spendy tool. Never seen one in use before. At my skill level, I had to have an indie do all this kind of work to my ironhead case. Trans, too. now it all lines up hopefully.

      The bearings are graduated in tenths of thousandths.

    Hi Mike! Sorry this comment isn't relevant to this video. I have a 96 Softail with an Evo. It is spitting air/fuel out of the carburetor really made. Rebuilt the carb and changed all the rubber everything seems fine. But still is spitting back out. Is it possible my intake valves could not be closing all the way? Wether it is from carbon build up, bent valve, or an adjustment? What are you thoughts.
    Really appreciate all your videos and what you do for the community. Keep up the good work and

      My computer is acting up. If you've changed your air cleaner or pipes and created this problem or if it's been going on already, try a slightly larger low speed jet in your carburetor. That will probably do it. They are set up lean to start with.

    Hi, Mike. Please help me. I have a brand new outer and inner rings, they correspond to the dimensions specified in the manual. do I need to do lapping? I just want to install a bearing of the right diameter without lapping. can I do this without lapping?

      I do show it. What you'll need is your service manual. The oil lines are very important and specific. The shimming of the motor sprocket is critical. Installing the inner primary housing is critical.

    Great video Mike, so question can you not have measured that out and preset that to the correct bore you wanted or is that not how that tool works? I personally have never seen one like that before, similar but that one is different than anything I’ve ever seen

      This is a higher quality, but same as factory recommends. At this point, you're removing all "imperfections" from the surface s of the bear races.

      Then, the rollers are fitted. They are graduated in tenths of thousandths. Sorry, my computer is acting up.

    HELLO Mike👍 quick question on disc brake pad GREASING. SORRY, I HAVE a 2004 FATBOY. What points on the pad do you lubricate to avoid chattering , squealing, or any other noise. So i can eliminate the PADS from the equation. If i still have issues after lubing certain points on pad, i will buy the Kevlar pads. THANKS IN ADVANCE🙏 I APPRECIATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE. OR DO U ALREADY HAVE a VIDEO ON this TOPIC Mike ?

    What is the go with the front cyclinder having a cut out for rod but the back being completely open?

      I've got to study it more. But, there is no oil pumped to the topend. The pistons, get what's splashed on them from the bottom and the valves get what they get from the lifters. The scraper plates are different from an overhead also. Again, to give a really good answer will take a little more studying.

      @@pacificmike9501 cheers, sounds like there is more then we may understand based on newer engine design...interesting to hear that the older engines make do with a splash style lubrication for the bottem end, and a "hope for the best" style top end lubrication...
      Very interesting build to follow, if for no other reason, knowledge...

      It's not splash for the bottom. It's pressure from the pump into the crank and bearings. Splash occurs after the valve lifters. The factory diagrams show it all. That doesn't mean I've got it all straight in my head yet.

      @@pacificmike9501 splash for the top end via lifters? Sounds odd, almost sounds like the oil pump was for the bottem end only and damn the rest...but it did seem to work for harley...
      Now more interested in this build...

      The real beauty is the massive amount of smooth torque these big Flatheads make. Sidevalve engines make great torque and a long stroke and heavy flywheels. I do all of these things to have the experience that I crave. I ride old bikes until they're worn out, rebuild and ride some more.
