I would have gone for the fire extinguisher first but if I couldn't put out the fire I wouldn't have any time to grab the essentials. I'm thinking I'm going to have to make up a grab bag with some essentials in it, like EPIRB, water, food and first aid kit, so I can get it first before going for the fire extinguisher and fire blanket which are easy to access. I love these educational videos and I rate this as one of your best videos. Cheers.
You clip your EPERB to your belt with a knife so that if you blow a tire and roll and your stuck upside down in it you can at hand without needing to find it set off your EPERB
Your best option in an emergency is a grab bag that contains essentials for survival such as an epirb / sat phone / radio, torch, space blanket / small tarp, water purification straw, first aid, protein bars, water / electrolytes, strobe, signalling mirror, flint / lighter, your essential medication, gps etc. Throw this out first, then worry about fighting the fire and grabbing additional water etc. Help is generally not far away once you activate your epirb. Stay with your vehicle even if burnt out.
Just a tip for you been suspension 20 plus years the tip is to lift the back of vehicle as best you can because tension of ubolts you have diff. Pushing away from leaf springs at Carnegie tractor with forks under towbar or hi lift jack couple of checks is better such rough or ubolt excess thread gets hooked on rock and bends 10mm length max better 😄
Who ever did that edit needs to be congratulated some incredible transition and masking 👌 We love your travel content it’s awesome even if your in Toyota’s 😂 Matt and Leisa
I was surprised Ronny, I would have expected you after all these years to have a better plan for a packout bag. You may not agree with ASPW on many things but I'd suggest you take his advice for his packout bag which I've found to be the best I've seen. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Awesome video! Super eye opening. My rally car had a plumbed in fire extinguishing system. Just hit a switch and goes everywhere. Hitting that then grabbing essentials could be a go if possible to install maybe.
The fire simulation was great. My two cents on the PLB - It should be visible so someone who does NOT know you or your set up can approach your car, see that you are in need of help and locate, plus activate your PLB. If they don't have one it might be the only one around. Mine is hanging from the back of my drivers seat headrest so if I roll it, it stays right near my head.
I carry a hiking backpack filled with PLB water food knife and first aid kit on back seat. Followed by fire extinguisher under seat and large pressurised water on the tray. Only issue I saw was opening the full wing. That would allow more air into the fire causing it to accelerate burning. Great thing to show people to be prepared.
@ if a fire is in a particular place ie engine bay opening it fully will cause a huge amount of air to fuel the fire. Best option is to crack it enough to allow an extinguisher to deploy into the gap. I also carry a long bent metal hook to assist in grabbing long grasses from areas
I have a waterproof grab bag in the rear footwell. It has food, shelter, matches, flight, first aid kit, a Trangia stove, PLB, sat phone, water, a plastic sheet to make a still, a mini folding shovel and a first aid kit. If my vehicle goes up or goes under water, I grab it and run.
Set up of blue troopy is awesome fit for function . I have 105 on new muddies Yokohama’s on road manner good 33 but have just purchased wildpeeks from falken which are 31s for summer basic touring mainly to get back some fuel efficiency back 1fz auto they are on separate rims of course I kept the muddies on after your recommendation am a believer but my gearing with the auto is just in between the sweet spot with me fuel guzzling 105 😅
Did this track in early february 1991 which in hindsight was foolhardy but my girlfriend at the time insisted. Didn't meet anyone on the track, temperatures over 40c the first two days. we had plenty of water but no comms. Informed the cops in Wiluna before we started. Corrugations the worst I have ever experienced.
Nice one ronnie and friends, its this sort of vehicle test that will see everyone deciding there done with the v8 as many already are ,adding to the fact are v8 owners thinking there got something of value so are asking ridiculous prices ,hoping they can cash in before the tide turns for the 2.8,it already has
ASPW did an episode a while back where he talked about having a grab bag easily reachable along with a 10 litre water container - I believe 10 not 20 due to the weight difference and ease of removal. He went through what the grab bag should contain (PLB / sat phone etc). Well worth watching.
In case of fire it is probably best to keep as much as possible doors (and windows) closed to prevent air flow in the car. This fuels the fire. But I know. every second counts.
I'd probably mount the LPB on the dash, or one of the A or B pillars. Anything that is not fixed in place becomes a loose missile in event of a crash, so even the cell phone gets fixed in place.
Its a good point lads but you'll have more time then 15 seconds 😅 you have at least a minute while it's a initial fire with smoke to fight it, then at three minutes you'll have either beat it back or lost the car.
I don't understand why you wouldn't have a go back with everything in it. Your PLB / EPIRB, emergency rations, water, warm clothes, tarp / bivy, first aid kit, multi tool etc. Worth doing I reckon...
Does anyone have a tip on how to make the rear of the Troopy look a bit nicer? I like my Troopy and need the space in the back, but I don't find the rear so pretty (the 76er reak is nicer)
Your extinguisher like your EPERB that should be clipped to your belt so it can't be thrown out of reach in a roll-over and your on your own and trapped your extinguisher along with a small kit with bandages to stop bleeding should be at hand reach between seats . It's no different to a dangerous goods truck carrying CYANIDE like all dangerous goods trucks must carry a safety kit bag in cab in case of accident but a CYANIDE truck must also carry a Breathing apparatus BA at drivers reach incase of rollover
I would have thought an Overlander as experienced as yourself WOULD have had an Emergency " Grab and Run " Kit . Epirb , Rad/Sat Phone , Solar still , One Roll of Bog-Roll , Thermal Blanket , Etc....... If the Vehicle Burns down your DEFINITELY need the " Come and get me " Beacons . Great that you took your Young Daughter along by herself .
Have to be very careful with the Grevillea , many many people are highly allergic to grevilleas , not a place to be having an allergic reaction .Interesting country , gotta love the desert .
This fire drill was all about stop in middle of road away from grass that can catch fire and no accident has happened and everyone has stepped out of vehicle you havnt got any shock which makes you not think clearly to look for things and if you do have all your kit together and organised but the door you need to get open is jammed and you can't get it open after a rollover
I love that the station owner said you need to be a good mechanic to own a jeep. That's why he uses them for muster. They're garbage, and he would rather do the repairs and let them get damaged instead of the toyotas😊
“Make camp before it’s dark” if that statement came from anyone else I’d have hope in that claim but seeing as it’s coming from Rondah I know it’s a slim chance😂

4:00 Speaking to the station owner reminded me of Russell Coight.. in for the hand shake and a yarn then "time to hit the road"
But somewhat more Competent than Poor old Russ .
that's what I was thinking lmao!
I thought that too. Missed opportunity for a quick closeup of someone else’s handshake 😂
@@AndrewTinWA exactly what I thought, would've been great! Was Ronny at his most Russell, Ronny Coight .
I love that dog Snickers at the station - great hosts and was a unreal trip towing our camper
Very well shot Chris. Great video. Thank you.
That emergency drill is a bloody good idea.
Lol, I've been on the Gun Barrel Highway in my Daihatsu Charde when I worked on 3 outback sheep stations ...
I like the cinematic quality of this episode

Holy geez I remember when Sienna used to ride in a child seat in the old 79, she has grown.
We had a great trip! This one for sure will be remembered
Definitely Food for thought Ronny. Got me thinking where to put everything for easy access

Loved the vid.
That simulated fire was a big wake up call and has prompted us to rethink where we put essential gear.
Did this track in early february 1991 which in hindsight was foolhardy but my girlfriend at the time insisted. Love the Melcome Douglas call back.
Hmmm Bush tucka Rod, Fireman Rod! Food for thought!
you could always just have an easily accessible fire extinguisher, that works too
Awesome video!
Enjoyed that.. looking forward to the next
Cheers again

Also, the car is not air tight, so good idea for a windy day, but it will still go quick. Get essentials and flee to a few hundred feet.
I'd probably mount the LPB on the dash, or one of the A or B pillars. Anything that is not fixed in place becomes a loose missile in event of a crash, so even the cell phone gets fixed in place.

Technical question Ronny (or others) - Do you engage 4WD while driving that highway?
I believe he would in any off the actual road situation.
My guess is 4H for this part of the track that we see here
