I find it cute but misguided how the British elites identify themselves with Demosthenes. Demosthenes could only see the small picture. He was all about the interests of his city-state, of his microcosm. Philip and Alexander were those who saw the big picture. Visionaries of the great synthesis far ahead of their time for no Athenian politician, no Spartan politician, no Theban politician has ever done SO MUCH for Hellenism and therefore for Europe than Philip and his brilliant son, Alexander the Great.
