Obviously since this is a Japanese word and not technically a name, writing it in Katakana wouldn't make much sense. Maybe they wanted to simplify the kanji for younger players? Still, when Isabelle became a fighter, they also wrote her name, Shizue, in hiragana (しずえ) likely to be consistent with Villager, but it has no reason to be written in Hiragana, since her name is not a word. Confusing still is why the Dragon Quest Hero's Japanese name, Yuusha (勇者) is written in kanji. The use of these alphabets, so inconsistent.
4 years late but doubutsu no mori barely uses kanji because it is aimed at being available to very young kids, dragon quest on the other hand uses kanji for 勇者 in the games where it's possible, so it is to stay consistent with their game of origin.
