    No Charlamagne did not run a feudal state. he was the head of the Settled Tribal kingdom of the Franks. they settled in Gaul in the 400s but still followed the Partible inheritance structure and had a looser system of association than a feudal contractual structure up until his death (which is why in CK3 his empire starts in 4 pieces. he begins ruling in 768 and they only begin adopting southern European feudal contract practices with the blessing of the pope in 800. he would die in 814

      Incredibly insightful comment, I still wish raiding wasn’t limited to tribal rulers though.
      Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I understood Feudalism was a rigid system of government, and understood it had similarities in each kingdom that adopted it, but I didn’t know it originated in Southern Europe and was as rigid of a system as this. I knew the papacy was integral to European Feudalism, but was misguided in thinking Feudalism developed separately and then became tied gradually to the papacy. You made me want to learn more about this.

      @@xjuncewski I mean if you want to get really technical it actually is considered to Originate with Charlamagne himself but its closest analog prior to his coronation in 800 is the practices in the collapsed region of the Western Roman Empire which were heavily influenced by the pope. (which is why he sought papal recognition in 800 after the conquest of North Italy) it is from this tradition that the Holy Roman Empire draws its Papal Crowning Ceremony (hence the Holy part) and the Italian region of his empire would fall under the HRE when the Ruler of Bavaria (the Son of the Ruler of Eastern Francia in CK3) would also Aquire it. at various points Rome itself would fall under HRE juristiction. (hence the Roman part of HRE. I know the meme is that the HRE Was neither Holy nor roman nor an empire but at its founding it Was holy with ruler chosen by papal decree, Roman in that the City of Rome was tied heavily into its administration and it system of rule reflected roman regional governorships, and an empire in that it was multiple kingdoms under one crown. emperor being a title that means King of Kings. of course by the time napoleon ended it... it was a series of German Duchies ruled by an arch duke that the pope refused to acknowlage... so the meme was accurate at the end.) though the papal state retained a high degree of autonomy as each successive monarch had to negotiate with the pope to be crowned.

      @@scorpioneldar it seems to me you love the Holy Roman Empire, which unfortunately makes us enemies.
      The early history of Feudalism is very interesting. We can say it started here or there, but I think it’s more accurate to treat each region and time as its own unique thing. We can say both Poland and Galicia were Feudal monarchies in 1100? In each society there were clear hierarchies in which landed elites held entrenched power through families, maintained by legalistic contracts. But definitely correct me if my idea of Feudalism is wrong. Jeepers creepers history can be hard sometimes

    • @xjuncewski
      @xjuncewski  Месяц назад

      The reason I highlight those two kingdoms is because they’re on opposite sides of Europe. Despite being so far apart they each had very similar governance, each also tied to the papacy

    • @scorpioneldar
      @scorpioneldar Месяц назад +1

      @@xjuncewski that is very true. however by 1100 that form of government had 300 years to spread. and Charlamagne's empire stretched all the way to Hungary... and was part way into Iberia (all of Barcelona was a part of it) so Galicia and Poland were both neighboring states to the founding empire of the concept (gallica at the time being a part of the Kingdom of Austrias which even in the 867 start date shares a border with western Francia). it isn't wild to imagine both had adopted their neighbors system in that time (indeed the Polish adoption of Feudalism actually occurs under Bolislav the brave in 1025 after he had already ruled the Feudal duchy of Bohemia from 1003-1004 his model of Feudalism being lifted directly from the HRE)

      Just bought the game about 1 month ago. I'm just happy running around conquering land. Then I get bored, restart a new game & do the same thing. I haven't delve into succession, inheritance, faith, culture, religion, vassals management, & many other intricacies. Just happy running around conquering lands to my heart's content. Got all the DLC's. Wandering nobles seems boring, so I went back to just conquering more lands. 😆

    Those differences between different crown authorities are really ingenious.
    I always just considered limited crown authority important, and anything more just gives a bit more taxes and opinion penalties, not really worth constant civil wars.
    But this system makes it really interesting!

      @xavierjuncewski max crown athority also lets you designate your heir even in defiance of whatever your succession laws are. It's very worth it. It is less essential if you can elevate a co monarch, but still.
