Iran was like this. Back in the 1970s it was really a modern place. My dad was over there doing computer stuff. Then the Ayatollah came in, and Dad got out just in time - he had a tape recording of the crowds shouting and rioting. The Ayatollah was prone to coming up with very simple slogans, it was a real dumbing-down of things.

The lack of understanding of Iranian society by the Shah and Iranian elites, who were deeply entrenched in European and Western values, resulted in a profound disconnect between their worldview and the values held by the majority of the population. This failure to appreciate and accommodate the cultural, religious, and socio-economic realities of the broader Iranian society undermined societal cohesion. The imposition of Western ideals without proper consideration for the Iranian context caused divisions, ultimately contributing to the upheaval and discord that peaked in the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Not only that, it also spurred a significant Iranian diaspora to the West, like yourself, reflecting the profound repercussions of disregarding the unique socio-cultural fabric of Iran. I perceive the whole phenomenon as a form of cultural imperialism or neocolonialism.
This is for the entire Muslim world not just Palestinians even in Malaysia or Morocco or Pakistan you see this. Saudis pushed for more Islamic education and schools so more people became more culturally religious over time and the headscarf became more needed.
The era before that was the British colonialist era

@@Rai2M It really isn't. It has destroyed the Middle East by creating a whole heap of confusion and resentment. Arguably though the neo colonial era was worse with the deposing of governments and the support of monarchies which lead to the islamic revolution. And then the blind support for Saudi Arabia because it is necessary for the US economy. Despite the fact it has become increasingly radical and oppressive and is the primary source of extremist islamic ideology.
I don't think the imperial powers have done anything good in the Middle East ever.

Thanks for your work. Curiously, I discovered your channel before 10/7 and I am so grateful for what you're doing and the way you're doing it. But most of the time your vids are hopeless, no issue, preparing the next war, from both sides.
Actually there are phots of well known religious leaders with their families and not a woman in hijab. Hassan Elbanna the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and his successors was dressed in western clothes, their female relatives were not with hijab. There are photos of university campuses and not a hijab in sight and that includes Al Azhar University. At Al Azhar even the female lecturers were not with hijab. All such photos available on the internet.
Why it happened? because of the rise of power of the MB after 1970 when they were released from prisons and given powers in mosques and universities to use religion to counter the the secular nationalist drive that dominated the Arab world for decades.
Not true if you watch Photos from 1880-today you will see that modest dressing for men and women has been getting less and less and less. Today it's got to be the least modest Palestine, that has been for the past thousand years. So to say, that today people dress more modest is simply and saddly untrue.
Insha Allah Sisters will find it in themselves to go this important step of their faith. However it should always be a free choice.

All over the Middle East there was a tendency toward westernization. You can find old film on YT of Iranian women in short dresses and poofy hair styles, for example. Do a search, it's so interesting to watch those old films!

It is not a problem that the society is religious, religion in normal countries is a private matter of the individual and his community, the problem is that religion and customs in such societies are imposed on others (Iran is a clear example of such a society, and I believe that Palestinians have similar problems, depending on which part of Palestine you live in)

I feel like the photos you were talking about are very misleading. yes some women did not wear hijab and some did wear the hijab, and that's also something we see even today. the women in the photos did not make the majority they were maybe upper class women who had access to cameras, the majority of Palestinian women / middl easter women were very simple people, not necsisserly religious but they were way more traditional. in fact they were way more traditional then today. you can't just cherry pick few photos and say '''oh this is how the Palestinian women used to dress".
That's besides the point Islamic revival is real and the regression has been widespread across the middle east. This coincides with it being used as a form of control over women. The West Bank does not have very good women's rights and in another video on this channel a lawyer said that honour un alivings were increasing (there were 23 in 2013).

There is a big difference between religious wear and traditional wear. I think you know the difference. Traditional is similar what old Greek or Italian women used to wear, loose head scarf and skirts knee level. Women didn’t wrap their heads and necks and cover their arms and legs all the time.

In my opinion extremism is always a huge problem - whether it comes out of the muslim world or the ultraorthodox jewish community. In my personal opinion you can recognize an extremist rise because of groups like Hamas, IS, Taliban or other...which is also kind of notable in western europe. The conflict is still more complicated since Oct. 7th and I surely hope for peace soon. But from my pov that is not possible with religious fundamentalism on any side. And who am I to tell you about your conflict from my ivory tower here in Germany 🙈 thank you for your work again! תודה

What question is a good question?
Up until the 70’s fasting and praying was only done by older people. Village women wore lose white thin head scarfs, city women did not cover their hair. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
Nearly all pictures show headscarfs, on women and men, so you are the one that is misleading the people.

@@Anonymouse166 There is no such thing as "islamic" headgear. You have to cover and be modest. And your clothes also need to be lose. Hijab is not a specific muslim concept, it's just one way to cover. Muslims don't have to wear the headscarf, they could also wear a lose sweatshirt, that covers their hair and necks, for example. However it is important that clothes are different from male clothes, so it has to be apparent to be for females.
"O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful."
However these days a lot of Palestinians don't wear headscarfs at all. And especially the huge variety of different clothes and headscarfs from village to village.

The fact is, in the older days women did not take extra care of making sure every single hair is covered and neck fully covered. Any headscarfs, if worn, where lose, necks open and even traditional women’s cloths had a slightly open neckline. Village women had w white see through covering half of their hair and their necks not covered. Stop going in circles.
@@Anonymouse166 Ah, I see you strictly refer to the way hijab is worn. There are many different styles! Today there are more women who don't wear the headscarf than in the past, while those who do wear it, might be more educated and more strict in their faith.
It isn't forbidden to wear hijab more strictly, this is a personal choice. There is nobody hunting you for showing a strain of hair either. As long as you wear it for Allah, you are on the righteous path. Don't wear it for anyone else! If you are not ready to wear it or you don't want to wear it, this is also your personal choice as long as you don't proclaim that it isn't a sin in Islam.
However, in a mosque it is obligatory!

Although I love the premise of these videos, I find it so frustrating that the questions are asked and translated a little differently for every person. Please, please, please, decide what the exact phrasing is going to be, and ask that exact question to each person. Tiny differences in the question will result in differences the answers, which works against the purpose of the project.
My family is islamic and from the Ex-Yugoslavia. My grandpa(80) and my grandma(75) told me that in their childhood women wore all niqab/burqa. Then the head of state forced all women to take off the veils. It was a socialist time and my grandpa&grandma were so happy that the people got liberal and that women could finally educate themselves and work. They dont like hijab, burqa/veil certainly not. They are happy that the modern liberation came.
Palestine is definetely not as conservative as people say. It's more modern than Saudi-Arabia or Egypt. I mean in Palestine live also Christians, Muslims without hijab and many women have make-up on and can work.
The Islamic religion did not prevent women from working or education, and did not force women to wear the hijab. In the Islamic religion, the hijab is obligatory for women, but no one has the right to force a woman to do so. For example, I am a Muslim woman and I studied the field that I love, but the fault does not lie with Islam itself. The fault lies with the bac..kward people or ter..rorist groups that interpret the religion incorrectly and distort it.
The moment people are happy with government imposing laws that prevents muslims to obey Gods commandments than there is a reason to assume they are not islamic at all.
The sad thing is most Muslims like Authoritarian states when left to their own devices. Religion does that to people.. not all people, but the majority of them. The more they believe the more they seem to like Authoritarianism.
Hi man, ex-Yugoslav here, fellow Bosnian Serb.
Yugoslav Muslims, Bosniaks, are definitely the most liberal Muslims in the world, it is difficult to compare it with other countries. Maybe some parts of Turkey are similar (big cities), Singapore and possibly some of the former Soviet republics, but they have some strange mixtures of Asian, Soviet and Islam customs.
In most other countries, with a Muslim majority, if you exclude the authoritarian regime, everyone will slowly begin to sink into some version of the Islamic State, where religion greatly interferes with the state. I'm quite sure this could never happen in Bosnia.
_These are my conclusions from what I've read, seen and learned, I could be wrong_
Palestine is certainly by far more modern than Saudi Arabia, but it is not more modern than Egypt. Egyptian society on average in the north is significantly more liberal than Palestine. Cairo and Alexandria are definitely not as conservative as Gaza. The Egyptian Sinai region is more conservative than Palestine, but only a small minority of Palestinians live there.

I think it's the settlements that are keeping them from going full-on 7th century in Judea. When you've got people among you who esteem learning, educate their children male *and* female, and so on, it rubs off.

it's insane how people are still unable to see religion as a political system, while this is exactly what conservatism is : going back and trying to preserve an old system that we know is confortable and working because changes bring a lot of shaking into societies and threatens the position of citizens (place of men, or women, people in power, what is acceptable and not, politics, education, and so on)
we can never forget that Palestine has always been a mother for the Abrahamic religion, it is true that Muslims were the majority but there were Jews and Christians too and they all constituted Palestine and they were all Palestinians .
so we can never affirm the religion of these women that we are saying that they were more liberalist since we are talking about the hijab and conservative clothes.
also even the difference in religions there was a minority who dressed in a liberal way at that time and this is due to religion and the arrival of Zionists who came from Western countries for colonization. So if we want to know the truth of ancient Palestinian customs we must look for old documentaries and old photos paying attention to nationality and religion at the time we will become more sure about the photos.

The only oppression that exists, is that of the occupation! Being covered and modest is also much better for society as a whole.
Look at the impressive achievements by Palestinian women. They are first at their scientific fields. Covering means simply guarding oneself, and being appreciated for who you are, not only for how you look! And in the past it was also mainly culture!

Perhaps the fact that there are many wars happening in the middle east makes people more connected to the afterlife. Before all the conflicts, people may have forgotten about their religion and their afterlife but today they are reminded of it everyday and therefore, this might make them feel that they don't wanna lose both this life and the next
basically people before were much less judgmental of others, but now that has chaned due to how digitalized the world has become, so people nowadays judge based on what they see online
It points out to strenghening position of religion in oposition to weakening position of education. And Its noticable in other foundamentaly religious societies all around the world in cases of all religions. Its visible on dresscode, hearable in ideological statements and observable in their troubleshooting process and solution creating process.
Look at Pal photos from the 1800s, and they had a lot of uniquely tribal clothing. Things changed, so did fashions. You can't expect people to be stuck in the 50s or 70s fashion. Today, tribal roots are less shameful to a more open-minded global Gen Z, vs "boomers" and even X'rs who needed to assimilate out of a sense of shame of being different. Its just like how many more Jewish kids dress to assimilate in Christian dominant schools, vs being openly Jewish, wearing black hats and long hair. Or Asian kids eat pizza vs ethnic foods that might be perceived as "gross" to other kids.

I remember my teacher congratulating the class because most of us had the hijab on then she continued to explain that in her time and our grandparents time most of the young woman didn't used to wear hijab I also remember my mom saying that my grandmother only started praying covering in her mid to late forties which is hard to believe if you saw my grandmother today in her seventies always with a prayer beed in her hand there are also pictures of my mom and her sisters in their late teens early twenties dressed very westernised Even though they were married with kids unlike me my sisters our cousins who all had hijab on in our teens but I'd like to point out hijab doesn't necessarily mean religious as I don't remember any of us praying and prayers are more important than modesty the opposite of my mom who wasn't covered but I've always remembered her praying even in her early twenties she even taught my dad who started praying because of her
Unfortunately in our days hijab doesn't mean religious I think it's more of a cultural thing or follow the mass kind of thing as I have A lot of people around me friends siblings cousins uncle wives who all put a scarf on but a lot don't pray which is like the second pillar in islam

As a Palestinian I think what really happened is that the longer we stayed under occupation and harassment on a daily basis, the more people became religious and seeking God for comfort. Which led to such a conservative dress could for Muslims and Christians
Islam reinforce morality and ethics, while other laws and political systems mostly neglect morals and ethics so islam is the right choice for most people especially who are oppressed

They were more Christians as a percent of the population. Because Muslims are 97% of population versus 60% of population before 19 40 that is the main reason.
There were far more muslims than 60%, but most christians in the diaspora left because of the occupation. I promise you once their country is free, they will return!

They were run by the Ottomans and British before, more free than under Arab muslim rule always is in the world. That's why when the first "Palestinian" Arab Muslim governments were created (Fatah and Hamas), we see suddenly everyone is wearing hijab.
Note all the "Palestinian" Muslim Arabs are nee inmigrants mostly from Egypt and Arabia.
But it seems that the people saying that Palestinians are becoming more liberal are only correct in terms of the last two decades as people warm up to Israel. So it went from liberal, then Arab Muslim conservative, then recently becoming more liberal. Yet they still admit Muslims are more critical of how they dress now than before, so I feel the amount dressing liberally again is very low.

The general idea that comes through here is that liberal/conservative dress sense does not equal a fitting liberal or conservative mindset/lifestyle. I‘m a bit skeptical of looking at old pictures and then draw the conclusion: „That’s how society was back then!“. Photographs are always exponents of the photographers and their approach. If you look at pictures from Europe in the 19th/early 20th century, you always see people dressed in a bourgeois way, with nice suits and ties, so people today assume that everything was very orderly and clean. But you rarely see the people living in the slums of the London East End or Naples, or the peasants in rural Prussia. I highly doubt that Palestinians in the 1950s/1960s were less traditional than today, in fact today you have a much deeper modern influence coming through with the internet. Yes, there was a fundamentalist revival pushed by Saudi Arabia-financed extremist groups, but rumors have it that the number of atheists/agnostics in all Arab countries is higher than official numbers suggest. We shouldn‘t draw simple conclusions from the fashion.

No one mentioned, the main reason is Khomeini or islamic revolution in iran, and increased influence of political islam groups in Palestinian community.
No one really answered the question as it should. The whole of the Arab world dressed liberally in the 50s, 60s, 70s, then in recent years people started becoming more religious therefore hijab increased. Many reasons for that, mostly the turmoils and wars in the region geared people towards religion
It was actually not muslim dominantly community in Palestine, both the Jews and the muslim didn't like the christian people at that time, so many of the christian people went away when the land occupation was introduced, while the Jews didn't care with the muslim. Right now the Jews begin to care with them, so the Palestine muslim women want to show that they are a different community from both the christian and the Jews women. If the muslim women said that they were more religious, they should went out with their male relatives and mainly stayed at home.

The question however was misleading, as the further you go back in time, the more conservative clothing was in Palestine. For men and women, it was normal to wear modest clothing and head scarfs, even for christians and jews. We are in the most westernized Palestine we have ever been in!

That's an interesting quote. However is it just the opinion of one man? In other words, Palestinians today would see themselves as Arabs but wouldn't call themselves Jordanian, Egyptian, Lebanese etc. Due to their unique "situation" they may have developed their own identity now.

The real reason is because the PA has allowed for unlimited immigration for Muslims only into Palestine, Palestine has a higher immigration rate than any recognized country on Earth, and a lot of the incoming people come from countries where females have to wear the hijab starting at age 6 or younger. As more foreign Muslims arrived, threats and actual violence for not conforming to the immigrants' preferences become more and more common. UNRWA schools have been caught requiring the hijab for girls to attend, regardless of the female student's religious affiliation.

They're trying to say a veiled woman may not have views considered "conservative" in the West (a random sample of such views: being in favour of low tax rates, being against abortion, being against large-scale immigration, being against women working outside the home, being in favour of home-schooling one's kids, etc., etc.).
Yeah this was Western influence. Same in Egypt and other Muslim countries. However this was for a short period and before it they covered. The face veil was very common.
